"PSP Lite"

The Source

Sounds dubious to me... most people are inclined to believe any rumor that involves Sony being a shameless copycat.

Adding "4 Gigs" (which I'm guessing means 512 MB) of storage and a camera. So now besides being an overpriced, subpar portable media player it'll be an overpriced, subpar digital camera.

I guess this was the more logical path for Sony than, say, having some worthwhile games developed for it.

I don't understand why they don't just redesign the console to have a touch screen, microphone and clamshell design.

Seriously, Sony has added features to their consoles mid-lifespan in the past, like a better processor and 480p support, screwing the people who already own the console.

I don't see what would be stopping them from doing it here where a redesign to compete would actually be warranted.

Didn't the PSP just come out?  I don't see why Sony would be stupid enough to already release another version.

All the DSL is doing is brightening the screen and making a few aesthetic adjustments. Can't say the same about this..

actually it might just be an aesthetic adjustment and a bundled in camera attachment... the 512 MB might not be accessible in games and might just be for the sake of storing photos. Or it might just duplicate the function of the memory stick.

Giving Sony the benefit of the doubt, they're just trying to tantalize gadget buyers the only way they can... more features. One assumes if they were capable of getting good games on the system, they would've done so already. It's never going to compete with the DS on the basis of software, so they're trying to make it the swiss army knife of portables. It's a video player, it's a digital camera, it can theoretically play some video games. The problem of course is that multifunction systems usually don't do a particularly good job at anything. The question is, if you didn't want a PSP in the first place, will adding a camera change your mind?

Does it take video?

In that case, the "Porn Station Portable" just took one step closer to reality. Though, people are already using it for that, from what I hear.

Most of Sony's entry model cameras take video, so I'm assuming it probably would.

Both, actually, including an SNES portable.

Looks like they are doing that for the current system.

- Sony announced a US price drop of PSP to $199 on March 22, the new package will only include the PSP, AC adaptor and battery. Currently 15 million units of PSP were shipped worldwide, the PSP generated US$1.6 billion in 2005, more than both Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS combined.

I wonder how much of that $1.6 billion is actually profit.  I'm guessing none and it's all loss.  I'd like to see their profit margins compared to the DS.  Actually, I bet they're less than when you combine the DS's profit and the 360's losses.

Sony loves to mince words and put spin on a situation, like saying they've "shipped" 15 million worldwide instead of revealing how many they've actually sold.

The $1.6 billion sounds suspect. What does "generated" mean? "Generated" $1.6 billion in losses? It sure as hell wasn't software sales.

Joke Answer: It's the revenue lost to piracy of all the garbage that people play on their PSPs since there aren't real games for it

Seriously though: Uhh... maybe "generated" is the gross revenue from the theoretical retail sale price of all the hardware + games + UMD discs shipped in 2005?

Plus they probably take a guess as to how many of the memory sticks sold worldwide are eventually going to be used in the PSP.

Incidentally, anyone know how the UMD sales are structured? Does the retailers buy them from the warehouse outright? That is to say, if they aren't able to sell them, can they return them to Sony or whoever? Or are they stuck tossing them on the clearance pile like you see with some of those earlier Majesco GBA videos?

Clearance pile.

Sony wouldn't take back broken PSPs in the first few rounds of shipments. Don't see why they'd take back UMDs that didn't sell.

Don't see why they'd take back UMDs that didn't sell.

Because retailers might decide that stocking dozens of UMD movies is too big of a risk?
