Good, it deserves it. I think I have seen more TV ads for the game than I have for any other 3DS game (ever) and more than any Nintendo game in a couple of years.

Actually it's 1.5 weeks, came out on a friday.  Didn't really fly off the shevles but that's kinda expected since the series was always more cult based but hopefully word of mouth gives the game a couple of years of growth.

Nothing really flew off the shelves this last month, it was an extremely slow month. 100+ thousand for 1.5 weeks of sales is nothing to brush away, especially on a system still early in its install base.

Well it looks like Kid Icarus indeed has some legs in Japan, so it'll be interesting to see just how many it can sell in the end.

Oh and the Vita just continues to do worse and worse.  Wouldn't be a surprise if the Wii actually outsells it next week when Mario Party 9 comes out.

It's really a pity how poorly the Vita is doing in Japan so far.  I went into this in more detail in the Vita topic in Gaming Goodness, but I just got a Vita yesterday and it's an excellent handheld (and, unlike the 3DS, I don't get a headache within moments of booting a game up on it).  The 5 games (3, really. 2 were free) I purchased for it (Uncharted: GA, Lumines Electronic Symphony, Wipeout 2048, Motorstorm RC, and Escape Plan) are all quality experiences in their own ways and I don't regret picking them up.  The upcoming Resistance: Burning Skies, Gravity Rush, and my large backlog of digital PSP games will keep me busy with the Vita for quite some time.

The Vita's two big problems, unfortunately, are that the accessories and games are prohibitively expensive and the software lineup isn't enticing to Japanese tastes yet.  That might change once it gets a big dating sim; cookie-cutter handheld JRPG; or the next incredibly boring Monster Hunter game (yes, I know.  I have a really low opinion of the Japanese gaming market), but Sony needs to really get the Vita software rolling.  I like what's there, but the Vita needs more of it and more original software to contrast the platform from the PS3.

Ah, sorry! I must have missed the sales numbers article when I was browsing my RSS feeds. That, or maybe I have too much Xenoblade Chronicles on my mind.

Also, I should really relearn how to use tables. It looks so much better than my copy+paste operation. Gonna have to brush up on my high school HTML skills!

A few bits of new sale data:  Xenoblade NA sales have broke 200K which is higher than the other regions.  Take that NOA!

Also, Fire Emblem 3DS is selling well for it's first week out in Japan, about 1/4 million which is great for an FE title.  Hopefully we'll get an NA release date soon.

And then there's Dragon's Quest X news.  "It looks like Dragon Quest X: Waking of the Five Tribes Online will be hitting Japan sooner than expected. As reported by Andriasang, Square Enix announced the Wii version of the game will be released on August 2. This new title marks the first MMORPG entry in the series. A Wii U version is set to follow, though no new information is available at present.

Dragon Quest X arrives in Japan soon.
Dragon Quest X will sell for 6,980 yen (that's around $86), with a separate version that includes a USB flash drive going for 8,980 yen ($110). A flash drive of some sort is required to play the game, which comes with a 20-day free trial. Otherwise subscription costs range from 1,000 yen ($12) for 30 days to 1,950 yen ($24) for 60 days and 2,900 yen ($36) for 90 days. Both credit cards and Wii points can be used for subscription fees."

So you'll get 20 days to play the game (wonder if this applies to people that rent as well).

It would be awesome if this game outsells Metroid: Other M. I know Other M has sold less than half a million units, so its a very reachable goal.

Doubt it, in Metroid case, they overprinted copies so the game was marked in the bargin bin and since then it's past the 1 million mark.

In Xenoblade case, since GS/Nintendo are the only retailers the number of unsold units is very small so there' not going a flood of them on the market so make the price drop anytime soon.  I expect maybe at best another 100K mark which would place the Life time sales around 700K which isn't to bad (300K NA, 200K Europe, 200K Japan).

$461.2 million loss for fiscal 2011
They mainly blame the 3DS and Wii price cuts for the losses, but software sales were slower than expected in US and EU.

3DS is selling at a loss for Nintendo
They do hope to profit at some point in this fiscal year though as production costs come down.  So I'm guessing it's not a huge loss.

As great as the game is doing, we can all agree it could be doing far better if it wasn't hobbled by Gamestop being the only retailer allowed to sell it.

Is there any chance, any chance at all, of Nintendo doing a more expanded release of the game in the future and having all retailers like Walmart and Amazon involved?

The only reason it was released here at all was GameStop taking on some of the risk of it, so I would argue that it being GameStop exclusive has resulted in about 200,000 more sales than it would have gotten if it weren't.

I'm not sure if an expanded release of Xenoblade would have really resulted in a higher sales number.  I've walked into several gamestops and each of them had plenty of the game in stock.

I imagine most people who wanted the game are getting it, or will get it without it being available at every Wal-Mart and Best Buy.

I understand that, but now it has been proven to be a strong seller so now there is zero risk whatsoever for Nintendo to ship it out to other retailers and give it the promotional backing it deserves.

It's also possible that XenoBlade's limited release has caused everyone who was interested to rush out and get it to make sure they secure a copy, something that wouldn't have happened with a wider release. Plus, some people bought extras to sell on eBay.

That depends. It could have been a limited time exclusivity deal which would expire at some point, as opposed to being permanent exclusivity. Even if it was just for a limited time, Gamestop has benefited enormously and made back whatever their investment was and then some.

I hate to break it to you all but the 200k numbers are from VGChartz which means they're false.  VGChartz numbers are only somewhat accurate when they steal NPD data after it's released.  The thing is Xenoblade was released in April and its still April so the NPD hasn't released any numbers for the game yet.

VGChartz always makes up numbers for when the games are just released and then they make changes once the real NPD data gets released.  So we're not going to know what Xenoblade really sold until April NPD results are revealed in May.

Sigh, we already discussed this multiple time now but Vgchartz numbers are estimates just like NPD are.  Two, the main reason VG numbers are higher is because NPD is US ONLY.  Three, there's only two retailers that can sell this game, Xenoblade so the mom and pops stores don't even factor this time.

Here's the thing. NPD gets data from about 80% of retailers and extrapolates the rest. VGChartz pretty much just pulls their numbers out of their butts. They are no more reliable than you or I guessing a number. VGChartz are not even SLIGHTLY credible, and using them as the basis for any discussion on numbers pretty much kills the credibility of the person using them. I am guessing u got that 1 million mark for Metroid for them, so I doubt Other M came anywhere close to it.

"NPD gets data from about 80"  Actually it's roughly 60% and that's right from NPD website :0.  And that's only US %.  VGcharts uses basically the same data collected from the big retailers Amazon, Walmart, GS ect and make an calculation based on units sold and their goal is to come within 80% of actual sales.

And no, Metroid Other M did breach the 1 million mark.  The game hit the bargin bin at $10 or less and retailers just unloaded their stocks.  Metroid Other M was expected to sell well and it bombed hense huge stockpile of games sitting at retailers.  Another example of huge bomb that ending up selling over an 1 million was Mirror's Edge.  Didn't do crap (something like 200K for the first 10 weeks) but once it hit the bargin bin it sold.
