There needs to be more games like Zelda, the closest we got was prince of persia. Okami is supposed to be good...more action/rpg!!!

ICO is like one giant Zelda dungeon. Shadow of the Colossus is like one giant Zelda overworld with no dungeons. Buy both and you'll be somewhat close to a Zelda game. Beyond Good and Evil is Zelda-esque, with stealth. And hovercraft racing.

But yeah, I agree, there should more games that rip off Zelda. And Metroid. As long as they do it well.

Did anyone play Sphynx?  I heard it was similar too, but I never played it.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Usually a really killer game has at least one "competitor" that is of approximately equal quality.  Virtua Fighter has Tekken, Metroid has Castlevania, etc.  Zelda is odd in that I have never played a Zelda style game that I thought was even close to as good as the real thing.  I think Metroid is better than Castlevania but Castlevania is still REALLY good.  It satisfies the cravings between Metroid games.  But Zelda doesn't seem to have anything.  I've played games like Illusion of Gaia and Secret of Mana on the SNES and while they're okay they seem to be missing something intangible that makes Zelda special.  For 3D games though Star Fox Adventures is the only Zelda clone I've played.

I think I just like Zelda so much that when other companies add or remove things to make their Zelda clone unique I don't care for the changes.  Often they're adding RPG stuff like leveling up and such.  I suppose if I somehow ever made a commercial videogame a good idea might be to make a Zelda clone that actually holds up to the original.  Release that on both the Wii and the competing consoles that have no Zelda and CHING CHING.

I have Sphinx. It's like Zelda... but it's world is split up into more distinct "levels" that seem more cramped and less expansive. It plays more like an action/platformer than an action adventure. And the story, while quite a good effort, isn't really very epic, skewing slightly younger and simpler.

Sphinx is actually a VERY well put together game. It just lacks... magic.

BTW, could we call Prince of Persia a near-Zelda title?

I really liked Soul Blazer.  I'd say it was fairly Zelda-like.  I liked the feel of sword fighting in that game.

Apparently Okami is really good, Prince of Persia counts to me because it has the three things that make Zelda good
Story/Combat/Puzzles

I played Sphynx and thought it sucked, it didn't miss magic per-se, it missed presentation and coherence.

I thought star fox adventures was pretty good despite some short-comings, had there been 10 games on cube like that it would have been perfect. Even if the games are not perfect, the thing I like about these are gameplay. For instance, i really liked playing Fable.

More Zelda clones/ripp offs!!!

Maybe i'm being controversial in suggesting that maybe there is no "zelda like competitor" because nintendo nailed it so perfectly (and nearly everytime) that everything else that is supposed to even come close, regardless of whether it's a good game or not, simply doesn't? Almost as if when it comes to this type of genre, zelda gets rose tinted glasses and everything else smacks with reality?

Or maybe developers don't try at all knowing the inevitable zelda comparisons that come of it?

You should try Cave Story.  It's a freeware PC game. Not really too much like any other game I've played, but I'd put it in the same category as Metroid, adventure/platformer/shooter.

resident evil has always had some action rpg-ness

basically

RE4  --     / -- Zelda
inventory      --    /      --   inventory
cloaked Salesman   /  -- cloaked salesman
melee --             /      --     melee
ranged weopons -- /   --   ranged weopons
money      --          /   --      money
story         --         /   --      story
Ganados --/--Talon and Ingo

if you look at the games, they are really not that different. Its just re4 doesnt have an overworld nor a sword...everythign else takes a page from zelda

While what you listed is similar, the games are quite different. RE4 is linear, the few puzzles it has are weak, it's just shooting as opposed to different items, exploring is done by looking around the area and waiting for the A button to flash up, and there are no NPCs. Those are just a few differences.. they're both fun, though.

I find Metroid to be more similar to Zelda than some of the other games that have been listed in this thread.

A mostly non-linear, open world, with new areas opened up with new items. Energy Tank/heart upgrade. Killing baddies may give you some life or ammo.  The bosses can be very similar.

Even the 3D Mario games are similar in that they have large, open levels with ability upgrades.

while zelda is very non linear, ultimately it is linear. If more games could provide things to do while doing other things that would be great. Take Shenmue, I love Shenmue, while i doubt things will go well for the franchise, it had some very Zelda-esque stuff.
