I agree, though I think we'll be looking at something like the sales of Wii Sports Resort: it'll perform admirably, but nothing exceptional compared to the other Wii ______ games.  I estimate that it'll probably hit around 5-6 million unit worldwide in probably steady but not particularly impressive bursts.

Wii Sports Resort has sold more than 16 million units worldwide.

Go figure.  I think we've seen it maybe twice on the NPDs, so it's easy to lose track of.  I still think Wii Party's going to suffer a little franchise and genre fatigue, though.

The thing is, since Nintendo and the Wii series are at the top of the genre, even if there is some fatigue the game will still be a huge hit and has a good chance of being another 10 million + seller.  When you've built up a huge mega audience like Nintendo has, even if say 25% of the audience is burned out, the other 75% will still make their product a giant hit.

July 2009 -  #1 (508.2K)
August 2009 - #2 (754K)
September 2009 - #2 (442.9K)
October 2009 - #4 (314K)
November 2009 - #7 (720.2K)
December 2009- #3 (1.79 million)
January 2010 - #6 (297.6K)
February 2010 - #5 (272.5K)
March 2010 - #11
April 2010 - #6 (179K)
May 2010 - #20
June 2010 - #20

So it was in the top 10 for its first 8 consecutive months, and last month was the first time it wasn't in the top 20 (and I think it's obvious that the reason for the sharp drop is that the game now comes bundled with the Wii, so new Wii owners don't need to buy the game). The game has sold 19.16 million copies as of June 30, making it the 5th best selling Wii game.

Nintendo should be able to turn a profit on the Wii after a price cut. I'm not sure how much profit they make right now at the $199 price point, but you can be sure its something. They were turning a profit on hardware since launch, and its a well established fact that over time production costs go down, so its perfectly reasonable for a company like Nintendo to pass the reduced cost of production on to the consumers. After all, didn't Nintendo sell the Gamecube at $99 and were still making a profit? Of course, the Wii is more than just a Gamecube and I'm sure it costs more to make, but is the difference really THAT great? If Nintendo could sell the GC at $79 and still turn a profit in its final years, then would it really be problem to cut the Wii down to $149?

Maybe not yet. Wasn't the profit margin on Wii at launch something like $27 per console? I have no doubt they are making a profit not since they would not have dropped the price unless they would still make a profit, but I question whether they could drop it to $150 right now. I also see no reason for them to do it since sales are still good.

I'm sure Nintendo is not paying over $100 right now to produce any Wii.
I'm sure the controller cost them around $20-&25 with all accessories(M+ & Nunchuck) too.

I'm positive Nintendo could drop the Wii to $150 and still make a profit over a year ago, but it's more of a question of why?
Why would they when it still sell perfectly fine at the current price point. Thats potential lost profits and there was no need for up to this point in time.

The remaining Arcade models, which aren't in production anymore, are $150. The new low end model is back up to $200.

Also, anyone considering buying a 360 without a hard drive at this point (or at least the ones who don't already own a 360) would be better served by a $200 Wii than a $150 360. For a gamer, a hard drive is necessary, and someone who isn't a traditional gamer would be better off with a Wii than a 360. Even if it were $50 more, you're getting two great games with it. I'm not sure if the 360 currently has games bundled with it, but if it does they surely aren't anywhere near the quality of Wii Sports and Resort. A lot of the Wii audience wouldn't even look at the 360 anyway; for them the choice is between getting a Wii and not getting a Wii, with no third option.

"For a gamer, a hard drive is necessary,"

Actually the Jasper's arcades came with onboard memory, the same amount as the WII so as long as you don't plan on downloading tons of DLC or XBL Arcade games then you should be fine.  Also the newer updates allowed 360's USB harddrive support so additional memory is pretty damn cheap compared to a year ago when the only options where an overpriced HD or MU.

The arcade does come with tokens and a few toss away games like Pac-Man but the Xbox has the better selection when it comes to games and pricing.  Alot of the WII's hits are still at the $50 price point, Mario Kart for example, while MS has tons of cheap ass greatest hits selection.  Nintendo still doesn't offer Players Choice in the NA regions, not sure why because they do in Japan, not sure about Europe.

I'm pretty sure I have far more than 512 MB worth of game update patches alone on my hard drive. Most game demos take up more than that by themselves. Also, I'd argue that XBLA games are one of the best reasons to own a 360, as there are a lot more exclusives there than there are meaningful retail exclusives. The update allows external USB drives, but only up to 16 GB; for refence, despite going in and cleaning out the stuff I don't need anymore recently, I'm using well over half my 120 GB hard drive. I download more XBLA games than most people, and I have a lot (A LOT) of Rock Band DLC, but that's still over 4 times that limit.

Like I said, depends on the gamer, but I can manage with using just 4GB usb drive (whooping $7.99)just fine.

For a bargin the $150 arcade really is a steal for those not looking at wi-fi connection.  The price performance is on par with the WII because with the $50 difference you'll be able to buy a least two great games from the 360's library.

$200 WII (Sports and Resort)_
$10 Sandisk card (4gb)

$150 Xbox 360
$10 for USB thumbdrive (4gb)
$40 can buy two PH titles

=$210 for either console.

Yes you can.

It might seem like a dumb idea to buy an arcade model and then buy a hard drive for it and end up paying more than it would have to just buy an xbox that already has a hard drive, and that is dumb... but it would make a lot of sense if you already had a spare hard drive laying around and could just pop it into the arcade model. That would be a smart move. I do have some spare hard drives laying around, but they are 3.5" desktop hard drives, so I don't think they'll work. The 360 uses 2.5" notebook hard drives, right?

The 360 only accepts proprietary hard drives now, thanks to a firmware update by Microsoft.

Actually, the Xbox 360 always allowed only Microsoft made HDD's. Maybe people were able to mod it to accept others, but normal Xbox 360's never worked with HDD's other than the ones Microsoft made for it.

Chozo, I have met several people who had their Xbox 360 break and decided to just buy a Arcade unit and put their HDD on the Arcade unit.

Meanwhile I'm really glad I got my 60GB HDD, there are tons of awesome downloadable games on XBLA and installing a game to HDD can really help with games that have annoying load times (EDF 2017 went from short loads between menus to practically no loads, the main level loads weren't affected much but the menu loads were much more annoying).

It's very easy to put a different hard drive in the 360's HDD shell and have it work (and people have been doing this for about 4 years...no one has *ever* gotten in trouble for it), it just needs to be compatible with the tools available. You can get a 250GB HDD for like $40, instead of paying the $130 Microsoft wants. I did that for my regular console.

How'd you get around Microsoft's Firmware update that disabled all storage devices except their official HDDs?
They never did that (technically). They specifically blocked Datel's memory card, but as far as the Xbox 360 is concerned, these *are* official hard drives. You've never been able to just slap a 2.5" HDD in there (well on a JTAG'ed system you can), you have to patch it with an appropriate security sector and update the firmware on the drive to make it look like one that came out of a 360.
I think it says on the box, 'No Hispanics' " - Jeff Green of EA

Why did Art Academy jump from 24th to 2nd in the UK? Was it released on the last day of the previous week? That sometimes happens here where a game will be released like 2 or 3 days before the end of the NPD period, so most of its sales will be in the second month.
