General Gaming / RE:GI World Exclusive Look at 1st Next Generation Game
« on: September 17, 2004, 04:20:48 PM »
The makers aren't none for great graphics games.  The thing that is appealing about it, is it's open world gameplay.  And the fact that it's a launch title, is significant in terms of graphic quality.  Anyways, it appears next generation graphics should be close to photo realistic eventually in the systems' lifetime.

I enjoyed both Agent Under Fire, and Nightfire.  I wouldn't call them crappy, and they've got decent reviews.  Agent Under Fire was a good game for an early fps gamecube game I used to own, and Nightfire I rented, expected not much at all and enjoyed it alot.

It's rumored that PStwo will be released the same day as GTA:SA on October 26.  I don't know I'm doubtful of PStwo coming out this year, but Sony could pull the surprise.  For one it was a little shocking to see GTA: SA delayed, and only delayed a week.  Another thing is the date, Oct 26.  Wasn't the PS2 released on Oct 26?  It's rumored GTA:SA may even be part of a pack in deal for the PStwo, maybe at $200 or even better.

Not all is lost, Bethesda Softworks, has never published or developed a game for a Nintendo system, from what I know.  I'm working my way up to the article in the mag, (I read every word of print in mags).  I'll post more about it real soon.

Not to mention, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Gran Turismo 4.  And Killzone should sell decent too.  I guess it could help take press, new consumers, and retail store ads showing a brand new PS2 model, a little off Halo 2 madness.  The more eggs the better I guess.

I've read the same thing, "remodeled PSTwo, which is suppossedly 30% smaller and has a built in network adapter @ a price of $149.99." from atleast 1 source if not 2 (different ones).  Another thing I've read is that some industry people are calling for and predicting another round of price cuts for consoles this holidays, but it's unlikely Nintendo will go any lower than their respectable $99 and MS doesn't want to lose more $ per system.  They wonder if PS2 could undercut XB in price.  I could only see this happening if they wanted to try to kill Halo 2, but it's too late for that anyways.  I don't doubt the "pricecut" being an actual new PStwo model to be a strike at the DS launch.

Yes the other companies still have the rights for awhile, as I said, "eventually will acquire."  It's pointless to rant about how bad 989 is because they're working on PS3 sports titles and PSP ones too I believe.  I doubt they would be commissioned to make a Bond game, possibly Rocky but there's not much competition there.  Sony has a slew of 2nd party developers that make great games, so they have nothing to worry about.  Also SCE Studios Santa Monica is making great strides and also expanding it's size, there was a whole article about it in a GI issue this summer.

Alot of Sega GC games were only in development for a year or so.  I was just saying they just did release another exclusive.  I dunno about no more exclusives ever for the GC from them, but it's looking that way for all 3rd party companies so (not including games that have been in development for awhile already), perhaps it's true.

Now that I think of it probably, my memory isn't what it used to be, I remember something of the sort.  And I was also away for a month this summer.  Anyways, I got so excited, I guess again lol, sorry.

I don't think they would release a multiplayer only Metroid Prime Hunters, especially on a portable system.  I think that multiplayer was shown at E3 for it because it was easier to make in such a short development time than it would be to write out the story, plot, etc.  There just wasn't enough time to flesh all that out.

As for release date, I'm betting now that the system will come out right before Thanksgiving, they're just rushing to get enough produced and launch titles done.

As for launch titles, I don't know about Mario Kart, because what was shown at E3 looked identical to the tech demo Mario Kart shown for the N64 at E3 way back.  Or that could be a good thing, but that possibility is less likely, still there though.

Here our games I think could possibly be launch titles or released before 2005:
Atari Classics
Bomberman
Frogger 2005
Pac-Pix
Pictochat (possibly free)
Snowboard Kids
Super Mario 64x4
Urbz: SiC (very likely)
Warioware Inc
Assortment of small games together as 1 including: (balloon trip, carving, Nintendogs, Submarine, Table Hockey) or possibly 1 of these games could be full fledged and a stand alone game.
Castlevania
Mr. Driller
Rayman
Sonic DS
Ultimate games (1 of them)
Viewtiful Joe

I think maybe 4-8 games at launch or close after, and of the titles I listed I'm just saying it's possible, but not likely for some of them, still possible though.

Above all I think Nintendo will have a launch title that is a surprise, and possibly a 2nd surprise title before 2005 or just after.

My dream would be for an Earthbound title, even if it's released years later.  Actually the gba Earthbound 1+2 title has completely fallen off the radar, and Mother 3 has as well, could they have decided to release one of these on the DS with special DS features?  Even if the graphics were still gba quality it wouldn't matter.

EDIT: I won't be surprised to see Majesco's new cartoon releases on the DS eventually, I think they already said they're interested in doing it.  Who knows when they will get the programming done to make them, months or a year.

Another great thing in the new issue of GI (sorry if I sound like I work for them [other posts]).  Anyhooo.  Gamers in Japan who bought FF 1+2 for gba were given a special questionnaire!  SquareEnix asked them... what game they would most like to see on the DS.  FF 4, 5, 6, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Front Mission, Saga series, and others were listed as choices.  hehehe.  This is great.  I wonder what Japan gamers will choose...  (they're choosing for the world... lol).  Lucky Japanimes.

Unless you want your craft to look like a prism two profiles aren't going to cut it. Try drawing out some profiles and see what kinds of designs you can get, it's very restrictive.

So you wouldn't be able to make hovercrafts that look as good as the ones made by the people who created the game...  Big Deal, you can't do that with track editors either.  Also if they had a dampener/increaser type thing, you could put the stylus on a section of the craft and have it dampen into the craft or pull it out to make some cool designs and give the craft more flow/aerodynamics.

Deguello: There was 1 main game of F-zero for the SNES, F-zero "2" was just a special edition of the first game with more tracks.  Also the N64 would have 2 F-Zero's by your logic.  There was F-zero X, and F-zero Expansion Kit for the 64dd (not a separate system, requires the N64 [for argument reasons]).  And the GC has 1 F-zero.  So when it comes down to it, SNES, N64, and GC have really only had 1 Main F-zero game.  The other titles were "special editions" (F-zero 2 snes, with some new tracks) and F-zero X EK (same idea).  Having 3 separate Main F-zero games is quite a bit for 1 system, especially having 2 announced to be released at the same time.

EDIT: Also the 2 "additions" for the SNES and N64 games were only released in Japan.

Unfortunately companies don't know about the loyalty from a single person.  As far as racing games for the Cube from now until the end of the year, there is:

Room Zoom- Nov 15
Need for Speed UG 2- Nov 17
GT Cube- Dec 31

NFS UG 2 is looking very good, a huge stepup from NFSUG 1 as far as cars, customization, and especially race modes.  Probably the only reason I'll buy it (in addition to GT4, Burnout 3, Choro Q, and possibly Flatout) is because of the new race modes for NFSUG 2.

EDIT: I forgot ATV Offroad Fury 3, which is looking like a huge sleeper hit of the year.

Some games already feature console vs console, and console vs pc.  Hopefully the trend continues, with more online titles playable across all consoles.

Drawing your own craft sounds nice on paper, but in reality the results will look mostly unusable. Besides, we're talking about thousands of polies per vehicle, the DS can't handle that (at least not with thirty of them onscreen and a decent framerate).

Teddy system?  Which game was that, Magic Pengel or Amazing Island, they both are sort of similar.  Theres been more than those games though.  And MP2 just came out in Japan.  They wouldn't have to make the drawing very complex.  They could have you draw a side profile, and a back profile view of your hovercraft.  (just 1 line for the side, and 1 line for the back that meets up with itself).  Then you could either draw small accessories for the vehicles, or probably better, pick different exhausts, wings, etc to attach to your existing profile views.  You could then choose the color, and have different colored maps for parts.  They could even break it down to templates, that you select with the stylus, if they made it very simple.  I dunno if they'll go with 30 racers on the DS either, maybe.

an older GI preview, or possibly some other source, I forget, but they also had an issue with the slowdown.  They seemed confident that Treasure could polish it up by the time of the release.  Hmm.  Wonder what happened.

General Gaming / RE:Doom 3
« on: September 14, 2004, 09:35:35 PM »
I don't think Doom 3 is the best game, I just think ID did everything they could to make it the best single player fps they could.  Some people say Farcry is better than Doom 3.  As far as what notable fps I think of lately, well I haven't played alot lately, and easily enjoy most though.  I liked Red Faction way back and RF 2.  TS2 was great, wish the story single player mode was better unfortunately I never got to play it alot in the multi modes, loved the arcade modes though.  I enjoyed Night Fire alot more than I thought it would, especially more than my opinion of the game before I rented it.  I look forward to Killzone, Geist, TS3, GERA, and I forget the rest.  Doom 64 was actually a blast, I played it two weeks ago to the end.  I've never played Halo, would like to try it atleast.  One game I like better than them all, even GE and PD, is Quake 3 Arena.  It's only Quake I've played, just picked up Quake 64, but Q3A has some excellent levels, cool mods, and is just plain fun.

Ocarina: I had never played a 'PC' RTS before, but I picked up Warcraft 2 for the PS1 and enjoyed it alot, my friend then told me about Starcraft and I got it for PC and loved it (still one of my all time favs) but I didn't have access to high speed internet except a few months per year, until last year full access.  I've been playing the game on and off for years now, like 4+, and I started making maps (ums) like Turret Defense sSs, a Pacman VS map (just like shiggys), etc.  I stopped playing it in July, and been on my consoles lately, but I'm sure I'll go back to it eventually... a definite classic for life.  I always wanted to try out SC 64 anyways, and almost bought it last year.

MalificentOgre: My experience with Ogre Battle is limited, I saw a preview of Tactics Ogre for the SNES way back and so wanted it, but it never came out here, then I wanted to atleast try out OB 1 SNES, OB PS1, TO remake PS1, and I finally got my first Ogre Battle series game, Tactics Ogre for gba years ago (it rules), anyways I never really pondered on OB 64 I don't think (I forget) but I heard about it more and more years after it's released, so far I love the music (same theme as in TO KoL gba) and the graphics are sweet sprite blissness.
How would you rank each of your OB games?  Oh yea, I had JFG back years ago, found it for $20 and I liked it, it grows on you, I never finished it though, sold it for more games at the time.  Wanna get it again.

Draygaia: that is true about pc games, good thing they don't have to pay licensing fees.

Is Sega including a "fighting mode" in their All Stars game release that is played with the eyetoy, it's coming out early next year i think, if not this year.  I thought I remembered their being a Virtua Fighter type eyetoy game, a bit like what you described for Tekken.  If it was back in 2001 it either was a Namco thing, or just like one of the many other setups they have like that, if it was eyetoy it could've only been prototype back in E3 2001.

« on: September 14, 2004, 06:51:57 PM »
Ah I do remember that was supposed to be in Perfect Dark, hehe.  I was so mad when it wasn't included.  I was gonna ask if THPS games did it, something in my head reminded me of that game, I thought maybe it was gonna be in the new one, but I see now it was the last one.  Anyways, the eyetoy is better than the gb camera for doing it, too bad it never happened with PD, then we probably would've seen it happen first on Nintendo of the quality it is at now with eyetoy doing it.  Oh well.  =(

That's a good idea P666.  Does anyone have any more ideas for implementation directly for games?  I'm sure if they could do the sensors better (the ones you could put on your body) than more innovative things could be done.  By the way what ever happened with that hoverboard type game that played using the Eyetoy, was that released yet?  I wonder how it plays.
