Look at the increase in XBox 360 sales from last month though: 257K! That spike is only because of the release of the new model. It might continue to be around those numbers for July as well, but after that, I'll bet it'll drop sharply.

Looks like Super Mario Galaxy 2 is now over a million. If it keeps at this pace for six months, it will pass up the first game's total in North America.

I know you are kidding, but the last time the Xbox 360 outsold Wii was in February 2010. It's still pretty rare though as this has only happened 8 times in the 44 months the Wii has been out. I have no doubt that a large number of those Xbox 360's sold were people buying the new slim model.

I suspect it has more to do with the clearance prices on the older models: shaving off that much money from a console makes it quite attractive.

I actually think you're right, but you can probably find it for $99 in some places.

I hear all non SLim models are being bundles with 2 extra items(Game+Game, Game+HDMI Cable or Game + Extra Controller).
That's a pretty big incentive for someone who was already on the fence and waiting for a price drop.

I bet Kytim picked up 1 or 2 of them.

By the way, I've got to hand it to Red Dead Redemption for sticking to the top of the sales chart like that: it's not often that a non-Nintendo game doesn't experience a dramatic decrease in sales after its first month.  I'm also impressed at how Just Dance is maintaining its sales figures month-to-month, although I'm sure those will die once the too-early too-samey sequel is released.  On the other hand, didn't they already release that Dance on Broadway game?

The Arcade model has been like that for a long time. The Spring 2010 Arcade bundle comes with Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Viva Pinata, I haven't heard anything about the Pro model being bundled with anything though.

By the way, I've got to hand it to Red Dead Redemption for sticking to the top of the sales chart like that: it's not often that a non-Nintendo game doesn't experience a dramatic decrease in sales after its first month.

And they were rewarded with indefinite unpaid vacation time!!

That's loyalty to the bottom line for ya!

Wow. And Wii Party tops the charts in Japan. I really didn't think that game would do it.

I wonder how it will play out in America? Hmmm...

It's still the smallest debut for a Wii ___ title, though.  On the  other hand, it was stealth-released, and it's hard to say with a  straight face that it was intended to have the same impact as the other  Wii ___ games.

Also, I'm pleased to see Harvest Moon had a good debut, and quite surprised to hear that White Knight's budget release did so well: I didn't think the first game was well received in Japan.

Really? Have you seen how well the other games in the Wii series have done in Japan? I would have been shocked if it wasn't #1.

Black, said to see them lose their jobs but this is not totally unexpected. Developers typically release workers when they finish a big project since they don't need all of those employees anymore. Developers will usually hire new employees when they begin a project and lay them off once the project is complete. People should not act like T2 is doing anything wrong or bad here.

While I understand what you're getting at, and I agree to the extent you're going for, I do feel compelled to say that this model isn't universally adopted, and that it strikes me as being inefficient and self-defeating in the long run.  But then again no one ever accused Take-Two of being wise or efficient!

But it does save money. Why keep paying employees every week to basically sit around and do nothing? In between big projects you simply don't need as many employees, and a public company like Take-Two has to listen to their stockholders and try to explain why they have employees who have nothing to do and are just draining resources.

I disagree; not only are you regularly dispensing of your trained and experienced employees this way, but you're also regularly incurring the expense of recruiting new employees a few weeks later when you start your next project, as well as the expense of training those new and employees bringing them up to speed on your company.  It's like firing most of your wide receivers for a game because you intend to run the ball that Sunday, and then hoping some of them come back the week after.

What they should be doing is either cross-training the employees so that they're useful in more positions, better managing their production schedule to minimize downtime, and/or outsourcing any purely-temporary jobs to outside companies.  A company as large as Take-Two is always going to have multiple projects going on, big and small, so there should always be enough work to go around without this constant cycle of laying off a worker only to replace him with an inexperienced employee a short way down the road.

Moreover, the shareholders of any major company are not going to look for, let alone care about, one or two dozen employees being relatively idle for a few weeks.  They already look the other way at the gross mismanagement that the company has experienced for years now, and in the unlikely event that this is ever brought up that shareholder would be guilty of being penny-wise and pound-foolish.

I disagree, I think this is more like hiring and firing people from the practice squad. You hire them and you and them know that it is just temporary. As for hiring them back in a few weeks, it's more like a few months (which for 40 employees would be over $50,000 a month they would be spending to keep excess employees around) since they usually only hire extra employees for major projects that need more employees.

There's a reason why Iwata's getting on the "We <3 third-parties" bandwagon.
And there is absolutely no reason for him to do it. It's like he's a father trying to get a kid (third parties) to behave with a lollipop (money hats).

I disagree.  Nintendo alone simply can not build and maintain momentum for two separate hardware platforms and two digital platforms all on its own, and it shows.  Leaving aside the matter that Nintendo's smaller in size than some third-parties, there's also the fact that Nintendo is simply not geared towards making some games which appeal to large segments of the population, so it's best for them to court third-parties to fill in both of these weaknesses.  There's zero point in cutting off one's nose to spite one's face.

But there is a point in cutting off a cyst, or some other abnormal growth on one's face. Which may be how Nintendo (quite rightly, in some cases) perceives third parties.

N64. Gamecube. And now with the Wii.

Yeah, I think they have a good case on how third parties treat them. only difference is that they have moneyhats, third parties are so-so in that area.
