Resident Evil 4 has sold 1.23 million units world wide
« on: June 08, 2005, 12:45:12 PM »
i looked for another thread on this topic, but i couldn't find one, so don't kill me if there is one....

anyways, a lot has been made of the poor sales for RE4, but the numbers dont look that bad...

"- Capcom announced that Biohazard 4 / Resident Evil 4 for GameCube has sold 1.23 million copies worldwide, here are the breakdown:

Japan - 210,000 units
Europe - 360,000 units
North America - 660,000 units"

A thing moderately good is not so good as it ought to be. Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice.

It has been mentioned in another thread
Look for ShyGuy's post

but thats ok, maybe it could use its own thread.

It sucks that Capcom's GC sales sabotage didn't work out so well, well better luck next time.......

just my luck. i guess the question is: how much would a given game need to sell to keep Capcom happy with an exclusive deal? 1.23 mill isnt good enough apparently.

I saw on another forum (GAF i think) where they did a Capcom titles/sales comparison between PS2 & GC

it was kinda ridiculous(going from memory here, as I can't check GAF from work, IP banned for some reason)

PS2 = 40 titles to 13million sales
GC = 4-7 titles to 6million sales

I have no facts behind those #'s, take them as you will

So what was the deal with PGC reporting only half a mil being sold only a couple of days ago? The staff here jumped all over the GCN for that fact as well.

PGC was reporting the NPD Group's numbers which (A) only count North America sales and (B) only count sales through April.

I realized they were only talking about North America's sales figures, but 500,000 vs. 660,000 is quite a difference. Has RE4 sold 160,000 copies since those figures were published? Seems like it has very good legs in terms of sales, if that's the case or the NPD figure was very, very rough.

1.4 million in five months worldwide isn't that great for a game of this calibur. 1.4 million should be the number for the US alone. Think about how good this game was!

not to mention the big support capcom is giving to the psp when it shows clearly that the games dont sell on it and has the smallest userbase, Capcom probably just hates money.

are u sure that's right? 55 titles released in a span of two months. which is 15 more than what they released for the whole previous fiscal year "PlayStation 2 - 40 titles". 55 titles in two months and 40 titles in a whole year. Somethings not right.

Dirk, Thanx for finding the actual number for that.

I was sortof just throwing numbers out there, but I think I got my point across, as demonstrated by the actual numbers.

GC has 1/8 the games and sells more than a 1/4 as many copies.

Logic would have it that you would release more games for GC, as you are selling more copies per Title.  But rarely does Logic and Business Management ever meet (at least in my personal experiece)

It's even worse in Japan.  Japanese in general, and big Japanese companies in particular, are very risk adverse, and loooove a bandwagon.  Once they've got it in their head that a particular thing is "it" -- usually because it gets lots of press and hype -- they'll stick to this notion like glue, regardless of the results, on the assumption that just a little more perseverance will show their assumption to be correct (and a fear of admitting their decision was wrong).

(I work for a large Japanese company, so I constantly see this in painful detail)

Well, the few Capcom games on the Cube were above average to REALLY good. I'm sure there were a lot of average games that were released on PS2 that only made money because the userbase is so large.

if 10 percent of the people who own PS2's buy RE4, that's around 9 million already. To equal the Cube, only 1 percent has to buy the game. I think Capcom is pretty much justified in selling the game on PS2.

Your right they are justified in selling RE4 on the PS2.  But not if there was an agreement otherwise. I dont know how nintendo let them get out of that deal of exclusivity. IM certain Nintendo took a nice payoff for that one, or  maybe there was some renig clause in the contract.
But who cares about all that BS.
This is the kicker. PS2 gets ports of Gamecube games but rarely does the Gamecube get Ports of the Ps2 games. Where is Devil May Cry for the Gamecube. If Campcom is justified in selling Re4 to the Ps2 they are equally justified in porting the 40 games on the PS2 to the Gamecube. Why dont they?? They will sell more wont they??? I dont undrstand the logic nor dont i understand why in the hell they do what they do.

Arggg, my head hurts. How did the 2005-2006 Xbox estimates go higher with one over last years title amount (Xbox - eight titles, 750,000 copies), while the GCN dropped way down with only one less title (GameCube - four titles, 350,000 copies)???

I wonder what the estimates were for 2004-2005. How come we always hear from Capcom that games are under preforming on the GCN yet these numbers show a higher per title number?

By the way who wants to put bets on how well Killer 7 will sale on the GCN compared to the PS2. I'm sure even if the GCN version oversales the PS2 version that Capcom will still call the GCN version sales an underpreformance.

This brings to mind one of my favorite sayings: "Remember, it is not paranoia if they really are out to get you."

Capcom didn't piss off Xbox owners.  Perhaps they're lowering their sales expectations to take into account how they pissed off the entire Cube fanbase by announcing the RE4 port before release.

Of course if they were smart enough to come to that conclusion they wouldn't being doing half of the stupid sh!t they're doing now.

What bugs me is that Capcom is releasing a Midway Arcade Treasures style arcade comp on the Xbox and PS2 but NOT the Cube.  WHY NOT?  It's just a damn arcade collection.  That requires no actual game development so it's not like they would be risking millions of dollars to release it on the Cube.

Perhaps their shareholders hate the GC so much they think it brings in more money if you don't port it to the Cube?

Ian, I don't think that there are a whole lot of people are angry enough at Capcom to stop buying their games. I mean sure I was upset when they revealed the PS2 version of RE4 but I still bought that game, and I am still anxiously waiting for Killer 7.

I am upset that we are not getting the Capcom game collection though. Didn't Mega Man Aniversry Collection do the best on the GCN anyway?
