Nintendo Gaming / Re: Nintendo Switch Lite and Future Revisions
« on: July 06, 2021, 03:12:24 PM »
Since it's functionally the same as the current regular Switch, I think it should replace it eventually, to help lessen possible confusion by having too many models. But, only if they bring it back down to $300 when it comes time to replace it.

If I understand this correctly, it's still the same exact hardware?

I’m approaching 15 years so I will be taking my leave soon.
If you quit I quit!

The original Mario + Rabbids is still one of my fave Switch games, so I'm thrilled to see a sequel. What I said back with the first game probably still applies here: "This game looks way better than it has any right to be."

I like this changeup, though I hope it doesn't cause the microgames to feel more homogeneous. I'll still probably enjoy it regardless, these games are always a wacky good time.

TalkBack / Re: Metroid Dread Announced, Launching October 8

For some reason, I never knew (or didn't remember) that Metroid Dread was ever anything more than just name, and never had anything shown off or detailed. At one point I even started to think it was never anything more than a meme made up by fans. So I guess that would make this a meme come true!

I still have all the games, so I'm not sure if there's anything here for me, but we'll see how it turns out.

Hm, tempting. It's been a while since I've played some of these, but I'm already swamped for games, not sure I have time to replay stuff too...

I wonder if these will be straight up 1:1 or if there will be some changes and additions.

I'm not sure I ever knew was this was, and feel like I still don't.

I like that they seem to be trying something a little different here, I'll probably have to check this out at some point.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: The 3DS 10th Anniversary Thread

Nothing but crickets in here? Does no one like the 3DS? :(

What a great little system that thing is. Despite its rocky start, it ended up becoming one of Nintendo's best systems, I feel. There's a lot of games on it I enjoyed, and I also didn't have a DS so it opened up a lot for me. As ubiquitous as is the Switch, I kind of miss some of the special features that came from the 3DS being a dedicated handheld.

I still have some more games to play on it, but, if I were forced to choose today, my top ten would probably look something like this:

1. Luigi's Mansion 2
2. The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes
3. Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon
4. Fantasy Life
5. Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan
6. Fire Emblem Awakening
7. Puzzle & Dragons Z / Super Mario Bros. Edition
8. Monster Hunter Stories
9. Super Mario 3D Land
10. Metroid Prime Federation Force

I've never played a Pac-Man game before, so this probably wouldn't be a good starting point.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch/Wii U)

I will have a read through this thread to see any tips or anything like that in the coming days.
Since a large aspect of the game is exploration and discovery, my suggestion would be to play most of the game before reading this thread. I think it'd be more fun to experience things first within the game than to first read about them here.

I've never played a one! Um, is that a bannable offense around here...?

I've had that happen a few times, I don't think it's anything serious. As far as I can figure, it's caused by a loose connection from the system to the cartridge, so unfortunately the only way to fix it is to turn off the power, take out the cartridge, and re-insert it. Usually once the audio begins to mess up, the game will freeze the next time it loads a new screen / area.

When cleaning, be sure to also clean the system's cartridge connector too. I'd recommend a microfiber cloth for that, as something like tissue paper can get snagged and leave behind residue.

Sheesh! When did I become the dunce of Safe Words?!

Did you choose this one because no one had picked it yet?

Podcast Discussion / Re: RetroActive 49: Resident Evil: Revelaitons

This is the only Resident Evil game that I've played. I have it for Wii U and 3DS, so if anyone's interested in trying out the online co-op, let me know.

Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence because I do indeed enjoy silence, quiet down in here with all this noise! Just a buncha noise!

I heard the loser has to post a recording of themselves performing the DK Rap :o .
Yikes, I didn't realize there were such high stakes!

Hee hee yeah, my initial gut reaction was pretty bad, I usually try to wait until things settle down first. I'm pretty sure I stated that the Wii U would be another runaway success, which was based mostly on pre-orders selling out. Whoops! Admittedly I'm kind of baffled the Switch has sold as well as it has, but I won't get into that.

Third-party and indie stuff has increased sure, but it's still the same types of support Nintendo's been getting. This is straying from the original point anyway, that the context of my original comment in its conversation is still mostly true as Nintendo doesn't have third-party support the way they used to 20+ years ago. Taking that out of context seems to have caused some confusion, but I suspect that was your goal!  :o

Square has supported other successful Nintendo systems with older FF titles like GBA and DS, so I actually wasn't that surprised they supported the successful Switch as well, especially with Sony systems out of the equation. I'm honestly kind of surprised that Activision hasn't tried a Call of Duty game on the Switch, as the Wii got most of them, and even the Wii U and DS got some. Ubisoft seems scared to try some of their "big" games that they tried on Wii U as well, such as Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs, though I think they may have done a "cloud version" or something of an Assassin's Creed game?

Personally I haven't played and didn't own most of the games Switch gets so I've been pretty happy with it overall.

Oh whoops I almost missed this!
May I ask how you almost missed this?
Mainly I just don't spend as much time on NWR / the Internet anymore. I think I may have seen the signups a while ago, but got distracted by the Direct stuff and forgot to go back for a while.

When people mentioned third-party support, I think the context was the big companies, not indies. These days there are a lot of blurred lines between "third-party" and "indie" so it can sometimes be tough to figure out these generalities. It seemed like the Wii U and 3DS still got a lot of indie stuff so that remains a constant. 3DS and DS still had a fair amount of Japanese support.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Buying New Panels For Upgraded Switch?
« on: March 04, 2021, 12:51:06 PM »
This would track with the new Pokémon remakes releasing late this year(probably November also), so it makes total sense.

Do OLED screens still have trouble with screen burn-in, longevity? Those used to be the main knocks against them.
There have been many strides towards reducing the issue on both a hardware and software level, but it does still exist. If this new Switch included similar prevention methods as the TVs do, then it should be largely fine, especially since the current Switch already does things like dim the screen after a few minutes of inactivity and enters sleep mode from idling. May still not want to play NES games on it, though.
