I watched a couple of films today, both of which I thought were pretty "meh", Red Dawn and Tron Legacy.  I watched the former because the upcoming "Homefront" game intrigued me to see the previous movie that that writer had done.  Overall, it's a pretty long and dull 80s movie, with effects that border on the laughable; characters I really didn't care about; and a plot that just seemed to take forever to not really go anywhere.

Show some respect, sir; you speak of the Most Violent Film of all time, with an act of violence occurring every 2.23 minutes!

But seriously, it sucked.

WOLVERINES!

I mean.. *ahem*

EasyCure, do you have the DVD of Roger Rabbit? It has a ton of bonus features.

I did, from netflix. I've since returned it without watching the special features because I plan on purchasing the movie now.

Newest rating:

Drive Angry: 7/10

..and that's that I watched it of altered mind! I went in expecting it to be cheesy as all hell and thats exactly what I got. Nick's performance didn't have anything as laughably bad as the Wickerman, which honestly.. made me a little sad. My only regret with this movie is I paid full price for it (x4...ugh) because another movie won out for my usual $6 Tuesday Movie Night, and I didn't want to wait until tomorrow because it only had 2 showings all of Saturday, so I didn't want to miss it.

Next review: Take Me Home Tonight

What about Rambo 4? I think the ROD (Rate of Death) is something like every 5 seconds.

EDIT:

The Next Three Days  8/10

Honestly, much better than I was expecting. I love movies were the innocent have no other options but to do something daring and illegal because of the circumstance. I also like when people out smart cops. This had both in spades. See it if you get the chance. It starts out a bit slow but really ramps of the intensity half way into the film.

Nah, you guys are thinking of the quality of violence rather than the quantity, which is how Guiness measured "most violent." Shoot, Red Dawn is PG-13.

Date Movie: 7/10
Pretty stupid, but very funny. I thought Steve Carrell and Tina Fey were great together, especially their "what's the story" imitations of other couples at dinner.

Youth in Revolt:  8.8/10

At first I was very disappointed that Michael Cera was playing the same character AGAIN, but things really pick up when his alter ego enters the picture. The alter ego is deliberate, dangerous, and funny, not dry face typical Michael Cera, but in your face provocative funny. The girl he is going after is somewhat of a bitch, but a very interesting bitch, and there is a lot about this movie that keeps you guessing.

I just finished watching my new Blu-Ray of...

Summer Wars - I'm a big fan of this director's previous movie, The Girl Who Leaped Through Time (if you haven't seen that lovely little movie, check it out!), so I picked up the Blu-Ray of this one today.  I just finished it and...overall, I'm pretty conflicted about how I'd rate this movie.  I liked it, but man this movie has problems.  It's biggest problem is that it doesn't know what kind of movie it wants to be, as it's 3 movies in one: a story about some kids' first teenage romance, a story about the importance of family, and a story about a world run by an evolved version of World of WarCraft that's suddenly under attack from a rampaging virus.  One of these 3 does not belong.  Can YOU figure out which that is?  Yeah, I thought you could, and it's a major distraction in a movie that didn't need a fantastical element.  It doesn't  help that this aspect of the story ends on a total Deus Ex Machina that feels cheesy and not very satisfying.  The main character of the story also doesn't really get to do much until the end of the film, making me wonder for most of the film why he needed to exist.  The main female lead also seems to disappear halfway through the movie, not emerging until the very end when it comes time for her to actually do something in the cyber-punk storyline.

When the movie isn't playing with being a surprisingly-not-pretentious cyber-punk story about mankind's growing dependency on the internet, it's a pretty good movie and reminds me a lot of Girl Who Leaped Through Time.  A large focus of the movie is on this ridiculously large family coming together to celebrate their great-grandmother's birthday, and the movie does a phenomenal job of characterizing the family.  If you've ever attended a massive family reunion (as I have), the family depicted here will see all too familiar.  The animation is fantastic (even if it bears that "flat" look common in Japanese feature films due to their relatively low budget), but I really do expect nothing less from Studio Madhouse (though this is more cartoony than most of Madhouse's usual work).  As for the English dub, it's well-done (especially considering the huge cast probably had Funimation scrounging through every studio they could find to get voices to fill the roles).  I enjoyed my time with this surprisingly-long film (nearly 2 hours), but the director should have picked either the family story or the cyber-punk story and stuck with it rather than try to cram several different movies together.

lol decent probably stretches from 6-8 for me. Decency used to be considered a good thing. Its like when someone asks you how you are and you say "im fine" to which they reply "whats bothering you?"

but to answer BNM question

10 is awesome
9 is great
8 could be decent or good
7 is mediocre
6 is passable
5 is failing
4 I want my money back even if i downladed it
3 I will vow to humiliate the director in his lifetime, but never actual do it
2 I will do it
1 I hope i never see a 1, even pornos get a default 2

Oxford Dictionary:

mediocre |ˌmēdēˈōkər|
adjective
of only moderate quality; not very good : a mediocre actor.

The real problem is that ThePerm has skewered his scale to the point where 7 is his passing grade, not 5. This problem permeates a lot of reviews, but is especially bad with videogames leading to a lot of inflated scores and lack of critical examination of flaws. The game Oblivion was praised as GOTY even though contained numerous serious flaws that would have killed any other game without it's hype.

I think it's because a lot of people look at them like the grade on their paper. Teachers and schools have slightly variant scales but they all are pretty close to this:

90-100: A
80-89:B
70-79:C
60-69:D
Below 60: Failing

Our review standards seem to reflect this on average. 'A' is mega hit must-see, B is great, C is OK for most but if you are a fan of the art/style/genre you will appreciate if despite some flaws, D means poor overall but with one or two redeeming qualities; less than that and you hit parody/mockery territory. At the lower levels they all tend to blend together. Bad is bad in most people's books.

Lol, yeah I did mean Date Night.

While I personally think that 8/10 is better than decent, the fact that he explained that it means decent for him should settle all arguments. Numbers are arbitrary, sentiment is everything, at least in the case of rating movies.

well BNM was asking me how 8/10 could be decent. IDK, i tend to rely more on a qualitative scale then the quantitative one. Most movies wouldn't go below a 5 anyhow...below 5 then they are just an abysmal mess. I don't remember how I rated Troll 2, but its in the 5 territory. I wouldn't go as far as to say its that bad. There was this clown doll horror movie I got in the bargain bin at wal-mart thats is well in the 3 territory, luckily it was part of a 4 pack and the other 3 movies weren't so bad. Yes they were campy, but not a piece of **** like that terd.

I thought there wasn't enough of his alter ego, and while I don't remember what score I gave it (assuming I posted my two cents about it) I would probably rate it lower than this. Not much, but definitely lower..

Decent is a 6/10 in my book.

Same here, which is why I'm sad to say it but..

Take Me Home Tonight: 5/10

Wasn't a LOL comedy like I thought/hoped it would be, but did have its funny moments. I actually like Topher Grace and the usual wise-ass character he portrays, but he wasn't it in this film so it was kind of disappointing. He was still a loveable-loser-type but it wasn't the same. I didn't feel like any of the characters were stand-out, which is sad because while Topher's character was relatable, it was in a pretty generic way.

Very few laughs and a pretty cookie cutter story of boy gets girl just left a sour taste in my mouth, not enough to hate on the movie because it was enjoyable, but not enough to think it above average as a movie.
