Zelda Vs. Xbox 360 Commercial
« on: June 08, 2005, 04:11:38 AM »
Okay, we know that Twilight Princess will be release at roughly the same time as the Xbox 360. I was thinking of a cool idea that Nintendo could take advantage of that...

The commercial opens in a generic game store, with some poor gaming shlub (I'm thinking the awesome cashier guy from the "Free Demo" and Zelda Promo Disc commercials) looking at a shelf. On one end is an Xbox 360 with a $300 price tag, and on the other end is a GameCube with a copy of Twilight Princess leaning against it with a $150 price tag. As the camera cuts to the guy's confused face, a voice over says "For half the price of an Xbox 360, you could buy a Gamecube and the new Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess." It then cuts to some snippets of gameplay as the announcer describes the game. It then ends with the gamer happily leaving the store with the Gamecube in one hand and Zelda in the other.

Any other ideas?

The Gamecube should only be $50 if you purchase Twilight Princess at the same time.  I don't believe that they have to even acknowledge that the 360 exists  when Zelda comes out. Just let the product speak for itself with a movie-esq epic trailer and Official Theme Song by ColdPlay or whoever they decide is cool, hip and yet tasteful and not so mainstream um... nevermind my ramblings. Zelda Get!!!

I want them to just do the commercial with the same Conan the Barbarian music, it just fits perfectly.

Maybe there could be a screen in the store playing Zelda footage and the guy looks up at it with an awe-struck face and walks out with a GC and Zeruda. I think the special edition/pre-order bonus might be a highlight though, whatever they end up doing with that. I don't think they should advertise the competitions products though.

Hopefully Nintendo will think of something better!

They should show the E3 trailer in cinemas.

I don't know how effective it would be to compare the Gamecube to the next gen.  Of course the Cube is cheaper.  It's old.  It BETTER cost a lot less than an Xbox 360.  As great as Zelda looks I think with a lot of people if the choice was an old console that was never that popular to begin with or a brand new console, they would choose the new console.

I think the commercial should be incredibly simple.  Just show an up to date trailer for the game.  Zelda just looks so good that it speaks for itself.  This isn't the days of the NES.  Games look really good now and they're worth showing off.  Everyone who has seen a trailer for Twilight Princess has been blown away.  Remember that feeling when you saw the first trailer at E3 2004?  That's the feeling that the commercial should give the general public.

Though I would suggest less emphasis on the "Princess" part of the title in the ad.  It sounds a little girly.

Right, but the Cube not only costs a lot less than the allegedly next gen Xbox 360, its also cheaper than the other systems in its own generation.

I don't know what it costs them to make a Cube these days, but if its at all financially possible, I'd love to see them drop a special Cube/Zelda:TP/Zelda:WW/memory card bundle for $99 at Walmart the day after Thanksgiving. Maybe drop the standalone system to $79 or $69 too.

They're doing the same thing with MP2 bundles at Target right now, and to be honest its got me seriously thinking about buying a second cube for the other room.

The parent looking for a great present for their child sees an Xbox 360 with NO games for $300 and compares it to the decidedly more kid-friendly Cube sitting right next to it for $99 with a title or two.

And that's the trailer i'd put on the ad. The whole 'Blades will bleed ...' stuff would really influence people as there are some fantastic sequences in that trailer.

EDIT: I've shown 3 non-GC owning people (who all own xbox's but used to own 64's ) that trailer and each of them is planning to buy a Cube just for Zelda.

I really hope they do drop the price of the Gamecube when Zelda drops. I just found a way to hook my Cube up to my iMac, so I need  one for the living room and one for the studio. I can finally have all things entertainment within one central hub. And I believe the GameCube will look better on my iMac17"wide(S-Video) than on my regular 27"(Component Cables).

This should be the most hyped game in the History of Nintendo so that alone should give it some sell. Maybe they'll do some midnight madness sale at the Nintendo World Store that I can crash and get some good swag.

they need to show some freaking gameplay! Not a commercial that just has some weird thing with a tagline like the MP2: Echoes commercial. It had what, like 2 seconds of footage from the game? Also, they need to start putting stuff like "voted game of the year by ___" or something like that in there commercials. It gives some credibility in commercials and shows that they aren't just trying to get you to buy their game on no basis.

EDIT: I'm just glad that they got rid of the furry costume commercials. The only good commercial with that was the original Super Smash's comercial. I love that one, its a classic.

They should make the Mario 128 commercial include the line "do the Mario!"...

But yes, I agree. I paassed on Link's Awakening back then because the ads just showed a bunch of people dancing and I had no f###ing clue what the game was about. Or what it even looked like.

They should have Elijah Wood AND the kid from Harry Potter playing the game together and talking about how awesome it is. Maybe one of them can rap, like in the original Legend of Zelda commercial.  "WOAH, look at those graphics!"

Seriously, I agree with lots of game footage.  The graphics are impressive, and everyone who wanted a realistic Zelda needs to see them.

I think maybe they should re-use an old retro commercial and replace anything that actually refers to the older game...................................

or maybe they should save that for the Revolution marketing

At first when I read the part about a pop song in a Zelda commercial, I was like, "no."  But then I started thinking up a funny who are you commercial for it and I think Cindy Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun could be on one commercial.  There is a line that says something like, "some guys take a beautiful girl, and lock her away from the rest of the world."  I'm thinking something Monty Python silly like the old Japanese Zelda commercial.

One commercial could have System of a Down's Zelda song.

I was thinking of another commercial with some guy riding towards the camera in the distance on a horse.  It cuts to some girl eating some finger food on a bench.  It cuts to the guy on the horse, he doesn't seem to have gone very much further.  It cuts back to the girl on the bench.  It cuts back to the man on the horse, he still is in the distance; like a scene from The Holy Grail.  It cuts back to the girl, she notices the man on the horse; it shows the man on the horse.  It cuts back to the girl she looks intently toward the man on the horse, they show the man on the horse again; he is still in the distance.  The camera cuts back to the girl, she becomes disinterested looking back down at her snack when sudenly a some guy decked out in clanking steel armor runs up out of nowhere and steels her purse.  But then the guy on the horse shoots through the set once again like a Monty Python movie, effectivly sacking the man in armor.  It is all supposed to seem absolutely absurd.  Then the who are you slogan comes up followed by the plug for the game.

Another one I was thinking could be a werewolf commercial.  There are an infinite number of ways to do that in a funny way.

Most likely they will go with gameplay footage with classical music for this game's commercial though.

ew, no, no funny things in the commercial, I prefer to limit Zelda humor to being in-game, in the commercial it would be simply horrible.

And I read somewhere that the "famous" system of a down Zelda theme is in fact, not from the group, but from this random guy from the eighties, I whish I could find the link though.

If nintendo does do zelda vs. 360 ad than I want two.

The 1st is a guy in a store buy a 360 than it cut to the 1st e3 04 vid of a guy riding a horse than the guy walk out of the store tha it cut back and the you see that it is link than a guy that look like link a ride up in a horse to the guy and 360, he run but it to late and link cut off his head and than reggie says don't buy a 360 buy a cube. end.

The 2nd is, it's night a guy walking home form buying a 360 cut to e3 05 vid of link truning into a wolf than a real wolf come up to the guy and kill him a rips off his head, arm and leg a eat them than it cut to reggie. end.

I seen the loz1 ad and it was the geekest and nerdy thing I have ever seen more geeky than star war, dd, pokemon, mmorpg, star trak, cosplayer, and comic book all togeter!

Check this out.  It would appeal to the crowd who though Cel-da was teh kid-die.

A long line at the DMV, with various people of many varieties standing in line.  Old woman, young punk with alot of metal in his face, a soccer mom, a cowboy, and then Link, in full battle regalia, shield, sword and everything, standing there tapping his foot, looking at the clock on the wall.

Voice over: "The worst part about growing up are the responsibilities that come with age."

Cut to game footage, Link charging the boar cheiftan on the bridge, fighting on horseback, a few creatures being slain.

Commercial then cuts to Link riding a horse out of the parking lot of the DMV, with a license plate on the horses rear that says "WHUARU"

Voice over: "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Only for Nintendo Gamecube."
