For some reason I look at that JoyCon Grip and my conspiracy-addled brain keeps whispering to me "Is that a Touchpad? Is that a Touchpad?"

I thought the same but I don't see why it would be necessary.

Ewww....and it would probably feel like those Synaptics touchpads on old Windows laptops.

Am I the only one hoping the Switch releases with a bunch of color options? I'm kind of tired of the whole black/white/grey console thing.

However I'd really like to think that the four Nintendo 1st Party games shown in the trailer won't turn out to be vaporware and instead will actually come out (unlike the Zelda Wii U demo...).

I bet the 1st party games they showed will come out.  They are all games we are expecting anyways. Wasn't that Zelda Wii U demo shown the same year that Skyward Sword came out?  It was a little unbelievable that Nintendo would have even been thinking about Zelda's Wii U iteration.

The gameplay looks pretty good, but the character design (and art style in general) looks a little too much like a Dreamworks cartoon to me...which is kind of a disappointment.

I've started playing another game that came with the bundle: Okami.  So I'm wondering why I didn't play this when it was brand new or when it came out on the Wii.  I knew it was critically acclaimed and I knew it was a Zelda clone and I love Zelda.

I was in the same boat.  I never played it simply because I wasn't in the mood for another Zelda-like game with a wolf (and I played Twilight Princess first).  Nice to hear you're enjoying it though...after I finish Skyward Sword I'll need something to fill the time between now and the NX (and unplayed Wii games are a good way to go).

I'm REALLY a fan of the first couple of hours, i'd be interested to hear your feedback once you get started.

I've already made it through the first 6 hours (at the second dungeon) and I have quite enjoyed the beginning of the game.  There is a good bit more text than in other Zelda games, but the setting, story, and general pace more than made up for it.  I especially loved the Beetle item in the first dungeon.

Also, I read a gamefaqs guide to the motion controls before playing which gave me a better sense of what to expect and how best to execute each move.  I haven't had any issues at all with the controls.

And I can see a scenario where USB 3(.1) is advertised strictly as a storage port, with the 2.0 ports used for backwards compatible accessories.

I sincerely hope that the USB ports can draw enough power individually for an external hard drive without the need for an external power supply.  Tracking down one of those split USB cables was a pain in the butt for the Wii U.

So...I'm really glad I held off on purchasing this game in August since they announced its arrival on the Wii U eshop today in the direct. I'll be downloading it tomorrow!  Surely, this comes with that critical patch pre-installed...

TalkBack / Re: My Nintendo Gold Coin Expiration Extended
« on: September 01, 2016, 11:35:22 PM »
My point was this new system was supposed to reward players for buying and playing games frequently, but they replaced all the rewards with discounts or digital t-shirts, not full games, VC or eShop games.

This can all be tweaked easily in the future. The main improvements are that the web interface is much better and that coins are automatically awarded after a digital purchase.  I personally think the rewards are better. I've already used a 30% discount on OOT 3D and gotten TP picross and a Zelda theme for free.  The rewards also seem to be rotating more frequently than Club Nintendo.

Im glad it has been extended, but I think they shouldn't expire at all.

Agreed, but this is so much better than it was.  I will have no problem finding something to use them on over the course of a year.

I'm not sure if you've seen this yet but this guy does an amazing job of analyzing the music for the game and even finds a few interesting things in the main theme.

That was a fantastic analysis. I've heard a lot of people describe BoTW as "painterly" or "in the style of Miyazaki", but never someone go into depth about how it's actually an example of Impressionism.

Plus no one dies in IV, it's the cheeriest of all ST movies.

I thought IV was awesome growing up. Scotty trying to talk into the computer mouse...Spock and the punk kid on the bus...definitely cheery/funny stuff in there.  I'll probably see Beyond when it's available to rent.  I'm just not sure it's worth securing a babysitter for.

I'm making a list of movies/tv shows with really good Synth Soundtracks

Thanks for the reminder that it's almost time for my re-watch of It Follows.  Fantastic movie and soundtrack.

You're right.  I probably should have qualified that statement..."best one for non-fans" is more accurate (although I know a lot of Star Trek fans who like First Contact better than Wrath of Khan).

Star Trek: Beyond - 6/10

This is actually the first Star Trek movie (or anything, really) that I've seen.

Well, it's certainly nothing like traditional Star Trek.  For comparison, you should at least try to watch Star Trek: First Contact. It is the most "actiony" of the pre-Abrams movies, but has a fantastic plot and character development. Most fans consider First Contact to be the best Star Trek movie.

I tried downloading higher quality games on mobile, but I hated the controls.

For me it was the controls and the lack of depth.  Strangely, as graphics got prettier and the swiping got fancier, it just made want a game I could really sink my teeth into.  It was playing the Secret of Mana port on iOS that convinced me I just needed to go out and buy a 3DS.  I think the market of lapsed gamers or gamers who want something a little more than mobile can offer shouldn't be underestimated.  The NX has a real opportunity there.

No one has an opinion on the melody?

I'm a big fan of the BOTW music so far.  It's melodic, complex, and the way they incorporate all the flutes really fit the theme of being in an exotic, far-off land.  I think it definitely has the potential to be my favorite Zelda theme.

I'm still playing through Twilight Princess HD and while the dungeons have been so much fun I am quite ready for it to be over. I am very interested in revisiting Skyward Sword but it will have to wait.

I was in the same boat...played through TP (not HD) a few months ago and needed a little break.  I plan on picking up SS to play in August/September.  Surprisingly, the game has been difficult to find for a good price.  Used copies are still holding their value at $50 USD.

...it seems like your best bet is to use the integrated Motion Plus wiimote with fresh batteries (on second run I had a motion plus dongle and crummy over-the-hill rechargable batteries).

Got it. I've always had issues needing to recalibrate on motion plus games.

Nintendo Gaming / Advice before playing Skyward Sword
« on: July 14, 2016, 09:26:58 AM »
Skyward Sword is the only 3D Zelda game I haven't played (I don't think I'm the only one in this camp).  I figure it's time to find a copy and at least give it a chance so I can say I've played them all before BotW comes out.

Does anyone have advice for how to best play through this game to maximize its positive attributes and minimize its annoyances?  As an example, I've read that I should probably avoid all the sidequests--they are mostly "fetch quests" that aren't worth it.

Also, I'm not committed to having to play through the whole thing. So, your tip may be something like, "play up to point x, the rest of the game sucks".

Thanks in advance!

There seems to be one major difference between the first game and this one--some of the costumes actually give you a special ability.  The wizard costume, for example, now allows you to create one extra box than the level allows.  What I don't know yet, is if the special abilities are required for getting some of the crowns.  I've been playing the game through without using any special abilities and, up to World 7, there's only been one crown I can't figure out.

I just hope it's more of the DS/3DS complimentary approach and not the Wii/Wii U tradeoff approach.

This is why I took so well to the 3DS.  It was more powerful and the additional gimmick was totally optional, but also pretty cool when implemented well.  As it matured, developers (even Nintendo) got even better at designing for a 3D effect (Kirby Triple Deluxe, SM3DLand) and the handheld itself implemented it better with "super stable 3D".

Not sure how NX could mimic this.  Maybe a pretty standard controller with one little twist--like the analogue stick on N64 or the C-stick on Gamecube?

It's kind of like how a video game thread gets way more posts before the game releases than after it.

The Letter may be one exception to that rule.

I had a similar idea last year, but ultimately decided to only play the ones I had never played before, but had heard a lot of fanfare about.  For me, these were Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening.  The 3DS version of MM is totally beatable without a guide using the new Sheikah Stone "help" feature.  You will probably need a few hints every so often with Link's Awakening until you learn the unique language of that game.

Ultimately, these two titles became my favorite 3D and 2D entries in the series.

I wish I could have my memory of Link's Awakening erased so I could play it again for the first time.  I am jealous of those of you who get to.

Ditto.  Maybe I can live vicariously through my son in a couple years when he's old enough to play it.
