That's a lot less of a problem in this case given the option of buying it digitally, though.
But this brings its own set of problems, the biggest one being that it's a lot tougher to find a good sale on digital games than physical.

Seriously.  With how things are going Broodwars is going to need a NAS for his Console.

After the 90's I've never had this much problem with games and space.

and both selling considerably less than the Dreamcast at their respective times after launch. Does that speak to how bad the console market is in Japan or just how awesome the Dreamcast was?

I think the market is more complicated now than it was then, Dreamcast was the hot new item, PS1 and N64 were showing their age. Wii U is already showing its age and PS4 is the hot new item but its also has to compete with PS3 and 3DS/New 3DS. Also notice how they lump New 3DS in with 3DS sales so its harder to tell if the newer model is actually selling.

Are you speaking exclusively about Japan here? Because PS4 has outsold the Dreamcast worldwide. In the US and Europe, PS4 passed Dreamcast's LTD sales months ago. At this point in Japan it's about on par with 1/3 of Dreamcast's sales after it's 3 years of being sold in the region.

Yeah i was only talking about Japan. WW Dreamcast sold like 10.5million in 18 months before it got canned. Specifically, I'm talking about in Japan where the PS4 was the fastest console to sell under 10,000 per week (without shortages) by a few weeks. It's still selling like crap to only have launched like 8 months ago.

Dreamcast was sold for 2.5 years in Japan before they announced its demise. But anyway, PS4 will probably hit about 13 million by its first anniversary (in 2 weeks), I'd say 15.5 million easily by the end of the year. Poor sales in Japan or not, that's still pretty damn good, making the Dreamcast comparison basically irrelevant. Also, that prize of fastest console to sell under 10,000 per month in Japan surely goes to Xbox 360, or the original Xbox, does it not? The original sold about 500,000 units in 3 years, the 360 sold 1.5 million in 6.

You're right. I forgot DC sold for a year in Japan before it came to the states (I shouldn't post at 4am while doing back-ups). However since I was commenting on the Japanese Sales, I think its pretty relevant to the point. As well as PS4 is doing worldwide, it's stinking up the joint in the homeland and I used Dreamcast sales (considered by most to be an abject failure) to give some color to contrast the raw data of PS4 doubling Wii U sales for the last month.

The PS4 is selling quite well, only second to the WII first year sales while the WII U is on life support.  Nintendo really needs to drop it's price now that MS has made it's move because Smash Bros alone won't be enough.

It's sad that the Gamepad is keeping the price high because the majority of titles don't even use the features other than off-screen play.

I would say that goes to XB1.  It's been out 6 weeks in Japan? It's already in 3 digits.  It took one week to go from 5 digits to less than 3,000.  The last 3 weeks have been less than 1000 I think.

But we're apparently not supposed to count Microsoft products, because it makes the PS4 look worse that way. If we ignore Microsoft products, then the number of post-Dreamcast consoles drops 33% (PS2, GameCube, PS3, Wii, PS4, Wii U instead of PS2, GameCube, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Wii U, PS4, Xbone).

I'm not sure my intent was to make the PS4 look worst but I think its unnecessary to count a system/company that we all knew would fail in that region. Its an irrelevant (game) company in Japan. Its been that way for over 10 years and nothing about the XboxOne looks like its bound to change that. Further Sony failing isn't good for any company in gaming. Just commenting on the raw data is all with my own spin on the best way to judge it.

Dreamcast was barely on the market for what 4 years MAX, PS4 is going to do double that EASY. Dreamcast also had NO competition for the first year and a half it was on the market, two and a half if you count Japan. Also Dreamcast was the console Sega had promised to deliver no shortcomings they set out to fix everything wrong with the Saturn and they did. PS4 is an entirely different thing. It is facing a fiercely competitive console/mobile market where it has to compete with its last gen little brother, its portable and not-so-portable second cousin, and a Japanese-centric Wii U that has had a year head start. Comparing it to Dreamcast is silly. The consensus is Dreamcast was a failure so its a benchmark is flawed, Sega pulled the plug on Dreamcast, it was selling very well they were just too deep in debt to afford continued support because 1, they were taking losses on the machine, 2, their fees were too low to recoup, 3, they invested tons of money into an online infrastructure that didn't pay off, 4, they spent, at the time, an insane amount of money producing Shenmue for a major loss, and 5 PS1 was still getting all the big titles and PS2 was stealing all the next-gen thunder. IF Sega had the money like MS or Sony Dreamcast would not have been a failure, they discontinued it despite it selling really well. Sony is riddled with debt so that is the only comparison worth making, even still Sony has been restructuring and unlike Sega who made the mistake of butchering their core business in the weird hopes of keeping their console development in tact, Sony has done a pretty good job cutting the fat and if worse comes to worse they still have assets they could sell off for a premium and turn things around, Sega there was no going back they had nothing to sell, they sold off their entire sports line and that didn't work out so good for the entire industry now did it?

Xbox can still holds its own here in the States, especially with this new resurrgeance of "buy America" sweeping parts of the nation, Japan is a lost cause for Xbox but not Sony, I still firmly believe they will ultimately win Japan handily.

I think the reason Nintendo fans root for Sony bombing in Japan probably has to do with Nintendo needing to have a "win" in their camp in order to not lose all hope. Personally I have exhausted any hope I have left for Nintendo, I mainly got a Wii U now because if it does tank in a year or so, even if it takes that long to do so, it will still have a few good games in the mean time and as always its a Nintendo console if its anything like Saturn the more Wii U games I can get and hold onto the more money for me down the road when they turn into gold.

And we're also pretty sure everyone here knows the Japanese market will not matter this generation when it comes to console games, just as it didn't last generation. I'm sure Sony's crying hard over the Japanese market flopping when they've sold 13.5 million PS4s to Japanese-centric Nintendo's 7+ million Wii Us.

Great Smash numbers! I'm a little surprised that it did so well seeing as it is on a handheld. Curious to see if this has any effect on the Wii U version sales wise.

I'm disappointed to see Alien: Isolation and Sunset Overdrive perform so poorly (not even making the list, though at least Sunset Overdrive has the excuse of being on the Xbone for only 4 days before the price drop. We could see it appear in November...but not likely), especially with **** like Evil Within, Destiny, and NBA 2K15 on there. I'm not surprised at all, though, to not see Bayonetta 2 on there.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.
