Rev Specs sheet and format info
« on: June 13, 2005, 08:04:38 AM »
Before I begin I would like to say that most of these are based on other rumors that I have heard and in fact may in up not being at all true.

Rev Specs

Cpu:

2 G5 3 Ghz Dual Core
Total Cpu peak - 12 Ghz
Cpu average - 9 to 10 Ghz
1mb cache per cpu
1200 Mhz Front Side Bus
Cpu has multiplier of 2.5
128 Mb 1t Sram memory to serve as L3 cache to Cpu and Gpu

Graphics Card:

Based on Ati R520
700 Mhz
Total performance is 3 times more than that of Radeon X800 XT
14 Mb embedded 1T SRAM to serve as a buffer
Up to 32 pipes
256 mb GDDR4 Ram at 1.4 Ghz

System Memory:
256 Mb DDR2 Ram at 533 Mhz

Extra Stuff:

HDTV 1080p support
7.1 Digital Surround Sound powered by a separate chip to limit cpu usage
PPU

Disk Format:

DVD 6Gb Dual layer and Bluray or Hd-dvd

The Disk format is interesting for they could go with any format. Let me explain. See Nintendo is partners with companies that are making both bluray and hd-dvd. There partners include Nec for Hd-dvd and Panasonic for bluray. If they want to win the format war they must get nintendo on there side utalizing there tech. We already know that Ps3 will use bluray and xbox 360 said if they are going to use a next gen format it would be Hd-dvd which leaves one console left Nintendo.

Total Cpu peak - 12 Ghz
Cpu average - 9 to 10 Ghz

What kind of scale is this? You cannot add clock frequencies and claim that means anything. A 10 GHz CPU would vaporize itself the moment you power it up and I'm not too sure if 3 GHz is even in the possible range for the "G5" line (It's PPC970, G5 is just the name Apple sells them under!). The Rev is meant to be an affordable system, i.e. NO PPC970 QUADCORE. PPC970s are expensive and have features your console won't ever need (note to Microsoft: out of order execution is none of them). Four of them are even more expensive. At 3 GHz they'd be f###ing hot, a G5 consumes huge amounts of power already, 3GHz would be a huge increase in power usage. Four of them would need a new powerplant. Don't come with the XBox excuse ("but Microsoft has 3GHz G5s too!"), the X360 does NOT use PPC970s, it uses a chip apparently named PPE that's a severely stripped-down (so much that it has a huge performance impact) version of the PPC970 and meant for embedded devices (such as consoles). The PPE is also the multipurpose core of the Cell.

BTW, there s no "DVD 6GB Dual Layer", DVD Dual Layer is 9GB. The X360 was confirmed to use DVD-9 (the dual layer DVDs), no HD format to be found.

www.gamesindustry.biz  has another leaked set of Revolution specs.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=9485
You can check that out if you want, but I'm pretty sure that they aren't real either.  Unless something with some credibility comes out, we're better off waiting for Nov/Dec when Nintendo makes official announcements regarding hardware, controllers, software, online details, DVD playback and DS support.  And anything else they have hidden up their sleeves.

Excerpts from Matt Casamassina's mailbag; Wednesday, July 13

"...the Big N seems to think that advanced technology is sometimes an unnecessary distraction when it comes to game development. Revolution is customized to this philosophy. We know that it will absolutely not be as powerful as Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3..."

Professional Journalism at its finest! Who said assuming major details was a bad thing?

and

"Reggie's comments seem to indicate that Revolution's new controller will be able to adequately play all the games from these different generation Nintendo systems."

then the next day; Thursday July 14, when asked if Rev controller would be incompatible with GCN games

"Yes, and this is why Revolution features what I lovingly dub the GameCube docking station: an area on one side with four GameCube controller ports and two GCN Memory Pak slots. "
"I used to sell furniture for a living. The trouble was, it was my own."

He use the word 'these' in that second comment, because the question was regarding NES, SNES and N64.

The N64 controller and the GC controller aren't that far apart when it comes to functionality, the difference is exactly one analog stick.

IGN seems to have become sloppy with adding in personal opinion and speculation into there mailbag, editorials and sometimes News.

Now two of those is perfectly ok to add in your personal opinions and speculations WHEN you announce it as such and not as news.  Too bad that is not what IGN does.

Nintendo has not said it will be vastly underpowered.  It has stated it is trying to make an affordable GAMING SYSTEM.  They are cutting things like HD support to keep the price down.

If Matt has rumored or leaked information from another source mention that in the statement.

Exactly, and Reggie said that it would work on the Rev controller
