Anyone who can't put forththe almost non existant effort needed to get into E3 legitimatly should just be banned from going.

« on: March 24, 2004, 06:27:35 PM »
I've been playing the PC version for about 4 months.  I did go ahead and pick up the PS2 version.

Here's a quick pro/con .

PS2:

Cheaper Version
Play on TV
Does Not Lock Out Computer
Game is more expensive

PC:

More Expensive If You Need Hardware
Easy Keyboard and Controller Support
Game Is Cheaper
PC Locked - (When playing FFXI, you can not get back to windows or minimize the game without logging out, if you do it will force log you out, this was done to prevent cheating).

NOTE:  This lock out reason is why I got the PS2 version, so when I want to I can play the PS2 version and still be able to acess stuff on my PC.  Anyone else thinking of getting both, I do have to congratulate Square, using existing PC account on the PS2 version was very very easy to do.

The BIGGEST difference in the two is graphics, and it is a BIG difference.

The PS2 version, to be blunt, looks horrible.  The lowest settings on the PC look a little better.  In video's you see names above characters and enemies, in the PS2 version, they are there, but you CAN NOT read them unless you select them, and see the name in the corner of the screen, or you get very very close to them.  It's sad because if you do have a PC that can max out FFXI, you are presented with an absolutly beautiful game.

You can use a keybaord to play FFXI on PC.  It very easily supports a gamepad, it's set up to work almost identical to how PS2's will be used, though with the PC you can change everything to fit your preference.

And instead, they call us "kiddie" and say we have outragous ideas, which Sony and MS soon copy. The fanboys then call Sony and/or MS's "idea" great and unique. Grrrr..........

Analog Stick = PC first
Rumble = Arcade and PC first
Revolutionary games, while no where near as many as Nintendo, both MS and Sony have had their classics, and very inovative titles.  MS has done lots with PC, sony had the Eye Toy, and the very underated game Vib Ribbon.

Nintendo DID have a game boy player for the N64, they (and other companies) used it often at E3.  You could often see game boy games being demoed with a N64 controler. Why Nintendo never released it, I will never know.  I dont think Nintendo ever showed the player at E3 as a possible new product like they have with other items, like the Nintendo Gamecube Screen, which was shown, but has yet to be released, or even talked about.

Not bashing conectivity or anything, but even the GBA/GCN thing is jsut a spin-off of the VMU and pocketstation from teh Dreamcast and PSone.  Gameube/Game Boy Connectivity is the same basic concept, just on a larger, and definatly better thought out, scale.

Why didn't it win best forign film?

All in all im glad it won, it may not have deserved everything this year, but anything it got one of the other two should ahve got.  RotK got all it's awards AND the awards the other two should have gotten.  It's a fitting tribute to all the films acomplished.

there is no akira 2, but if you enjoyed Akira, pick up "Memories", it has finaly been released on DVD in the USA.  It's a film with 3 short (And completly unrelated films).  all were written by Katsuhiro Omoto, the first two were directed by Koji Morimoto, who did one of the Animatrix shorts, and Tensai Okamura, who worked on Wofl's rain and the 3rd part was directed by Katsuhiro Omoto himself.

The 3 films vary, the first is a drama about a group of space travelers who encounter a derelict spaceship after getting a distress signal from an old opera singer.  The 2nd is more light hearted, about a salary man who takes an unknown drug that turns him into a walking biological weapon and he doesnt know it.  The 3rd is about a family in a town who's daily life revolves arround firing cannons at an unknown enemy.

For the record, these pillows are nothing new.

There have been body pillows of anime characters for years.

Belldandy from Ah My Goddess.
Naru from Love Hina
Shinobu from Love Hina
Chi From Chobtis

I'm surprised DOA body pillows havn't been individually avalible prior to this.

Well First off.....

No script has been done,

As it turns out WETA (As of now) is ony coing the concept work, they are not confirmed to be doign the FX as was thought origionally.

Becasue this is all pre-production stuff, we can't take any of the names seriously, as a final product.  Also can't take the characters seriously, as they are only concepting the costumes, not the characters.

Second, rumor about Radclif playing Shinji.  Rumor came a week or two after the first anouncement of this project.  No script or anything yet, I doubt they are looking at actors yet.

New info about this project has revealed a lot more, mainly how early in production this movie is.  They don't have a final script.  Anno probably will have no involvement (And dispite my earlier comments in May, I am now happy about it.  He'd probably throw a hissy fit halfway through production and walk out).  They don't have a FX studio yet.  They don't have a director.  They Don't have a cast.  This movie is in the earliest of pre-production.  more has been said about this movie than probably any movie from hollywood by this point in production (Except star wars).

i'm just trying to keep my expectations so low that the movie might actually seem tolerable when i watch it.

Might not be in stock, but right now Skies is part of Circuit City's 50% off sale, so you can get the game for $25.

Best Buy had it for $10 a few months ago, and that, plus price match policies led to lots of stores selling out (Got my copy for $6 with pricematch + 10% deals)

I didn't mind the elves.  Sure they weren't there in the book, but there were wirtten in very well.  I also think it was jsut bad timing ont ehri part, the Elves were supposed to be an excuse to get Arwen to Helm's Deep, but when she was cut they had started filming and had probably done to much with the elves to cut them out completely.

As for Return of the King, I went to a midnight show.  We had someone who decided to take Pun to a new level.  Amongst the Hobbit and Elf costumes, there was a guy dressed as Elvis.

The movie was great.  Sarumon was perfectly cut out, and I don't mind since it will be there in the Extended Edition.  Was a big disapointed that there ins't the scouring of the Shire (And won't be even int eh EE) but it was a very obvious thing to be cut.  I'll jsut put that one along side Tom Bombadil in that it was cool, but didn't have to be there.  Loved that the rest of the ending was almost completly unchanged from the book.

The movie itself was great.  The battle at Minas Tirith was fantastic, the Army of the Dead was very creepy.  The battle with Shelob was jsut as I imagined it.  They managed to show most of the emotion seen in the books.  Not only has this trillogy surpassed all trilogies before it, but it has the ebst book to movie translation I think we can ever expect to see in film.

General Gaming / Final Fantasy XI - Who's Playing?
« on: November 28, 2003, 05:47:14 PM »
Well, chances are none of us are on the same server, but how is everyone doing who's playing?  Level, character, server?  What are you up too?

I only made one character so far.

Name:  Miyara
Race:  Mithra
Class:  Red Mage
Level: 10
Server:  Pheonix (Though i've signed up for world emmagration with friends)
City:  San D'oria

So far i'm having a blast.  FFXI has fixed a problem i've had with MMORPG's where it doens't feel like you're making progress.  Yes, like the Penny Arcade guys I did get my butt kicked by a rabbit, but at only level 5 I was able to take on low level orcs and start making money.  At level 10 I can fend for myself in a few dungeons and it just doens't feel as pointless as with say Ultima and Everquest.  The aution system has a very quick learning curve and can be a good way to make money with the random items you get off kills.

The server thing can be a pain, but it really isn't that hard to pick your own server.  You can create, view server, and delete a character in the span of about 60 seconds or so, so you can just keep doing this till you get the server you want.  Pheonix must have been a full server, becasue it took me about 2ish hours to get in.  But durring that time I saw a good dozen other servers so, again, you can get in.  No clue how many there are total (Though there may be 3 more on the way next week).  Ian from machall.com got onto pheonix, and with the large readership at the site, I think a lot of people went for it.  Don't remember if the PA guys let out their server......probably good if they didn't.

The games pretty diverse, and people seem friendly enough.  Only once have i gone to one of the town gathering points to hear two people arguing at eachother.  There is a nice balance of races, and no race seems to be overwhelming the others.  The Tarutaru (the real small characters) are much more popular than I thought, as are the Mithra (The female only cat people) and Galka (The huge male only race).  I expected most people to be elvaan so it's nice to have the diversity.  Only real downside (Though hasn't effected me to much being a red mage) is the lack of White mages to heal party's, though this is a problem in many MMORPG's.  As such if you like to party up, be a white mage and you'll be very popular.

So if you're looking for a new MMORPG, or wanting to get started i'd definatly try it.  If you've had bad experiences i'd still give it a shot on PC since you get the month free.  It's a lot different than what I've palyed before.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo grabs Bandai
« on: November 18, 2003, 04:22:03 AM »
but Nintendo is NOT trying to take over Bandai.

Bandai is not going to be a Nintendo exclusive.  I'd even bet the PS2 STILL gets more games.  I see this as little more than Nintendo's way of paying Bandai for some games.  Which I don't mind.  Any new way that anime games get made is another possible way to get them in the USA.

Bandai doesn't even really own Dragon Ball, just the game rights, if i remember correctly.

The two most high-profile series Bandai actually OWNS are, of course, gundam, and the .hack series.

most of what bandai released in the USA, was not theirs in Japan.  But there are only like 2 anime companies in Japan that will release their own stuff here.  Bandai and Genon (Formerly Pioneer).

Someone asked about trigun, not sure who owns it in Japan, but in the USA Dark Horse owns rights to manga, Genon owns rights to TV series.

I didn't really understand this move.  Bandai's not going to go exclusive to gamecube, and it's not like Nintendo could buy out Bandai.  Bandai's licences are just as well known and valuable as Nintendo's.

On the plus side, hopefully whatever bandai puts onto GC will have an easier time comming to the USA.

As for all the anime, not all the stuff bandai releases in the USA is own by bandai.  They just have US licence rights to a very specific porduct.  Love hina for example, had little to do with Bandai, Bandai just released it to us eager US fanboys.

oh, and Azumanga Daioh kicks the crap out of Love Hina as a coemdy

The song they sung in the trailor is thw song the witches sung in Macbeth.

Not in the book, but I think is a nice touch, if for nothing more than to show that there's a new director, and the tone of the movie will be very different.

Few things I noticed

Michael Gambon as Dumbledor looks to go well.  Sounds a lot more like I imagined him than Richard Harris did.

Neville got skinny.....really skinny

Oldman looks perfect at Sirius.

overall feel looks to make the movie from the much more light hearted first two films into the dark path the 3rd book begins.

Not nearly enough angles to get a good look at Lupin.

No pictures at all (That I could tell) of Trelawney

No direct look at the Dementors.  We all know they probably just went to peter Jackson and asked to borrow the ringwrath costumes

Anyways, 3rd book was my favorite so i'm looking forward to this a lot.  Looks like No more Columbus at the helm is going to work out really well.

I liked the ending a lot.  It left a lot of things open to interpetation, and given they say matrix is partly inspired by anime, i wasn't to surprised.

SPOILER BELOW:

I liked that they left the question at the end about if Neo lived or died.  Thought it was a very good question to leave open.

I am waiting for that one too.    But I think I will wait for the North American release, as my Japanese isn't good enough for a movie like that.

It's ghibli from Japan.  It has subtitles, and might even have the english dub, but who knows.  From what I've heard the new dub isn't done and thye'd never use warriors of the wind, dub.
