Mario 64 as a pack-in title?
« on: June 08, 2005, 08:30:40 AM »
According to Cheapassgamer, its sounds like we're going to see Nintendo DS come bundled with Mario 64 at a lot of places, perhaps as soon as next week.

So all you people that are looking to get a DS in preparation for the shockingly good lineup for the second half of this year, you might want to hold out for another week.

It figures that they would pack-in the port.  Super Mario 64 on the N64 sold a lot of copies.  It would be fair to assume then that maybe some people would want a different pack-in.  I'd rather have a price drop than a free copy of a game I have no intention of buying at all.

Personally I think Polarium would the ideal pack-in title since it hasn't gotten much exposure and it's a puzzle game so it fits the image of a portable pack-in.  Mario 64 will probably continue to sell so it doesn't need the extra exposure.

Ian, gotta disagree with you about having Polarium as a pack-in.  Nintendo would probably want to showcase the graphical prowess of the DS just a little bit more than what Polarium shows.  In addition, i think that Polarium is kind of a niche game whereas the vast majority of everyone loves Mario.  People will say, "woopy do, the DS comes with some weird crappy looking puzzle game I've never heard of" versus "Wow, Mario comes with the DS now, I loved that game for N64 and wait, it has MORE stars AND mini-games AND wireless multi-player?  Wow, the DS is great!"

Okay, so maybe a little far-fetched, but I think you get the idea.  Mario sells systems.  Polarium doesn't.

Hmm, maybe I should wait and see if they pack NEW Super Mario Bros in with the system.

supposedly EBGames has already been doing this pack in since monday. But most likely only in-store cause I didn't see the deal online.

Mario 64 DS is worth it just for the mini-games. I see the main adventure as the extra, not the mini games.
Wow! I just thought of a great idea! They should pack in the mini games alone! But yeah, they need to show off the graphics of the DS a little bit too. I think Hunters is still a good pack-in. This is the best mainstream touchscreen use game there is.

Hunters is the best pack in since it's a great way to show off the DS.  You've got great graphics, intuitive touch-screen control, and lag-free wireless multiplayer.  They should keep the demo.

The following takes place in an alternate universe:

jasonditz: According to *website*, Nintendo is announcing Polarium as a pack-in title for the DS. Maybe this will give you people thinking about buying a DS another reason.

Ian: It figures Nintendo would do something like this. Rather than packing in an epic title that shows off the DS capabilities, they pack in a puzzle title that no one was buying anyhow. This is just another example of Nintendo betraying the hardcore fans.

GamesAreFun.com reports that EB Games and Best Buy have both confirmed they will participate in this deal starting next week.

I've heard that this bundle still includes the MP: Hunters demo. I wonder if all this free gameage (as Pauly Shore might say) might cause a dip in software sales.

Its official

EBGames.com

but I see no mention of a MP:H pack-in......, so unless they are giving you a copy of M64 off the shelf I don't see them packing-in the demo also

I'd agree with you except the full game is almost out, and people should buy that. Hell, i'm not even buying it and I got the demo ages ago, the demo will do me, then again I know people who love the demo so much they want MORE, the full game has lots of potential sales, but i'm not that big of a fan of it. I'd buy the full game if I was rich.

In PC land the demo is there to convince undecided people, not to serve as a substitute until the full version arrives.

If this deal was also available here in Canada...*me sad*. I went to my local EB and the conclusion I got is that at the moment Canadians aren't getting the deal.

Well the MP:Hunters demo had to go sometime. As the game nears release the demo becomes obsolete. It was meant to give you something to look foward to and by stopping it now makes it possible to have all of the demo(e)s gone because who would want them when the full game is out?

Uh, Caliban, I don't know where you got that from, but it's definitely in Canada. Why, I saw one just a few days ago in Superstore. Actually, it's even better than this deal. Look at your Superstore flyer; you get the blue DS system with the choice of either Super Mario 64, Yoshi Touch & Go, or Pokemon Dash

Superstore? I've never heard of it I think, well actually I have a very vague memory that I've seen it here in Toronto, anyway I'll check into it. Thanks for tip, IceCold.

Edit: Found it, YAY! I just went on Google.ca and checked if they had site, fortunately they had so I just checked Weekly Flyer. The thing is I don't want the new colour. Damn, I got to find out if they make offer for normal DS's too.

I think it said "Now Available" for the Blue colour but I think the silver is still an option

EDIT: Found two addresses for Toronto ones:

51 Gerry Fitzgerald Dr
825 Don Mills Rd

If they don't have the silver one, I believe Zellers, CompuSmart, Futureshop or Toys R Us should have it, but I may be wrong

Yeah I checked those adresses too. I know for now that Zellers, Futureshop, Toys R Us, and CompuSmart don't have that deal. However, how can Compusmart have them at $149.99 CAD? with instant rebate I might add: http://www.compusmart.com/Product/Default.aspx?SupplierPartNo=956900 . I'm definitely getting one from CompuSmart, first thing tomorrow morning I do.

Yea - I had seen that deal before; too bad I already had a DS - it's a great offer for everyone. However, I think that they ship only within Canada. I love the CompuSmart site; I got MP2 for $39.99 CAD when it first came out there!

And I'm pretty sure that this week all of the major CDN stores will start carrying this offer.

TVman: The point of that demo would be that any DS buyer would immediately know about the game and whether he likes it. That's the point of a demo, not show "hey, some years into the future you'll play the full version" but "hey, look at this demo! Like it? You can buy the full version in stores to have even more fun!". Obviously you'd replace the demo with one for a newer game after Prime Hunters has been out for a while but not before that.
