Nintendo Gaming / Super Mario RPG 3, Any Chances??
« on: March 06, 2003, 04:28:35 PM »
I agree with Ian Sane; if they made a Nintendo RPG they should make no references to Nintedo itself.  They should make each world in the same galaxy, and use the Great Fox or Samus's ship to get between worlds. And it souldn't be like Kingdom Hearts, were you only get to control one character and the others are computer controlled; you should get to control every character.  Even as far back as the first Mario RPG, I thought they should make a Nintendo RPG.  It would be very cool to have all sorts of Nintendo characters together, like in Smash Bros, but in a RPG.

Nintendo Gaming / Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker Playable Demo
« on: March 04, 2003, 10:32:49 AM »
I jsut went to Wal-mart to by some supplies I needed for a school art project, and I made my habitual stop by the electronics department, and they had a playable demo of Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker!  I only had enough time to play it for a minute or two, but it looks great in action.  Anyway, I thought I should get the word out.  Go check your local stores; they may have the playable demo!

Nintendo Gaming / New Zelda Look
« on: March 03, 2003, 02:13:42 PM »
I don't think the new Link design is bad at all; espicially since they fixed him up a bit from when they first revealed the cel-shaded look.  The art direction for this game does indeed remind me of the 2D Zelda games, and that to me is a good thing.  Also, the cartoonish and exagerated character design gives the game more personality I believe.  The prospect of controlling a cartoon is so exciting. But maybe I just appreciate the artistic vision of this game because I myself am an (aspiring) artist.  Anyway, let's just give this game a chance, and play it before we start pronouncing how bad it is.  No need to be premature.

Nintendo Gaming / Sega was rumored to be bought by Nintendo?
« on: February 28, 2003, 06:08:22 AM »
If (and I stress if,) Sega is going to be bought out and become a Second Party developer, I pray to sweet Lord Jesus that Nintendo buys them.  I think Nintendo would give Sega the most freedom with their games. Besides, Nintendo has already deveoloped the Triforce with Sega, and let Sega make the new F-Zero.  And F-Zero looks to be a great game, demontrating Sega's and Nintendo's good working relationship.  With their tag-team power on their franchises, we could expect to see some impressive results.

General Gaming / AIAS Snapshots
« on: February 28, 2003, 04:31:50 AM »
The only shot of Link I saw in the D.I.C.E. snapshot article was a shot of Link in Soul Calibur II; it was quite blurry.  Is that the one you are talking about?

Nintendo Gaming / new gamcube controller.
« on: February 27, 2003, 05:01:00 AM »
Yeah, the problem with the sniper rifle in TS2 wass not the controller, but the blasted snap to center function; it was applied to all weapons when you used the aim or zoom button. They should have included the option to turn it off.
rojkai is correct in my opinion, in that the Cube's controllers are not too good for Capcom fighters; but then again, Capcom games were designed around the 6 button, linearly arranged scheme of arcades, so it has problems transfering to any console controller.  The PS2 doesn't even have a great layout for Capcom 2d fighters; it is alright, but using the shoulder buttons and its ill-concieved d-pad can still be troublesome for certain combos.  Other fighting games, however, seem to translate to console controllers better; 3d fighters rely on different  kinds of combo systems and button configurations.

Nintendo Gaming / new gamcube controller.
« on: February 26, 2003, 06:38:12 PM »
I must also say that I think the Cube's controller is excellent, even for FPS games. Time Splitters 2 with the C-stick took a second to get used to, but then it was no problem.  I do aggree with Tokerev on one issue though; I think the C-stick could have benifited from a "cap" or thumb pad or whatnot, like the Control stick has.  It is not bad at all as it is, but with a pad like that my thumb woud grip it better.  As it is now my thumb occasionally slips off the smooth nub of the C-stick.  But I still think the Cube's controller is the best.  I rate the 3 consoles controlers in this order: First Gamecube, then Xbox, and lastly Playstation 2.  The PS2's stick are too unresponsive in my opinion.  They seem to be barely analog; not at all as sensitive as the Xbox and Cube controlers.  I like the Xbox's analog stick "click" function. It is a cool way to add an extra button, and it does a better job of it than the PS2's analog stick "click."  Being able to zoom and crouch by simply pressing the sticks down in Halo is an excellent control scheme; it leaves your fingers free to use other buttons.  I wish the Cube had the "stick click."

Nintendo Gaming / Intrested in FF:CC

Crystal Cronicles is looking more and more interesting.  I love the visual style. However, the "baby face"  design of the human characters I don't like too much.  It is not a big complaint at all, almost a non-issue.  What I am really curious about is the GBA conectivity, and what role will it play; will it be optional or not?  If it is not optional, I am sure that the A, B, L, and R buttons will be enough, but I agree with Hemmorrhoid in that I would rather use the Cube's control stick than the GBA's d-pad.  But if it does require the GBA, it could open some interesting possibilities, such as all menu selection and spell selection and such taking place on the GBA, so it does not crowd the TV screen; each player could then access his personal menu without having to pause the game and everyone else.  From the screen shots, this scenario seems to be close to the truth.  It will be interesting to see exactly how the game works and plays.

Also would you rate FF4 (akaFF2-US) beter or worse than FF7/9?  (again just curious)

I haven't checked this topic in so long; this response may be a bit late, but here it goes. (hopefully the question was directed at me)

The main reason I liked FF6 over 7 and 9 was the story and characters.  Gameplay wise I liked all the Final Fantasy games (except 8 wasn't my thing; too slow and monotonous for me.) FF6's story and characters were a good blend of deep and simple.  There are magical beings, known as Espers, and an evil empire wants to suck out their magic to conquer the world. (That is the short version.)  When FF7 went on the whole "save the planet/sprit of the earth" thing I was just waiting for Captain Planet and the planeteers to show up.  And there were parts of the story that did not seem fleshed out or explained enough to me, such as the ancients and their origin and such.
The character's lacked the same charm that the old ones had in my opinion.  Part of the problem is the newer Final Fantasies are moving to more movie like presentations, no longer presented in sprite animations and text boxes, but in cut scenes and such.  This thematic direction is not a problem to me in and of itself, but it just throws the story of the game even further into the foreground, thus making the flaws or weak spots in the stories all the more visible and dissapointing.  The newer generation of Final Fantasies just reek of the same crap they used to make the "Spirits Within" storyline.  That was not a good movie story wise, and as the games become more akin to movies, that kind of thing won't cut it.

In other words, if you have a GC game the GBA can enhance it a little if you own one. They are going the wrong direction with that. The GBA is having no problem selling, it's the GC that needs the boost. They need to make GBA owners think they need the GC.

That is a very good observation, and I agree that Nintendo should explore this aspect of the GBA/GC conectivity.  As it is now, the conectivity is a nice feature, but not a system seller (in my opinion at least.)  This approach may help reverse that. Keep the GC bonuses too, but increase the GBA bonuses as well.

Also I would love to see more free N64 ports or even Super Nintendo ports given out with preorders as Nintendo did with the Zelda preorder.  That would be spectacular.  But I doubt Nintendo will do it too often; amybe for one or two other games. I wonder how much money it cost to release the Zelda preorder disc, versus how much they make back in preorders and sales.

Nintendo Gaming / PIKMIN 2 screens (and kirbys air ride screens)
« on: February 25, 2003, 04:33:30 AM »
The pictues of Pikmin 2 must be of a very early build, because the level looks no where as good as the orignal's level grapics.  They'll fix it up before launch no doubt, though.  Anyway, I wish I could see more on Kirby's Air Ride.  Of course we all know what Pikmin is about, but is Kirby's Air Ride a racer?  I assume so.  But they already have Mario Kart on the way, so that would be neat if Kirby's Air Ride was Nintendo's take on extreme skateboarding or snowboarding games.  Or Starboarding in this case.  Tony Hawk with Kirby instead.  But I doubt that is the case.
Also, wasn't Kirby's Air Ride in development even all the way back at the last days of the N64?  I seem to remember that it was going to come out for the 64.

Nintendo Gaming / Zelda bonus disk boxart.
« on: February 24, 2003, 06:56:52 PM »
I like your redesign of the box art.  Good work.  That is the kind of stuff I enjoy doing myself, actually; art and design work.  But I whole heartedly agree with Gibdo Master and Taco.  There is no reason to complain too much.  It was free.  I am sure they just picked it because it was a quick and cheap design that could showcase both titles at the same time.  But you want to make your own, that is fine.

I agree that people need to decide for themselves which games they want, but it is helpful when torn between two games (as I was) to hear what other people liked or disliked about a game, to see which of the two might better suit your tastes.  Normaly I just get recommendations from my friends or try out their copy of a game, but sometimes my friends haven't played the game I am interested in.  It is in that case that forums like this can help give me a little extra information, so that I can make a better informed decision.  But my heart was already set on either Dark Cloud 2 or Skies of Arcadia Legends.

Thanks to Munky, PIAC, and Christberg for their input.  With your guys help, I have decided on Skies of Arcadia.  I was really torn between it and Dark Cloud 2.  So I am going to get Skies of Arcadia, and slide Dark Cloud 2 on to the back burner for now and pick it up later.  I may rent Splinter cell one day just to try it out.  Many thanks for the input guys!

Nintendo Gaming / IGN reports the next Triforce game
« on: February 24, 2003, 04:05:10 AM »
An arcade card game sounds like an interesting experiment.  I am not into card games or video game versions of them, but nonetheless I think this is a most ineteresting idea.  I presume it is made to attract fans of card games to arcades, and let hope it works.  Developing entirely different games than the traditional arcade fare may spark interest in arcades again.

Ok, to get back on track with the "Official 'What game should I get?' Thread," I just paid all my school debts for the semester, and I have enough money left over for one game.  Now, the trouble with my desicion is that I have all three consoles, so my choice of games is so broad I have trouble deciding.  However, the games I am interested in are Skies of Arcadia for the Cube, Dark Cloud 2 for PS2, and Splinter Cell for the Xbox.  My favorite of the three systems is the Cube, so I buy games for it more often, and I am leaning towards Skies of Arcadia, but still in the throwes of indesicion.  So, if anyone has anything to say about that game, or any of the others, let me know. I would especially like to hear from people who have played both Skies of Arcadia and Dark Cloud 2 about which they thought was a better RPG.  I must chose wisely, for this game I purcase now must fill the void between now and when my preordered copy of The Wind Waker arrives.

Nintendo Gaming / Hardest Single Thing To Do On Gamecube?
« on: February 23, 2003, 02:24:11 PM »
I would have to say getting everything it Rogue Leader.  Beating every difficulty and getting everything in Time Splitters 2 is insanely hard also, but with Rogue Leader I can not even envision it a possible to get all the golds.  I am sure people have, but it was way too hard to even begin to be fun for me to try and get every gold.

Nintendo Gaming / Soul Calibur 2 Discussion!
« on: February 23, 2003, 02:16:11 PM »
I got to play the Arcade version of Soul Calibur II, and I think it lives up to the glory of Soul Calibur I perfectly.  I never owned a Dreamcast, but I played the DC Soul Calibur with friends, and I played Soul Calibur I in the arcade occasionally, so I have some basis for comparison.  From my arcade experience with Soul Calibur II, I believe it will appease old fans perfectly; I dare say it is better than Soul Calibur I.

Nintendo Gaming / ZELDA !?!?!

The Bonus preoder bundle come with Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time, and Orcarina of Time Master Quest. (The Master Quest being the same game rereleased with harder dungeons.) Both take advantage of the Gamecube's addtional power to boost the resolution significantly, but other than that the graphics are the same as the N64 versions.

Yes, and yes.  I just downloaded the video.  This game looks to be the stuff of legends. Legends, I say.  The worlds are expasive and detailed beyond my ability to comprehend it.  Words are not enough.  Those of you who have yet to do so, download that video.  For all you who said there are no must have games for the Cube, look no further; this game is must have.

And to answer your question sequoia, all the music I have heard so far have been techno remixs, but one of the techno tracks had some guitar wailing in it.  Still, hopefully they'll have some speed metal too.  I would like me some of that.

Pardon my French, as they say, but,

The arcade cabinet looks totally BAD-ASS!!

It needs to come to the States now.  Yesterday. Anyway, if any of you can read Japanese, please take a look at the link Mingesium
posted and see if it divulges any details about the Gamcube and Arcade memory card connectivity, then post your finding here.  I would appreciate it very much.

Nintendo Gaming / wavebird?
« on: February 18, 2003, 04:23:33 PM »
The Wavebird is excellent. By all means, buy one.  On average, the batteries last for 100 hours of use; so the fact it needs batteries is not very much of a problem or money drain.  As most people have said in the above posts, the thing responds perfectly, and works from much further away than you could possibly still see the tv from.  The only "downside" is the lack of rumble feature (which was removed to extend battery life and keep the size from getting any bigger.) This is a very minor downside; even though rumble feature is cool, after palying with a Wavebird, I bet you won't even miss the rumble feature.

I agree completely.  I think music is a vastly underapreicated and often under developed part of video games.  FF6 had the best music of the final fantasy series; also, many Super Nintendo games had more lasting music then most of today's games.  Part of what made games like Metriod Prime and Super Smash Bros. Melee great, and even Halo was their superb music.  Of, course gameplay is the biggest factor in making a game great, but music is a part of the design and art direction, and too often I believe it goes underdeveloped.

Nintendo Gaming / Reviews for GC games: How much do you depend on them?
« on: February 17, 2003, 08:26:42 PM »
As Mr. WindyMan said, I like to read reviews after I buy a game to see what they think of it, but I almost never rely on review scores to make my purchasing decisions.  Sometimes, I read review about games before I buy them, but just on games I know nothing about and I want to learn about the premise of the game or what the gameplay entails.  I use reviews more as a sneek peek into the play mechanics and inner workings of a game, and don't rely on the rating systems much at all.
