I've been here since (checks) Tue March 29, 2005 10:11 PM. Well, at least that's my first post. I had periods where I went into lurk-mode for a month or two. That's why my posts per day are so low.

I would really like a new forum software. This message board has been awesome but at times it feels really simplistic. I really like the HCRealms boards where you can give people Rep points and such. And I think a message board that perhaps has built in means to play some forum games could be nice.

Anyway, at this point I would be happy with just a color swap. Gray is pretty boring.

I'm ok with this forum being simplistic. My biggest complaint is that the search feature could be way better. Also if something could help with the load times as well it be nice.

It's no mystery that we need new forum software and we've needed it for a long time. Believe me, I'm working on it. I'm testing phpbb in a secret location with the gracious hosting of a certain awesome pietriot. If we can get the features in that we want and can integrate it with the site well enough (ie newsbot), then we'll be good to go. (If you're a pietriot and know your way around customizing phpbb, I am interested in your cervixes.)

I want flashy colorful forums that will take a long time to load, but the pretty of it will make up for the slowness in loading.

I don't mind the boring grey at all. In fact, if you change it, please use forum software that lets me customize its appearance. Boring is better than eye-bleedingly garish or low contrast, like all the "cool" sites.

So this is in the funhouse...what is the likelihood we actually have the chance to get new forum software?

If it is money thing, the NWR staff should ask for donations that will directly go to forum software, and hey the more money raised the better software we can get...it would be like a week long Forum software drive.

Insolent fool! Don't you know that all power on this site comes from the Funhouse? Anything that happens on this site, happens because the Funhouse lets it happen.

Of course, it's understandable that one might not know this since the Funhouse keeps it's power hidden. But to question the power of the Funhouse? You'd better pray that you don't get banned. Or worse yet, have your title changed.

phpBB is a great forum software and it's free

if you have the money to spend though, vBulletin is one of the best alternatives out there...

Alright, I spent a bit of time looking over the various phpBB mods available and comparing them to the current NWR forum functionality and the suggestions in the NWR Discussion forum.

The search mods available seem to be geared towards making things simpler rather than powerful. What would you add to the current NWR search functionality?

Personally I loathe these. Waste of bandwidth no matter how fast loading or non-annoying they are. But there are mods around that allow you to show/hide avatars and signatures.

I don't see this as being particularly feasible. phpBB works on themes set by the administration and these have to be stored on the server. Some mods allow users to choose different themes but having one different theme per user just isn't possible.

phpBB does this out-of-the-box. There's probably a mod available to emphasize this ability as well rather than a small icon by default.

Search Options that would be nice to have:

1)Search for Authors of Posts
2)Be able to select Author and Keywords of Posts
3)Be able to search only in the current thread you are viewing.
4)Be able to select which exact forum ie: funhouse, General Topic, Nintendo Console Gaming for posts
5)Search Titles
6)Able to refine search results to find more specific entries.

Other options that would be nice.

1)Banning people only from certain threads. (This would be a great tool for Mafia games.)

Not sure that phpBB can be that fine-grain with access. I'll look into it.
