Thanks, RAB! That means we've now hit the double digit sign-up mark.

Looks like we may be doing this Mafia thing again after all. But I'm still looking for at least 6 more players which means we are only 62.5% of the way there. I sort of mentioned on if we had a core group of 16 - 18 players then it would be easy to go ahead and do a bunch of games in a row. However, I should clarify that when I launched this thread, I had the number 16 in mind for the minimum amount of players to participate or I was going to call it off. I don't want to do a game with like 12 or 13. I know they've been done in the past but they've never seemed to turn out that great. There's something about the 16 mark. When a game hits at least that mark then the games seem to really take off. There's more action, more crazy momentum swings, more standout moments for players as new days seem to put new people in the spotlight. Anyways, I just sort of realized I should probably mention what my goal here is since we are now seeing the player list growing in size.

It suddenly occurs to me that if I do a Harvest Moon theme then I should have the game suddenly branch into two paths after a few days where one game is kind of subpar and the other game is better but now called Story of Seasons.

Yep, I'm thinking that's what could happen. With Metroid Dread and Mario Party Superstars next month, it's another reason why I want to wait a bit before purchasing Cruis'n Blast.

You know, I've never understood the internet hatred for that song. One of the nice things about the Kelvin Timeline movies; Discovery; and Picard shattering the Star Trek fanbase has been the critical reappraisal of Enterprise (and, to a lesser extent, Voyager), but people still bitch about that song.

Just to clarify, I'm not making fun of the song nor do I hate it. I've always been on the positive side of it. My comment was about how Insanolord's sentence basically sounded like the opening lyrics of the theme song which hilarious to me especially since he was referring to Enterprise when he made the comment.

I don't normally care that much about racing games. For instance, I've never cared about stuff like Ridge Racer or Gran Turismo. Usually just stick with Mario Kart and maybe something like F-Zero GX or Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed might catch my eye and give me a different racing addiction away from MK.

However, Cruis'n Blast is the first time in a long time where a trailer for a racing game got me hyped up. The more I've seen and heard about Cruis'n Blast the more it seems to keep matching that hype. While not quite an instant buy for me, it is something I do plan to purchase now a bit down the road. It's pretty rare for a racing game to be a wanted title for me but Blast has accomplished that.

Hmmm. It just occurred to me that maybe I should make the flag for the Luigi's Mansion theme the portrait of captured Mario or the portrait making machine.

NWR Mafia Games / Re: Future Mafia Games
« on: September 13, 2021, 02:40:39 AM »
Well, I was thinking about the rules and roles that I did last game with Metroid and was wondering where else I could apply them. I think it could work with a Luigi's Mansion theme. There would be two killers again which would be Luigi and Gooigi or E. Gadd. The mafia would be King Boo and Boo Buddies looking to establish themselves as rulers over the townies or ghosts like greenies, slammers, etc. There are treasures that the killers can pick up to make their vaccuums more powerful or give them more abilities. The only thing I can't quite come up with yet is what might be the flag or the equivalent to a metroid in my Metroid game.

In addition to Luigi's Mansion, I also thought that Mega Man might work with this ruleset with maybe Mega Man and Mega Man X or Zero as the killers. Not sure what the Mafia would be but it could be Dr. Light with Roll and others. Townies would be Robot Masters and Dr. Wily could be a role for the townies. Again, people would have abilities attached to them that Mega Man can get to make him more powerful in the game. Again, I'm just not sure what the flag might be for this theme but maybe I don't need to include that. Much like how Mega Man gets abilities from defeating the other robot masters, I feel this time of theme would work pretty good with the one established in Metroid.

Likewise, I also thought of Pikmin working for this theme. Olimar and Louie as the killers. Emperor Bulblax, Empress Bulblax and a couple others as the mafia with the townies being Pikmin. Olimer and Louie could be trying to get ship parts and treasures which make them more powerful as they use the Pikmin to accomplish this while the mafia is just trying to devour Pikmin and assert their natural dominance. Again can't really think of what might make for a good flag to capture. However, it also occurs to me that perhaps the Pikmin theme might be best used in a different way. Utilizing an idea from BeautifulShy perhaps Olimar and Louie are two Mafias that have to recruit their mafia from the other players and build it up much like you have to build up a Pikmin army. The Killer might just be something like a Grubdog or could still go higher up the food chain with Emperor Bulblax. That seems like it might be a bit more true to the theme of Pikmin.

Harvest Moon is another theme I think hasn't been done. My thinking is to use it more for a traditional Mafia theme but maybe more could be done with it. I was pondering whether it might be an idea to have everyone as a farmer trying to build up their farms for some advantage or abilities but haven't gone further on that concept. I'm kind of leaning towards doing Luigi's Mansion for this game but I might go with Harvest Moon if I just want to do something kind of simpler after not hosting a game for so long and sort of give everyone a game with less things to keep track of as a sort of warm-up if we do start playing more games regularly. I might include a role where a player has to "marry" another player of their choosing within a certain time frame. Then they would both be bonded for the rest of the game to try and add some more Harvest Moon personality into the game.

The other theme I'm thinking of but would likely be the 5th game of the ones I've thought of so far is Xenoblade Chronicles X. I do need to finish playing it for the full story so that I have a better handle with that for what I may do there. When I was going over ideas for themes and thought of this game, I also thought of my never realized Mafia RPG idea and feel maybe they could work with each other as players have an HP number assigned to them that can be lowered via voting or hits. Taking out players can get you money which you can use to buy things like armor or better weapons and maybe even a Mech suit to make you more powerful. However, gotta be careful to think how that could play out since the godfather or killer could possibly become too powerful if they can make a hit and get all the money a player is worth in addition through voting someone out making them too hard for the rest of the players too eliminate. It's kind of why I scrapped the RPG idea but I feel something maybe possible through the XCX theme.

I also introduced an idea years back of a Wii-Make with the idea of revisting past Mafia games and themes and if I were to host a bunch more games then there are a couple I'd like to revisit.

Perhaps the long break helped but I'm just getting really enthused on the prospect of actually hosting more more Mafia games. That said, it depends if we have enough people that miss playing it or want to play more of this game for awhile. Like if we can have a group of 16 - 20 players who are willing to play it regularly, I think I could pull off having a game every month for a year. Of course, if anyone else wanted to host a game during that time span then it would make it even easier for me to see us having a year of Mafia. When I say 16 - 20 players it allows for some players to take a break if they can't make a game because of life responsibilities and situations. But if a couple people sit out a game but a couple that sat out last game can make the next one then we can sort of ensure that we'd always have enough players to make a more lively game and knowing a certain minimum number will be available would also help make things easier when planning on what roles to have and how many.

Now I'm not expecting people signing up for this game need to feel they are being made to commit to playing a bunch more games in the future but I do wonder if there are players who feel they could so or would be able to make it for more games because they know what the schedule of them is in advance. Perhaps if you are a person who feels they'd be able to play in the majority of games then mention it in the Future Mafia Games thread and a list could be made there to see what a possible baseline would be for the expected minimum number of players in a game.

While I haven't selected a theme yet, I'm actually feeling my creative juices on this start to perk up again and have now realized 5 Mafia themes I could do that haven't been done yet. However, first I want to see if the player participation will be there before giving it too much thought. At the same time, I feel like posting in here my plans and themes for the next few games as to what I'm thinking of doing because I'm starting to feel hyped and want to get other people hyped as well.

Is there still demand for a Mafia game? Do the users who still check out this place once in awhile still feel like meeting up for another round? I guess we'll find out. Since I get the feeling that users may not check up on the forums as often as they once did (maybe once a week or so) I suppose it would be a good idea to let this sign-up thread run for a couple weeks meaning I'd likely launch the game for Sept. 27 although it could be sooner if it turns out this sign-up thread fills up quite quickly. So, let's test the water and see who would still be up for this. Sign up below in the thread if you are ready for any sort of Mafia action.

Sign-up List:

Mr. Bungle
Mop it up

11 Mafia Addicts have signed up so far.

I also thought about putting up a sign-up thread for a game when Sept. 1st rolled around after Backlaugust. Couldn't really think of a theme.  :-[ Thought about just doing the Metroid theme from last game again because I really liked the roles and abilities set up from that game with the added "capture the Metroid flag" element. Couldn't think of another theme that might fit in smoothly with those elements.

But what the heck? I'll throw up a sign-up thread for another game and see if the demand is actually there. I'm sure I can host something but I may just skip the story and theme part (and it's not like we haven't played games where I skipped on a lot of the story before  :P).

I guess we're going to stay one short of 30 (or 40 with Mop it up's playing of both sides). So close yet so far. Anyways, spent last weekend clearing up a couple things. Used a guide to quickly get the final pictures needed to complete the gallery in Jenny LeClue. I got 100% on the story mode for Rayman Raving Rabbids. There is the score mode but not worth it and it is broken anyways. Found out that Ubisoft programmed it so that you can't actually complete it or unlock all the bonuses. Such high quality Wii efforts from 3rd parties. Got a few outfits and videos to still unlock in Hello Kitty: Roller Rescue. Need to get an S rank on all the levels for one outfit. Might not normally bother with it but they don't seem to be that difficult to get since this is pretty much a game for young kids. :P  ;D  When Backlaugust ends then it is Sweep-up September as I try and wrap up a few objectives I set to the side in order to just beat a game.

However, the big one that didn't even count in Backlaugust is still Metroid Prime 3. Booted up MP3 Monday to try and finally finish it. First, you gotta go through a bunch of rooms on the planet Phaaze to get to the boss. Then I fought Dark Samus around 5 or 6 times and learned the patterns, took it down. Next up the Aurora Unit. Hadn't faced it in years and forgot it's patterns and attack. Ended up losing to it. Not a big deal, I figure. I'll just have to restart facing it and have good health again. Nope. I have to get through Dark Samus again.

Part of the difficulty in Hypermode is making you start over from the Dark Samus fight. Anyways, I do take down Dark Samus again. In fact, it felt easier. Then I take down the Aurora Unit but that's just it's first form. I then have to fight it's floating head and lose to that. Back to the Dark Samus fight.

At that point, my hands are starting to ache. Gripping the Wiimote and nunchuck too tight, I guess. Take a moment to stretch and give them a rest. Look up a video of the Head boss fight on YouTube to remind myself of what to do and what its attacks are. Unpause the game and go at it. Once again, take down Dark Samus. That boss no longer seems challenging. Not sure if the difficulty is lessoned on refacing it after beating it once but get through it again pretty quickly. Take my time with the Aurora Unit to get healing items from it that can be gained during the fight. Take it down. Back to the floating head. Have about 75% of my health still available. Pause to stretch my hands again. Go through its pattern of attacks in my head to be ready for when I get back at it. Resume game. Proceed to choke bad as I get hit constantly by a bunch of its attacks and lose again. Not today, I guess.

Shut off the game which I was hesitant to do since this will mean going through the planet Phaaze again. I think it had already been around two and a half hours and my hands were feeling it. (Don't really have that issue with most games. Last I can think of is MK7 on 3DS for longer sessions.) Heaven forbid a player could save just almost before the boss fight like the first two Prime games. So close to wrapping that thing up but thanks for making such a long three stage boss Retro! Great fun. Hate being right there at the bloody end and so close to ending it but having to redo things all over again. At least I've been making progress each time I've been playing it so I'm sure it's doable. I just hate the amount of time it's taking.

Back when I was making up this list of games, I had thought about Civilization 6 but passed on it since I found out there was a version called CIV 6 Anthology which was the complete package. It had all the DLC that had been released for the game along with the original base version. However, I only saw it listed for PC / Steam. Even with the sales the game and its DLC would get on the eShop, it would still be cheaper to get the Anthology version over all the other parts at their lowest price on sale. Plus, I've always played Civ on a computer and wasn't sure what it would be like having to use a controller instead of mouse and keyboard so I left it off my list.

However, I see that the eShop now does have the Anthology version and it is on sale for half off. A real humdinger of a deal. (This is why you wait to buy games to see if you can get a complete package down the road.) I'm really leaning towards getting it now but just wondering if there are any users out there who have it and what they might think of playing it on a console versus PC. Is there a control method that's more preferable? Do you wish you had got it for the Switch or PC depending on the version you own? Any feedback at all on the game that you'd want to make?

I'm one of those who does not remember or ever heard of this game.

However, after reviewing it, I'd like to make a suggestion for the main character. I've reviewed his travel plans and would recommend the following alternative path:

I think it would help save a lot of time, trouble and expense if he took the shortcut I've proposed.  ;)

Of course trying to beat R-Type 1 has caused me to finally change my sleep cycle to get more sleep at night since anything less then 8 hours and I can't even get halfway through since my reaction time is so dulled.  Hopefully if I can make myself physically healthier, I'll finally beat this game and will be able to beat other harder games a lot quicker as well.

Looks like Pokemon Sleep missed its opportunity and R-Type 1 has taken its place for helping gamers get the sleep they need. Thanks for nothing, Game Freak! Hope you have sweet dreams IN HELL, Pikachu!  >:(

I've added Luigi Dude and Broodwar's games to the list. (Although I'm actually not the one running this so I guess pokepal148 can still make the call of whether he thinks Broodwar's last entry of Tormented Souls counts.  :-\ )

One away from 30! (Although if we include Mop it up's ten games then we are 1 away from 40. This whole thing can be very confusing. :o )

You're right, I should have worded it as "first release" since re-releases are allowed. But it's too late, now it looks like backpedaling! Oops!

It's a good thing I'm even less of a stickler and say a person should be able to count any game and any version so long as they haven't played it yet before. So, if you bought a game in July or August 31 and beat it before the month was over, I say it can still count because you are keeping it out of your backlog instead of adding to it. Likewise, if a person beat Kirby's DreamLand 3 on their Super Nintendo years ago but then beat KDL3 for the first time in something like Kirby's 25th Anniversary Collection for Wii during August then I say that counts as well.  8)  Basically, I'm cool with you counting Quake for your month's totals if you want to. I just like to take the Waluigi Defense and claim that "everyone's cheating" if I'm not number one.  ;D

Perhaps you, RABicle, and me should form our own super team next year, just majorly crush all these schlubs. Maybe see if we can get Luigi Dude going again too, then we'd really be nigh unbeatable!

Hahaha, YES! We'll take on the whole internet and win!!!!

General Gaming / Re: Backlaugust 2021: Round 2: Electric Boogaloo
« on: September 01, 2021, 04:48:41 PM »
Wait, just a minute here!! There's something very suspicious about this list!

Myself, I'm lenient and pretty much accept anything that wasn't released / bought during August regardless of any other circumstance.

I was thinking about it, and perhaps I'll also count Quake as a completed game as well. Technically I've played a version of this game on the Nintendo 64, but I've never played the PC version, which is the newest release. We not only played the main game in co-op, but also the included expansions as well, though I won't be counting those as separate games. What a wild 'n crazy game, these classic shooters are certainly something else!
Scored: 9/10

The Quake Remaster/Rerelease just happened in the later half of August! Look how quickly the "rules" are abandoned when those in charge want to inflate their game count for the month. Oh, the humanity hypocrisy!  ;D  ;)

Congrats on reaching double digits and getting through ten games. Now that the month is over, I'm regretting that I let the opportunity to get to ten and double digits slip away myself. If I hadn't taken my time with Skyward Sword and a bunch of evenings where I didn't do any gaming in the first half of the month then I think can think of a few more titles I could have probably squeezed in time for. I got more serious about it over the last couple weeks and started wondering if I could pull off the feat of hitting that mark before Sept. 1 but I run out of time. If I didn't have the mindset of thinking I was only going to have one or two games for the month because of Zelda then maybe I wouldn't have been so lackadaisical during the first half of the month in my gaming. I shall remember this for next year.

Although for next year, maybe it should Negative World vs Nintendo World Report vs Pietriots because RAB and I are currently responsible for half the games beat this year and we were responsible for like 60% of last year's total. PIETRIOTS are the true MVP's of Backlaugust.  8)  ;)

If anyone else on the forums has some games they beat for August to add to the total then please try and post about them in the next couple days. By end of Friday, I'm moving on. Four games away from the 30 mark. You'd think we'd have had other users beat a game or two that they could get added to this list.

one franchise I really don't wanna see get a new game coming soon is those godforsaken Raving Rabbids....

Hate em, they, Assassin's Creed, & Just Dance killed our boy Rayman.

Kind of hard to say they killed Rayman when Rayman Origins and Legends did get released to critical acclaim while the Rabbids seemed to be running out of steam at the point. Slow sales for Rayman Legends seemed to have killed Rayman more than those other series. There was a Rabbids game at the launch of the Wii or close to it with Rabbids Land. Rayman Legends came out much later. I didn't think there was another Rabbids game until Mario + Rabbids but looking over the series on Wikipedia, I see there were some other games for mobile and XBox/PS. That said, I think most gamers had stopped caring about the Rabbids around the time Wii U launched and Rayman was gaining popularity again with Origins but the delays of Legends being released seemed to have killed some possible momentum for your boy.

Well, I do have a couple buzzer beaters to add to my total.

Hello Kitty Roller Rescue for GameCube has been beaten and Rayman Raving Rabbids for the Wii has also been beat. Not sure it was worth pushing myself to focus on this the past four days as I've let all kinds of things pile up now like dishes, laundry, harassing my internet provider to give me a better deal.

In a little bit of hilarity, I also booted up Super Bomberman R for Switch to see if I could possibly get it done tonight also. I started the game on August 31st last year and got through the first couple planets. Here I am returning to it a year later but I won't be able to get it done. Perhaps next year will finally be the time I can complete it. Too bad. Perhaps I should have gotten to it instead of Metroid Prime 3 this month.

Nothing to really report on the gaming front. I was wondering about any other titles I might be able to squeeze in to possibly top RABicle. On my Backloggery account, I had noted that I lost the save data file for Mario Kart: Double Dash. Having played a lot of that back in the 00 decade, I was thinking maybe I could quickly get through the Cups and add it to the list. When I booted up the game, I was amazed to find that I still had the save data after all. I was actually quite happy about that since there are few records set in the game from my brother and even some we set together as a team. It was one of the last games we still played regularly as he sort of drifted away from console gaming. That was a pleasant surprise. Even though I won't be able to count the game, I'm really happy about seeing I was wrong about losing the data.

I also decided to record my discovery of how to beat the Renegade CPU in Clubhouse Games. I thought it best to do it now while I still had the pattern memorized before I forgot it. I even turned the whole thing into a Pietriots article so that felt like a big accomplishment for the month as well. There's been a bunch of times I've thought about doing some article or topic for the site. Sometimes, I even started writing it up before running out of steam and not finishing it. Been a long time since I posted anything there so it felt good to do something to try and justify my existence as part of the team. That said, the whole thing probably ate up 2 - 3 hours which I could have used to try and get another game in.

I've started to turn completing Metroid Prime 3 as a bit of a saga for the month and I know I'm close to beating it. It would seem to be the logical choice to play and add to the list of games I've finished this month. However, I get the feeling it may take me a few hours to actually get through it and it feels like something better suited for a Saturday afternoon where I can spend the time needed to overcome that last challenge. Thus, I don't think it will happen in this month. With that off the table, not sure there's anything really left for me to tackle in time.
