The other exclusive was Arms for the Switch. What’s especially impressive here is that it sold that well without including any digital sales. Nintendo separately confirmed that its wacky fighter surpassed 256,000 copies sold physically and digitally in June. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe and Zelda: Breath of the Wild sold 180,000 and 145,000 during that same period, respectively.

This shows that Nintendo fans are still buying a ton of software for their newly acquired Switch devices.

“Arms for the Nintendo Switch debuts at No. 5 in the best-seller charts for the month, giving the publisher, Nintendo, three of the month’s top 10 best sellers,” said Piscatella.

Holy ****! 98,999 that's pretty incredible. Hopefully 3rd parties start bringing their A-game, Nintendo already has 4 million+ sellers on their hands.

Hardware sales totals:
    Switch: 1.97m in the quarter, 4.7m since launch.
    3DS: 950k in the quarter, 67m to date
    No changes in hardware projections from Nintendo.

Software sales totals:
    Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 3.54m copies
    The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: 1.16m copies just of the Switch version, 3.92m Switch copies sold to date
    ARMS: 1.16m copies
    Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia: "Strong sales" but under 1m worldwide

Overall, it's been a strong year for Nintendo, and I think the arrival of Mario Odyssey will keep it going through the end of the year.

I wonder how much Switch would be selling without supply issues. With those crazy lottery lines in Japan I imagine it will be selling strongly for some time.

What are people expecting? Completely surpassing Wii U's numbers by the end of the first year?


Oh yeah one other thing about these sales that I have to give credit to Nintendo for. How many times since the launch of the Gamecube did we hear about Nintendo making sure there would be no droughts? Then every single time the system would launch and we would go months with barely anything noteworthy.


With Switch I feel like they've totally come through with this 1 major release a month thing. I know some people aren't feeling the enhanced ports like Pokken or Mario Kart Deluxe but boy those things filling in the gaps are so wonderful for me and looks to be pretty wonderful as a whole. I have no idea how long they can keep this up especially when they run out of ports but I suppose if 3rd parties finally jump in that could help.

Filling release gaps with ports is something the Switch can get away with largely because the Wii U was so unsuccessful that hardly anyone played those games when they were new.  It's an unintentional benefit of following up a flop with a hit.  It also benefits from the fact that games today have less of a visual difference between generations - the PS4 and XB1 fill their release schedule with "remasters" all the time too.  If the Gamecube tried to fill gaps with N64 ports it would have been laughed at - the games would have looked ridiculously out-of-date without a major overhaul.

Well Monster Hunter is out this week so I'd imagine they were holding back quite a few units for that games launch.  But yeah they've probably blown through the majority of their Q2 stock in Japan so after Monster Hunter, the system will be back into the 20-30k range each week until it gets another bump for Fire Emblem Warriors.

I sure hope Capcom doesn't consider this a failed test, as MHXX is a late port of a rehash of a greatest-hits rehash. Even Japan has its limits on those, so they shouldn't have expected too much of it. Plus, MHWorld isn't that far off, either.

Looks like Nintendo is doing a much better job of stocking Switches in stock in Japan.  I was worried sales would drop to the 20k range again after Monster Hunter week, but they still got around 50k the week after.  Now they might get to that range this week and next, but with Pokken and Fire Emblem Warriors coming out later this month, I imagine Nintendo should have another big shipment for those games releases as well.  Then of course in October I'd imagine they'll have a massive shipment for Mario.

Hopefully they been able to get a sizable increase in the West during this time as well.  July NPD showed us that they only slightly increased the American Switch shipments while Japan got a much bigger increase for Splatoon which they managed to keep pretty steady outside of the week before Monster Hunter.  Hopefully the upcoming NPD leaks for August show a noticeable increase for Switch here as well.
