What exactly is shovelware?

I've always thought that shovelware was a (usually poor) port of a game from another platform, possibly originally released a while before it was ported. Therefore I've always thought it weird when a Wii-exclusive like Carnival Games is dubbed as shovelware; it's unique to Wii and despite its review scores it delivers what it promises.

This logic would also suggest that a shovelware game isn't inherently bad. I've enjoyed some ports of older games on Wii, such as Mercury Meltdown Revolution and ThrilleVille: Off The Rails. Am I... a part of the problem? :o

I thought the game is confirmed to have mini games, so perhaps theres a soccer mode... like the one Excitebike 64 had which was a fucking blast to play! i seriously hate this generation becuase mini-games have such a bad stigma behind them. Am i the only one who thought the mini-games in that one were kick ass? I loved playing a friend in soccer, and loved the challenge of the mounting climbing one, it was so much fun!
I'd just like to give a "hecks yeah!" to this. ExciteBike 64 is awesome, it's not only the best bike racer but also one of the best racing games ever conceived. My sister and I loved to play the Hill Climb level backwards, it was fun to see who could make it down first... and who could cause the most excellent crash at the end!

If this ExciteBots game is going to take pages from ExciteBike 64 (which I hope it does) then I also hope to see a track editor this time around.

Who hates minigames? Sometimes the minigames grab me more than the main game; I've probably spent more time playing the minigames of Mario Super Sluggers than I have the actual baseball games.

Anyways, i find it highly offensive that people are banned for a service for being who they are.
While I agree that it is despicable to ban people from a service just for that, I can't help but wonder what this person's motivation was for stating that she's gay. This is a gaming service, what does it matter what your sexual orientation is? There are plenty of other non-controversial ways to find gamers with similar tastes, so there's no need to be listing oneself as a lesbian. Because of this, it makes me believe she did it just to make a statement; whenever you do that, you're asking for trouble.

I missed the first Wi-Fi night involving Mario Kart which is why I'd vote for it this time around.
Plus, I don't like SSBBrawl so you don't have to worry about another vote for that every month.
I'd definitely join in on a Bomberman Blast party, it's an enjoyable game and it supports eight players so lots of people can join in.

I wonder if it'd be too frequent to have a designated W-Fi night every week. There could be a night for SSBBrawl, a night for Mario Kart Wii, and the remaining two nights could be any obscure game which strikes the mood of the participants. I don't know if titles like BWii and Mario Strikers Charged will ever win in a monthly event.

I wouldn't mind the blue shell as much if it worked more like it first did in Mario Kart 64.
I agree on that, MK64 had the best blue shell. Since it was indestructible you could also hold it behind you and block an unlimited number of shells.
One nice thing about the blue shell is that only one can appear at a time. If you get one when you're close to the front of the pack, try to get into first without using it. It will be your insurance that no blue shells shall appear, and you can use it if somebody passes you near the end. Just be sure not to accidentally use it when you're in first.. unless you're wondering what it would be like to self-destruct.

edit: on topic, I still am searching for this game. Haven't seen it in a store in months. :(
I see some all of the time at Best Buy. Try checking their website to see if they have any in stock, and you can even use the in-store pickup feature to see if stores near you have any copies.

It's not about saving time, dude, it's about showing familiarity.
I'm sure that would make sense to most people but it isn't something which I understand. I know it's been going on forever and pretty much everybody has a nickname, but it just seems weird that someone can shorten somebody's name just because they've met before.

Besides, if one were to be familiar with me then they'd likely know I don't like having my name shortened. Though I suppose I shouldn't care what anyone calls me, so long as it isn't something along the lines of "you twat!"

I'm going to start calling you Mop it up.
You wouldn't be the first. I'd guess that Mop it up is pronounced as "mee-yoo".

What if somebody reports a post which was made before the rule change? Is that still going to be moderated under the new rules?

Now that Ogre Battle is on the VC, I hope this means that prices on the original SNES cartridge will come down.

Way down.

Well, since others have nominated Mario Kart Wii, Bomberman Blast, and Battalion Wars II, then I'm going to toss out Mario Strikers Charged as my nomination.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Camelot making RPG for Rev?
« on: March 02, 2009, 03:03:51 AM »
I don't think Camelot had any involvement with the re-release of Mario Power Tennis. I believe that's why the game doesn't have any new content other than the obvious (Wii controls and widescreen).

What everyone is waiting for probably isn't what I've been hoping for as I found Golden Sun to be boring. Unless this mysterious Wii RPG is an RPG/Mario Tennis hybrid similar to the Mario Tennis game on the Game Boy Color, then colour me uninterested.

Oh, so you can't compose music with it? Oh well, it still looks fun so I might have to buy it anyway.

Thank you for the info.

« on: March 02, 2009, 02:43:46 AM »
I just wanted to know which words were blocked because I won't be able to see which words will have been starred out/changed in my posts. However, if all of the "non-offensive" words have been removed then I doubt I'll be using anything that's blocked by the word filter.

If a word is said by someone else that makes you uncomfortable, and it is not filtered out when you have the filter turned on, send me a PM and I can add it.
The word "maxi" makes me uncomfortable, but I suppose it's too late to block that... :-\

I got rid of all the silliness when I took "gay" out of the filter.
That's good to know, now I don't have to worry about it.

I'd still like a list of all of the blocked words though. If that isn't possible, then I'll just assume every word that's banned on GameFAQs isn't acceptable here.

I've never used "Jap" before because I don't like to shorten names or words; to me that seems like lazy writing. I didn't know it was racist though, so maybe I'll keep that in mind.

If you learn to type fast then you shouldn't be bothered by typing out an entire word as opposed to an abbreviation. How much time is it going to save to leave out five letters? A small fraction of a second. Besides, a reader will have better comprehension if a writing piece has proper spelling and grammar.

TalkBack / Re: Virtual Console Recommendations: Virtual Commodore 64
« on: March 01, 2009, 04:39:10 PM »
Regarding value, how much would it cost to track down an actual Commodore 64 system (computer?) and buy the original hard copies of these games? I think that should probably be considered when deciding the values of these games; if they're hard to find and cost more than the asking price on the VC, maybe they'd be more worth it to some.

17617
It's the free-form music composition which interests me. I have the MTV Music Generator for the PlayStation, which is a very technical tool and the actual creation of music is boring, it's the end result that's enjoyable. With Wii Music it looks like the actual composition is fun; are you sure this isn't a game?

However, this free-form composition probably means that it isn't as intricate as the MTV Music Generator, so I wonder if I could still compose the music I wanted. I haven't watched any videos of this game yet, so maybe I should start there.

I don't like renting games because I can't stand paying for something that I'm not going to own (one reason why I can't buy download games). It was already my intention to buy it used for cheap, although it could be a while before it goes down in price...

17618
I'm really interested in this game, but I don't think anyone that I know would be into it. Is this game still worth it if you'll be playing mostly by yourself?

It is the snowball effect, as we lose more counterbalances like Bill, then it starts shifting to one side and becomes more pronounced. Ian is no different today then he ever was, but since there aren't as many people to buffer his comments they become more striking.
Maybe, but if you leave then the ratio is going to get worse. Do you really want to do that to us? :'(

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Is Nintendo losing touch with its roots?
« on: February 28, 2009, 08:45:17 PM »
I don't think Nintendo is returning to its roots so much as they are starting over. They tried to evolve along with the fans but look where it lead them: a diminishing market share with each new home console. Now they're starting fresh, with a new concept (Wii), a new market, and some new games to go with it, as well as tailoring their existing franchises to attract some of the different audience they're targeting. Looking at some of the titles Nintendo published on the Nintendo 64, they would be very different games if the Nintendo of today had designed then for Wii. Better? Worse? That is what I can't decide.

I don't really understand why people like to shorten names. How much time does that really save? If I wanted to be called "Mop" then I would have made that my username! :P

In local multiplayer, you can't individually choose which items appear, which would have been nice. The item setting lets you choose between Balanced, Powerful, Strategic, or None. If you choose Strategic then you'll most often see Green Shells, Red Shells, and Bananas.

Another option that people often miss is that you can turn off the CPU players in the Battle Mode (though not in 1P battle of course).

I have Mario Kart Wii & I have to say getting shot up by multiple items in that home stretch does get frustrating. To me intentionally hanging back in the pack then waiting for the better items on the final lap to breeze into the lead shouldn't be a viable way to race.
I think there are only a few tracks which are like that. Tracks like Luigi Circuit are just too short 'n easy, which causes everyone to be all jumbled together at pretty much all times and results in a war zone. You often don't want to be in first on the final lap because the entire pack is in your rearview and who knows how many of them are packing a Starman, Bullet Bill, or Golden Mushroom. The absolute worst track would have to be DS Yoshi Fails, as it's incredibly short, wide, and has various boost pads that pretty much ensure everyone stays together.

Still, that's one thing I like about the game. The races are like snowflakes, no two are ever the same.

I suppose this "epic" game stuff applies only to single-player games, which inherently seem like a bad value to me since they often times have little replay value.

What would something like Mario Kart Wii qualify as? The single-player mode takes about 10 hours to complete 100%, although that includes playing the same tracks repeatedly; it takes only 2 hours to play every track once. But then, there is the multiplayer mode, both local and online, which is probably something that most people are going to be spending the majority of their time with. There's no real way to measure how much play time one could potentially get out of that before they become bored.

After I completed Super Mario Galaxy to 100%, I've not once touched the game since. Not a week has gone by since purchasing Mario Kart Wii in May that I haven't played it at least one day out of the week (though often times more). Which game is more epic?

You're the first person who has ever called me Mop It. That feels... somehow wrong.

I wonder if you're okay with Brawl's randomness because you own that game and are therefore skilled at it. Perhaps you'll get more comfortable with Mario Kart Wii after you buy it and get in some real practice.

Iwata revealed that the idea for the cameras began early on, when a coworker mentioned how the DS already had ears (the microphone) and a sense of touch (the touch pad). The only thing lacking was for the DS to have eyes.
Smell-O-Vision for DS v.4 confirmed.
Nah, I think they're going to work on the sense of taste before moving to that. Imagine if the lime green DS actually tasted like lime...
