The staff over at IGN think so. Here's what they say.

Any Wii owners like to confirm and give a short report?
Ma ma sa, ma ma coo sa
Ma ma se, ma ma sa,
Ma ma coo sa

Hmm, seems to make sense to me. Essentially, the Wiimote is doing all the work. It detects where the IR blasts are coming from and reports back to the Wii with that information. I was under the impression that there was data transfering along that wire as well. I have seen some other people claiming to make wireless solutions, and I understand now how they were doing it. Well maybe next time, Nintendo can include a USB cable for charging and toss a rechargeable battery in the sensor bar for people with big projection setups.
