TalkBack / RE: North American Virtual Console Releases

The menus have been translated for the VC release of Sin & Punishment. And you can start over at the beginning of the world you're in instead of 1-1 in the original SMB by holding A and pressing start at the title screen after a game over.

I fail to see why this is an issue with SMS, not to mention the fact that changing things like enemy patterns really would change what the Mario series about.  So what would be best? Instead of the dumb enemies that we all know and love, maybe have a goomba take cover when he sees Mario come? Or perhaps have the bobombs conduct search patterns and then notify the koopa troopas when Mario is spotted. Maybe also have a feature where when you kill a koopa troopa you have to hide his shell so it isn't spotted by an enemy?

That's the game Kojima and Konami are doing in return for having Snake in Brawl, Metal Gear Mario.

Any translation of Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) would be unnecessary as the entire game was originally in English anyway.

The Lost Levels in SMB Deluxe has the last 5 worlds cut out of it, it's not a very good version.

I want the ability to use the home button or at least the power button while playing GameCube games but I'm afraid that's probably something they'd have to have built in to the hardware.

I'd imagine the game controls better with a GameCube controller, as I've bought all the previous N64 VC games and every single one of them controlled better and felt better with the GC pad than the Classic Controller.

Wait, wasn't there some kind of Sakurai quote that said all the characters from the original game were definitely in? So why are we now worried that Ness is out?

If I remember correctly Sakurai didn't definitively say there wouldn't be any Japan-only characters, he just said that they were trying to avoid them.

That was my first reaction. Let's hope it gets the Fire Emblem treatment.

« on: September 30, 2007, 08:02:35 PM »
I agree, I think that relying too much on motions in a more traditional game can kill it. I remember seeing a developer interview in which
the developer said that Nintendo had told them to not force motion control and only use it where it works. I think that's great advice, and
it's great that Nintendo realizes that it doesn't work for everything. Their games so far (at least Strikers and Metroid) have shown that it's
the way to go. Metroid using the nunchuk motion for grappling is something that could easily be done with a button, but it being done with
the motion pulls you into the game and makes it one of my favorite parts of the game. The same goes for the hard hits in Strikers and
sword slashing in Twilight Princess, the Wiimote shake gets the adrenaline pumping in the heat of the battle way more than any button
pressing ever could.

I just thought of something. If all Pokemon Trainer's opponents avoid the attack the text box should say "It's not very effective..."

You heard that people, there's actually a game GP likes less than No More Heroes. We'll all be called as witnesses for the prosecution after GP blows up Ubisoft HQ to stop production of this game.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii fall schedule OVERLOAD. Time to trim the list :(
« on: September 24, 2007, 11:06:53 PM »
There's nowhere near enough love for Battalion Wars in this thread.

1. Super Mario Galaxy
2. SSB: Brawl
3. Battalion Wars 2
4. Star Trek: Conquest
5. Guitar Hero III
6. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

And also maybe
MySims
MLB Power Pros
Zack & Wiki
Namco Museum Remix
The Simpsons Game
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Medal of Honor Heroes 2
Geometry Wars: Galaxies
NiGHTS
Nitrobike
Mario & Sonic at the Olympics
Race Driver: Create & Race
Panzer Tactics
Front Mission
Chessmaster DS
Contra 4
Mario Party DS

Actually, looking at that list and seeing only 6 must-haves makes me more confident that I'll be in good shape this year. Also, Mass Effect is my 3rd-most anticipated game this year, but I don't think I'll be able to afford the 360 to play it on without obliterating the rest of the list.

Puyo Puyo is okay, but I traded in my DS version because 3 weeks after I bought it I bought Meteos and never looked back. There are quite a few puzzle games I'd put ahead of this, though none of them are currently available on the VC. Ah well, I only play puzzle games on handhelds anyway.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Looking for Rare about VC release article

http://www.rareware.com/extras/scribes/30aug07/index.html  (It's a long page, so I'd advise using your browser's Find feature and searching for "Virtual Console".

It is mentioned twice, the second time having a much more helpful answer: "As for VC, it's ultimately Nintendo's decision what gets released. Beyond the DKC games we don't have anything in the pipeline at the moment, but that doesn't mean it won't happen in future."

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Rygar on Wii
« on: September 21, 2007, 12:38:07 PM »
1up did an interview with the developer. To sum it up: Most of the development went toward perfecting the Wii controls, they've also fixed some issues with the types of enemies that people had with the original, the developer says he would love to do a full sequel for the Wii if this is successful.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Sega expects Mario & Sonic to sell...
« on: September 21, 2007, 09:38:31 AM »
I'm cautiously optimistic here. It's Sega, a company I love, but I realize they aren't what they once were, though they are being managed by Nintendo. Nintendo has been able to bring order to chaos before, hopefully having their marquee mascot in the mix will provide them the motivation to step in and keep Sega from screwing it up. I'm considering a purchase, and if they don't screw it up, and especially if the Miyamoto-hinted Fencing makes its way in there I will be one of those 4 million.

And as it has been said, WiiSports like gameplay with the meeting of two bitter 16-bit rivals that even the nonniest nongamers know about and releasing it worldwide on the 2 most popular game platforms out there right now; 4 million is a rather conservative estimate when you look at it that way.

A mix of Civilization and Pikmin? Oh no, this game will consume me. I'm having Deja Vu for when I was reading EGM and they described Animal Crossing as a mix of The Sims and Harvest Moon. And this pairing is even higher on my favorites list. Civ is my absolute favorite PC game series and I would call Pikmin 2 the best game on the GameCube. This is one of those times I wish the rest of my life had a pause button so I could just lose myself in this for a while.

Magazines still get exclusives, magazines do bigger features, and, most importantly for me, magazines make it much easier for a game I'd never heard of to catch my eye. I have probably about a dozen game sites in my RSS reader, but I generally ignore stuff about games I haven't heard of or don't have any interest in. I generally read, or at least look at, everything in the magazines I get, and I find things that I would have otherwise missed.

Oh, and Rachtman: Alan (the blue slime) hasn't written for NP in quite a while.
