Nintendo Announces Wii Successor, Launching in 2012
« on: April 25, 2011, 03:57:51 AM »

More details and playable system to arrive at E3.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26141

Along with their fiscal earnings report, Nintendo released a memo regarding the Wii's successor, set to launch in 2012. The simple note is similar to one released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2010.

The brief statement notes that the system will be playable at this year's E3 in Los Angeles, which runs from June 7 - 9. The company will announce more specifications at that time. While the system is expected to launch in 2012, Nintendo did not include it in earnings forecasts for the fiscal term ending March 31, 2012.

This is certainly looking to be one of the better E3s we've had in a while:

- The reveal of the Fall 3DS software.
- The reveal of hardware details and software for the NGP, as well as playable units.
- The reveal of hardware details and software for the Wii 2, as well as playable units.
- Whatever Microsoft plans on announcing to combat the prior 3 items on this list.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

I will have to scratch off my guess that the Project Cafe will release in early Spring or the Summer. More likely than not, this system will come out around November 2012. I guess that's for the better as that means more time for games to be made.

Now, I hope there will be good news at this E3 for the Wii's last year in the spotlight.

Indeed. This is shaping up to be an E3 to remember.
I wasn't aware that the date was 7th-9th June though. My final exam is right after that, so revision has to take priority over reading and watching the coverage, which is unfortunate. It's going to require a lot of discipline not to be distracted by E3.

The games are likely the main factor for the release date, they have to kickstart the 3DS and then the Cafe, that's going to take a lot of effort and they can't do it all at the same time.

Very surprised that it's playable at E3 and coming out next year. Surely Nintendo must be aware that this gives plenty of time for the competition *cough* Sony *cough* to evaluate and plagiarize Nintendo's ideas.

So not only is it confirmed, coming out next year, but it's going to be PLAYABLE at E3??? That's remarkable, especially for Nintendo. So I presume they will unveil some of the software that will launch with it. Can't wait for E3 this year!
This is where I would write something witty or funny if I had any ideas.

Though that is relatively typical to show the sytem at the E3 within the year its going to be released more or less final.

Look at the Sixaxis. Sony will need to understand it before copying it which will require some years of applied game development.

Playable? This thing has to be further along then most people assumed them. I still think they'll shoot for a early 2012 release. Just because it isn't apart of the earning forecast for March 2012 now doesn't mean they can't revise those numbers later and make it apart of it. They'll most likely wait to drop that bomb if that's the case at E3.

There is a difference between understanding the hardware and duplicating and understanding the decision that drove it and applying it. The Move shows a grasp of the first part, the Kinect shows the second.

And there you have it, I guess this confirms that they will be showing a new system at E3. We probably won't find out anything else until that time, though, and it's likely the only reason they sent this out is because the rumours started.

I'll bet money that the the new Nintendo handheld will launch November 19th 2012.  My belief in that is based on the fact that the Gamecube launched on November 18th and the Wii launched November 19th.  They seem to have started a precedent for console launches in that time.  Personally (and I'm positive this will not happen) I'd love to see the console launch with Pikmin 3, a slew of third party games, and a special Zelda pack containing a directors cut version of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

The move certainly shows more understanding than the sixaxis. I'm not sure the Kinect was driven by real understanding and not just "hey, it's a new gimmick!".

Actually when this all started up, the original leak @ GameInformer had stated that they were supposed to sit on this news until after Nintendo officially announced it later this month which was speculated to be today.

Now that's official, I just want state my predictions for the record, before it's revealed:

  • Obviously, the hardware will offer full HD and be on par with, if not significantly more powerful than Xbox 360 and PS3.
  • The standard control method will be an upgrade of the basic Wii Remote design.
  • The system's "gimmick" will be a wireless streaming feature that will allow for the display to be transferred for viewing on other devices such as a standard multi-functional 6-inch touch pad, or to the 3DS, so a user can play away from the TV when desired, allowing for portability around the house, and freeing up the TV for others to use without disrupting gameplay.
  • The 6-in. touch pad, will be a separate peripheral, and NOT part of the standard controller. It will have multiple functions (such as a keyboard, secondary view perspective, writing pad, etc.). It will also have a stand so it can be propped up when desired.
  • The system's name will not be revealed this year.
Now, that my predictions have been made, let's wait and see just how accurate I am...
