The Wii has quite a few records to beat yet. Surpassing the Gameboy,  PS1, and PS2 are all next on the agenda.

Then it will have a real fight on its hands to overtake the DS (which I do not think it can do).

It's possible that the Wii already beat the Game Boy, we don't know though since Nintendo combined Game Boy and Game Boy Color sales together.

Not this again...

The Wii will never surpass the DS because 1) families tend to buy more than one per household, and 2) hardware revisions mean there are plenty of repeat buyers.

Sheeeeeeiiiiiiit. We haven't even gotten different color Wiis yet. I can only imagine how many people are holding off for a black Wii or would double dip to get one.

Then there is Pink, Blue, Green & Red Wiis that we haven't heard a mention of since E3 2006.

I think the number of people who would buy another system just for a different colour is minuscule, especially because of the amount of important data which can't be transferred to another system.

but imagine all the people that would buy one for the girls room because it was pink or the people that have been playing someone elses and now that they see it in black or blue would just bite the bullet and get one for themselves.

There is a huge untapped consumer base out there that would get one just because or because the price was right. wait till the Wii is only $99.99. At this same point in time the Wii is selling faster then the DS and the DS is way past it's prime, but they both still have lots of room on the price.

Picture the frenzy at Xmas 2011 when the DSi is only $99, the Wii is $149 and you can get either of them in a nice range of colors.

Outsell the DS or not, the DS/Wii combo have the potential to be the #1/#2 best selling game systems ever.

The Wii will never surpass the DS because 1) families tend to buy more than one per household, and 2) hardware revisions mean there are plenty of repeat buyers.

And aside from that, the DS came out 2 years before the Wii so it has a good head start. Plus the DS' sales are continuing to increase and aren't showing any signs of slowing down.

I think the DS is destined to be the number one system of all time. The Wii has no hope of ever overtaking it, but it could become 2nd.

Wii/DS outsells NES/GB

"Needless to say, these are just two milestones of a larger journey in our efforts to reach the ultimate goal of bringing one home console for every household and one handheld for everyone," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explained in his presentation.

Wii and Nintendo DS Outsell NES and GameBoy

Having updated its lifetime hardware sales figures, Nintendo today confirmed that the Wii has outsold the Nintendo Entertainment System--making Wii the "best selling Nintendo home videogame console of all time"--while the Nintendo DS has replaced the GameBoy as its best-selling hardware of all time.

"Needless to say, these are just two milestones of a larger journey in our efforts to reach the ultimate goal of bringing one home console for every household and one handheld for everyone," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explained in his presentation.

Wii Sports and New Super Mario Bros. DS

A breakdown of some top-selling Wii and Nintendo DS games accompanied the revelation, with the original Wii Sports--bundled with Wii hardware everywhere except Japan, where it is sold seperately--now at 60.69 million copies worldwide.

Nintendo DS Software - Lifetime Sales of Select Titles
          o Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver - 3.7 million
          o Pokemon Platinum - 6.86 million
o New Super Mario Bros. - 21.39 million
          o Tomodachi Collection - 2.74 million
          o Mario Kart DS - 17.28 million
o The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - 2.45 million
o Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box - 2.23 million
          o Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - 2.62 million
o Professor Layton and the Curious Village - 3.04 million
o Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - 1.33 million
o Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day - 18.59 million

Wii Software - Lifetime Sales of Select Titles
          o Wii Sports - 60.60 million
          o Wii Sports Resort - 13.58 million
o New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 10.55 million
          o Wii Fit Plus - 10.16 million
          o Mario Kart Wii - 21.22 million
          o Wii Fit - 22.56 million
          o Wii Play - 26.71 million

As for the relevant portion of Iwata's presentation, here's what he had to say:

Family Computer System, called Nintendo Entertainment System or NES in short in overseas markets, had sold 61.91 million units, which was the largest unit sales figure for any Nintendo home videogame consoles.

The cumulative sales of Wii hardware from Nintendo to our distributors and retail customers reached 67.45 million units as of the end of December 2009. It has replaced NES to become the best selling Nintendo home videogame console of all time.

Among handheld hardware, GameBoy series have sold through 118.69 million units in total since the launch, which was the largest unit sales figure among all Nintendo's hardware products.

As of the end of December 2009, when Wii marked the record LTD sales as the number one selling Nintendo home console, the life-to-date shipments of Nintendo DS series reached 125.13 million units, which has now become largest sales figure among all of the Nintendo's videogame hardware.

Needless to say, these are just two milestones of a larger journey in our efforts to reach the ultimate goal of bringing one home console for every household and one handheld for everyone.

Straight from the horses mouth.

sleeper gamer = casual maybe? They buy games for a season then 'sleep' for a while and then go on a buying spree down the road again (aka the Giftmas gamer)?

According to the transcript of Iwata's presentation, a sleep user is someone who hasn't played a game for a year.

Apparently, I own 32 of those supposed million sellers. But I'm also like "WAH?" There's House of the Dead 2 + 3 on there! And Star Wars: Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels! Interesting guesstimates from VGChartz, to say the least.

Games like Clone Wars and MotD 2+3 were always reported to be sleeper hits I think. This includes worldwide sales and its interesting to see what ones had more sales in 'other' regions.

I only own about 12, but there are also 8 I plan on getting eventually.
