Podcast Discussion / Re: Best of the Wii: Xenoblade Chronicles

This would be number 1 for me too, I clocked in easily over 100 hours doing absolutely everything.

I would play this game, and when I thought it was time to stop I would look at my clock and think Wow that didn't feel like 6 hours. It goes to show just how much fun I was having and I can't remember another game where I felt like that in this generation or last generation.

There were so many great things about this game I can't even list them all. All of the elements in this game where made to such an outstanding level that when it all came together it was greater than the sum of its parts.

I posted this in another thread:

Nintendo has to deal with a lot of stuff being both a publisher and a console manufacturer. If you live in the UK and went inside a GAME store did you ever notice how Nintendo products are always near the back of the store or some hidden away corner?

This is because Nintendo refuses to pay GAME for "premium" space, they have a weird antagonistic business relationship with each other. When GAME were starting to go bankrupt Nintendo were the first to refuse them stock of new games because they knew GAME wouldn't be able to pay for them at a later date, then Capcom did the same.

Here's how I imagine it

Nintendo: We're launching a new console and I was thinking if we could make a deal, I'll pay you x amount of money and for x amount of time you give preferential treatment by helping advertise the Wii U on your website.
Amazon: Everyones products get equal treatment, I'm sorry we can't cut a deal
Nintendo: So we can't work anything out? At all?
Amazon: Nope
Nintendo: Well if you're not going to help me sell the Wii U then you're not going to sell any of my stuff. NEVER EVER EVER!! and your website sucks because its trying to recommend me anger management books when I obviously don't need them

Very strong showing for 3DS.

I have a feeling Capcom is going to see how well Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is going to sell in the west before deciding to release Monster Hunter 4. I predict we may see it 6 months to a year after the Japanese get it, worse case scenario we never get it.

I'm also interested in EX Troopers, Capcom's anime styled take on the Lost Planet universe. Bravely Default Flying, could use a change in title but I was very amazed by the graphics I've seen so far.

They are designed to be played with people in the same room. Its not like Nintendo can't do online play, they've done it before with Mario Kart. You can't show off asynchronous if its online.

I for one never expected Nintendo Land to be online. Ever.

This talk of the 3DO is kind of interesting too. I think today's equivalent of the 3DO may just be the Ouya. You may eventually have to scroll through a ton of crap to find the real gems.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U "Chat" and Online
« on: September 19, 2012, 01:25:01 PM »
To be honest I don't fully understand it either. As far as I can tell Nintendo are trying out some kind of social networking experience.

Whatever they are doing its brand new to console gaming so I get why its hard to understand. Xbox Live has been trying to slip some social networking in to its service but its really something that's just tagged on rather than being fully integrated. With the amount of hostility I get over Xbox Live I'm not sure if I even want a social experience on their platform.

I think Nintendo has the right idea where they moderate all public messages. I'm also hoping they have tighter reigns on communications between users, no one likes receiving a message that says 'your a f*g' for winning a game.

Its going to be interesting to see how Microsoft tops this because Nintendo will be offering everything Microsoft offers and more and for free. If the Wii U catches on then Microsoft will either have to remove the subscription fee for Xbox Live Gold or offer something even better to justify the fee. Don't forget to even use the those video streaming services you have to be on Xbox Live gold despite having already paid for the streaming. Also Nintendo doesn't make you look at advertisement.

I may end up getting a PSFour down the line.

I'm not sure if Sony has the financial power they once did. Remember a while back when they had to layoff a bunch of people. Their TGS showing wasn't exactly great and Vita support looks down right depressing. It almost feels like Sony as a video game contender is starting to die out.

Well because its Tekken Tag the game needs to hold 4 characters in memory. You just won't see the same level of detail and fidelity as Soul Calibur. Of course if this was a Wii U exclusive and built form the ground up for Wii U then they could have taken advantage of the extra memory.

But with that being said, I think we all know Reggie is just a corporate shill

Who are ya, Bill Hicks? The guy works for Nintendo, no need for name calling. He's not Jay Leno advertising Doritos. What would anyone say if presented with critism for the company they work for, what are they going to say knowing full well their boss is watching?

Reggie is the voice for Nintendo of America and NoA is not autonomous, its a branch of Nintendo Japan. Part of his job is to reiterate Japan's message to the west.

If the Xbox420 rumor of having 8GB of RAM is true it shows the 2GB Wii U has only 1/4th the power. I know people say graphics have hit a wall and no longer matter, but other game related things do matter like physics, AI, and so forth. A developer who designs a game for the PS420 which takes full advantage of their specs will be able to make a Wii U version

I would think AI and physics to be something CPU related. AI has only become a problem when for me on games like Supreme Commander where the game is trying to simulate the behaviour of hundreds of independant units at once, not to be confused with Total War where what looks to be like 100 units are actually a single entity. Also physics look like they only really matter if it impacts gameplay as in the case with CellFactor: Revolution and Battlefield 3. Even the 360 could handle the natural destruction in BF3.

I think 8GB RAM is a little overkill (2 or 3 sounds more conservative) at least if its only reserved for games. Reason for this is because you have to account for the load time on disc (if Sony and MS use discs that is) The Wii U will have 21MB/s read speed, spread that over 1GB and it takes up to 48 seconds to read 1GB from the disc in to memory, though I seriously doubt you'd need a full 1GB to get a game up and running this is just an example.

Consoles just don't have the luxury of loading everything from the hard disk like a PC does.

The whole point of the screen, gyros, camera, microphone on the Wii U pad is that Nintendo are once again trying to differentiate themselves from the competition. They are essentially trying to get developers to dedicate their game to Nintendo's platform, to take full advantage of the Wii U pad. So that a game built for the Wii U from the ground up could not be playable on any other console. Whether this plan will work out remains to be seen.

I'm still very skeptical of next-gen and after reading this Penny Arcade Report it only reinforces my skeptism. Too long to read? AAA games very expensive, cant risk innovation, very high bar for success, failure = find new job.

I generally think its a really bad idea to have too many day 1 games for any console launch. Its not bad for the gamers like us, its just really bad for the developers if no one buys their games. With all the studio closures that have been going on its better launch on a date with significant rivals.

I do wonder if Nintendo will continue with the friend codes thing., because I think there's a good reason to continue like that. Now I know from the way they've done things so far is they don't want people to be limited to a single permanent username.

Like for example if you normally call your self MrBubbles online but someone has already chosen that username then you have to pick something else like MrBubbles1 or xXMrBubblesXx. What Nintendo does is assign you a single friend code and you share that with all your friends and you can change the name that is displayed to everyone as often as you like.

So what happens when more than one person who calls themselves MrBubbles are in the same game? I would imagine it would look like this MrBubbles, MrBubbles(1), MrBubbles(2)

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo supports free-to-play model
« on: September 18, 2012, 12:35:12 PM »
I was a little interested about this when I heard it. I've played a few F2P games on PC, most of them being trash because I hate being nudged/pushed in to paying. I have paid money in to these games but only in ones that don't have a pay-to-win element like Tribes: Ascend and Gotham City Imposters.

Here's the quote from Satoru Iwata:
"And because of that, we have prepared a Digital Rights Management system. We have designed the system from a technical standpoint to allow developers to freely take advantage of things like free-to-play and microtransactions."

Up until recently Ghost Recon Online which is currently playable on PC was due for a Wii U release too. Ubisoft however shifted all focus to the PC version because frankly it was severely lacking in content. Only 4 maps and 2 game modes! Its a good game by the way just really slow progression, but tactical team play is king.

I find this interesting because with the Wii U pad even PC games could be accomodated for. We could see the likes of Guild Wars 2 and Team Fortress 2 on there. It would certainly be easier selecting which disguise for the spy to use on a touch screen than with a keyboard/controller.

I don't fully agree that it will be outdated.

Has everyone seen the Samaritan demo from Epic games?

This is what next gen is supposed to look like right?

If this is what you expect the next Xbox and PlayStation will achieve. Well I got bad news for you. This demo was at GDC 2011 running on graphics cards that even by todays prices would cost up to $1100 (£700) There is no way Microsoft or Sony could put something that expensive in their next console, no one could afford it.

I've practically got next-gen console hardware sitting in my computer, my graphics card cost me $400 (£250) 4 months ago and it's really not that impressive because for the last 4-5 years graphics technology has stagnated. Sure we're seeing bigger and better numbers from Nvidia and ATI but what we're actually seeing with our eyes are tiny improvements that you wouldn't actually notice unless someone pointed it out to you.

Microsoft's and Sony's next gen will be the difference between the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5.

In what I predict in next gen will be a slight bump in graphics, probably equivalent to the Star Wars demo at E3. We'll be seeing games rendered at 1080p resolution but mainly more of the same stuff we've been seeing from this generation.

The most significant  factor for consoles to stand apart from each other are what people refer to as gimmicks. I think every platform will have its own motion-like control style.

It's not so much that the Sun slams Wii U, but in an editorial, an author gives his opinion.
That's why The Sun is so terrible. They always give their opinion. Always.

Can't really blame the guys for their generic answers. They obviously can't steal the thunder away from the PS3 and 360 versions and are probably under orders to reveal only limited information about the game.
