There is quite literally nothing they can do to get me to buy an xbox one before the autumn of 2015. By then the market of used games should have settled out and the digital market should be settled as well. If launch titles are still $30 and $40 on their store in 2015 and a lot of titles aren't playable used then I know this isn't a console for me.

Woot right now has a decent computer for super cheap.

I think it's a regular 3DS for $80 if you're interested.

What time do eShop games normally go on sale?

Final Fantasy II/IV on the Super Nintendo. This is my first time playing it and it's really really good. The difficulty does spike super high in the last dungeon. I feel like the instances of random battles increased rapidly and I gained six or seven levels before I got to the final boss, which was a pain with the move that leeches life and the other move that drops you down to 2 hp. Good game overall. I like how short it is.

I think that Guillaume should look into ZHP Unlosing Ranger vs DarkDeath Evilman for the PSP. I think it's in the playstation store. It's the only roguelike I've even been able to really get into. It plays more like a tactics game. It's still unforgiving with the death penalty stuff, but it's weaved into the story and makes dying a lot more palatable.

General Gaming / Re: What was the best year for gaming?
« on: April 16, 2013, 10:35:41 AM »
Personally for me it's 2002

Metroid Fusion
Megaman Zero
Mario Sunshine
Metroid Prime
Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee
Jedi Outkast
Bounty Hunter
harmony of dissonance
robotech battlecry
Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis

okay, so maybe there are better years. But The amount of hours I put into tactics ogre and metroid prime alone make this a great year for me.
Did link to the past come out on gba that year with four swords? Cause that was a big deal in my life.

Korg on DS was an awesome purchase and I hope the easier ability to export your creations gets this title more acclaim.

I play steam games all the time while being offline. I know because when I had clearwire for a month I was regularly without internet. It just didn't work. But I could play steam games. What I couldn't do was play my xbox live arcade games that I bought on my first xbox that broke. That's before I knew you could get the licenses moved over.

I also have a full schedule and not a lot of extra cash, but you just buy games cheap. Outside of Sticker Star the last game I payed more than $20 for was probably DiRT 3.

Spider-Man 2 is great as well.

I agree. I think the shallowness really kills the entire series, and especially this game. Because this game is clearly going for something bigger and grander and since ALL of it is shallow it feels like a waste.

I think LucasArts was actually a really good publisher. Much better than Disney has shown they have any capability of being. But, the services are duplicated so it isn't that big a deal. From 99-2009 they were incredible. Well, 99-05, but still they were good. It's not just about making the game, it's about moving them along, and they were good at that until three or so years ago when they started getting shut down. So I think they will be missed. I love star wars games. So I am worried about who decides on which studios will be doing the games in the future.

I'll post more later, just wanted to say I don't think you were diminishing it on purpose. Not at all. rereading what I wrote, it sounds harsher than I intended. My apologies on that.

My collection is tiny:

Super Mario 3D land
Theatrhythm
Cave Story 3D
Star Fox 64 3D
Paper Mario Sticker Star

Kirby's Pinball Land
Super Mario Land 2
Liberation Maiden
Gargoyle's Quest
Gunman Clive
Link's Awakening DX

It's not been bad for me. I wish virtual console was just loaded up with Gameboy Color titles and I wish retail titles were as cheap on eshop as they are in real life after a couple of months. I really want Luigi's Mansion, but it's hard to buy when I know Gamefly or someone else will be selling it for $25 in four or five months and $15-$20 in eight or nine months. So yeah

I find it interesting how quickly discussions like this are quickly and effortlessly derailed from the topic. Instead of discussions of sexism in games, in this case, or racism or homophobia or other topics along those lines we will jump to all the things surrounding it. We'll talk about who's talking about it, we'll talk about the platform they're using, how anyone could do a better job, how it's not enough, how it's too much, and somehow avoid completely the topic at hand. That's just something to think about. Both in the podcast and in this thread there isn't a lot of discussion of sexism in games.
And I have a major gripe with the podcast talking about being disappointed the comments were turned off. People aren't just making jokes about sandwiches and kitchens. She received hundreds of rape and death threats. You guys just kept talking about the comments and such like people were only doing playful ribbing and that is just not the case. There would be no discussion on the youtube page, it would just be an endless barrage of rape threats. It happens all the time. Whenever people choose to talk up about these sorts of topics large groups of other people respond, not with jokes, but with violent threats, and it's perfectly reasonable for someone to not want to deal with that all day every day of their life.
It's also trivializing to continue to talk about how small a percentage of people do this sort of thing, when it's actually a part of video gaming culture. The people on the podcast talked at length about how defensive they were at things that aren't even slights. When you have that attitude already you're not going to be a part of anything that gets people to stop issuing rape threats over this kind of stuff. So while not everyone is being that vile, we're all a part of a community that encourages it. We dismiss it as not being a lot of people, we dismiss it as not being that bad, we say people should be forced to deal with it and when confronted about our hobby we get defensive and wont' deal with criticism and that sort of silence works right in conjunction with the not as few people as you want to think who are doing a lot more than just telling her to get back in the kitchen.

General Gaming / Re: Sell millions, still a failure?
« on: April 02, 2013, 09:57:05 AM »
We're seeing it in better examples than kickstarter. Investor culture is the idea that if you're not growing you're dying, when in reality making a steady profit is actually good enough. Some companies are starting to buck against the idea that if they don't make more profit than they did last quarter then they're failing as a company. It doesn't make sense to some people that their stock price goes down after a quarter where they make more profit (not just sold more or took in more money but also spent a lot more, they grossed more than they had ever before) than they had before. The idea that you can make money and have your company lose value is something that doesn't make sense.
I'm not for the dissolution of big companies. They have their place, but they don't need to operate on this insane quarter to quarter scenario.

I can't wait for investor culture to die out. It won't be anytime soon, probably not in my lifetime, but it'll die out eventually, because it's not actually sustainable, and that'll be good for everyone.

TalkBack / Re: Embracing the Digital Future on the 3DS
« on: April 02, 2013, 09:00:09 AM »
I buy a few eshop and virtual console games. I don't buy many retail games in general. The price is just too high for me on many titles. I just don't get a lot out of them. Gamefly has decent sales on used 3DS games every now and then so that's when I buy most of my games. If I could've downloaded Theatrhythm for $18 I would have. If I could've downloaded Ocarina for $20 I would have. I have  backlog of old games I'm going through, but I might end up buying Fire Emblem full price because I know it's not going down any time soon and why not have it on my system.
But like many have said, nintendo's lack of a proper account system leaves me wary of going all in. But that wouldn't be as big a concern if I knew I'd be able to get games for reasonable prices.

I am surprised by how much people love this game. I thought it was a lot of arena shooting segments and a setting that was ultimately shallow with a lot of cardboard characters. I cannot believe how many times I was locked in a room and force to fight enemies that came from monster closets. That **** is old and boring. Maybe I'm just tired of shooters, but that particular design element is a real turnoff to me. The flying around on rails was fun. The combat isn't bad unless there was one spare enemy I couldn't find and I couldn't move on because I had to shoot someone. It doens't do it all the time, but it does it enough to where I noticed it.
The story of Booker and Elizabeth is neat, but the payoff isn't really there. They tell you how its going to end fairly early on. Eh, whatever.
I think this game thinks its more important than it is and is saying something that it actually isn't, and I feel like so many reviewers of this game think they're seeing something special that they aren't. Like, the racism ****. There's no discussion or critical analysis going on. It's just like "here's some racist stuff." And then you shoot a bunch of people and we immediately drop out of it. I lends NOTHING to the story, it's just a backdrop that only differs from something like farcry 3 in that this game intentionally makes a cartoon out of it, but they both accomplish the same thing. Which is nothing. The bird means nothing. It's there for one scene. dropping it off in rapture means nothing. seeing rapture means nothing The multiverse ending would be neat, I guess, if I didn't grow up in a world with DC comics or star trek or countless science fiction books that tackle this subject. Even books where you follow the main character who is fighting against a version of himself that he doesn't know is himself exist. So this wasn't actually powerful in any substantive way to me.
Also, Elizabeth really needed more than two scared poses. She crouches in a corner or does the deer in headlights things for just about the entire game. Good move making her invincible though.
I don't like any of the characters, and that's not a good thing to me. I feel no sympathy for booker at any time in this story. Fitzroy isn't a character at all. Comstock is that preacher dude from the x-men comics. Fink isn't a character at all, actually. Like, I don't think he appears. He's just a voice that locks you into another fucking arena fight. The vox populi don't make any sense in the story at all.
I was feeling okay towards it until I started writing down my feelings and I got more and more negative on the game. I guess I don't really like it much at all.

NPD still doesn't have EXACT sales numbers. There is still some fudgework going on where they look at shipping stuff and do some sampling out because unless ever retailer was hooked into a live inventory database that NPD had access too you just can't know. Not only that, but there are some outlets that don't report to NPD. So it further muddies the waters.
The sales stuff is all estimates, both in games and in movies. Most entertainment mediums have the problem of not knowing how much of the product actually gets to consumers, most publishers only have access to how much product they put out.
I don't think Square is putting all their failings on western games. Those just happen to be the biggest named releases they've had recently. Just thinking about the titles I've heard of it's been Hitman, sleeping dogs, ffxiii ii, and tomb raider. I think they expected the western stuff to do better than it did and it is a disappointment to them. Square is fully aware of how jacked up ffxiv. But that's not as important to them right now. Companies with investors run on a stupid quarterly mindset and so they literally only care about what happened most recently. Most recently, Tomb Raider didn't sell as many copies as they expected, even after they spent more money on marketing than they had for any of their previous western made titles. They're bummed. It's a failure. But they're experiencing what happened to PC games about ten years ago. PC games were selling as well as they ever had, the sales weren't dropping at all on PC games, but console games took a leap in sales that the industry didn't really expect. PC games never followed suit so we kept talking about how they were dying, when they were just not keeping up.
We're going to see more and more of this next gen. Certain titles will push sales well beyond what we're used too, and other companies will attempt to match that and end up failing miserably. Except that if they had tried to make a very similar game with slightly less cash and slightly less expectations they'd be fine. If the industry as a whole doesn't look at sales estimates and start talking about how everything is failing in a certain segment just because it's not keeping pace with the few titles that are well above average, then we'll be okay. If they do what they are want to do and judge every game by the outliers then we're going to continue having discussions about how selling millions of copies of a game isn't good enough.

and keeping the hacked wii around continues to be a great decision. It's definitely getting more use of late than the Wii U.
