Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 438: Spiritual Predecessor

I'm surprised at how emotional I got over your announcement, Jonny.  I'm really excited to see where the show goes and have a lot of faith in the rest of the crew (plus Greg!), but it's kind of like hearing that a member of your favorite band who you've been following for nearly a decade is leaving.

I'll leave you with one great story.  It just so happens that I taught a high school senior last year whose voice sounded EXACTLY like yours. At the end of class, while the students were working math homework problems, I put on a clip of RFN instead of the usual background piano music.  The look of confusion on all the student's faces was priceless as they tried to figure out what one of their classmates was doing on a video game podcast and why he "sounds really educated now".

Thank you for all the time you invested in the podcast...you will be missed.

Ok, any tips on the third boss (The one with the disappearing squares)?  I am still stuck on it.  I enter the boss room with both meters full and still am unable to beat it.  I mostly have been trying to shoot it from a distance, avoid its fire, and use the close range weapon/mines if possible.  It could totally be an issue of me not being good at the game.

I too picked up a cheap copy of Fever and enjoyed playing in on the WiiU, only to learn that there is significant lag when playing the Wii mode through the TV. Afterward I booted the game on the Gamepad, and sure enough there was a lag on the TV that wasn't present on the Gamepad.

Interesting.  I consider myself fairly musical and didn't perceive any lag. Maybe I'll try it on the gamepad just to compare.

Umm...fun over boring?

After hearing a lot of talk about the new Rhythm Heaven game, I decided it was time for me to pony up and get the original for the DS. This game is so whacky and fun I absoutely adore it.

I just picked up a $5 copy of Rhythm Heaven Fever for Wii and love it as well.  It's one of those rare games that is fun to play and everyone in the family enjoys watching.

One of my guesses (and one for many people) is that they will expand on the idea of using the handheld as a controller for the console.  The 3DS works great as a smash controller.  This would allow them to do backwards compatibility for Wii U games. Instead of of bundling a gamepad with the new NX console, they could just say "if you buy the NX handheld, it will function as a gamepad."

The man problem would be uncharacteristic lack of QA and polish for Mario game. Then gimmicky levels with physics that doesn't work at all yet still ended up in (watermelon, pachinko).

I knew that watermelon level was bad even as a teenager playing Sunshine.

Galaxy's camera has far worse flaws, in my opinion.

Yeah, like you can't really move it at all.

Mario and Luigi: Dream Team (3DS):

I walked away from this at about the same time I started Witcher 3, and then went back to it after I walked away from Witcher 3.

I'm ashamed to say Dream Team is the only game I've ever stopped playing after sinking 30 hours into it.  I just couldn't take it any longer.  I don't play many games, and therefore don't regret time spent playing games that often, but this was a major regret.

I also wasn't expecting Jason/Kane to take fall damage, so... that was a thing.

I will echo this.  Don't let Jason fall off a ladder...or you will die.

the top-down stuff is a little bit on the rough side thanks to details like Jason/Kane holding his firearm at his side and thus the shots coming out the side and prohibiting you from hitting enemies who take advantage of this.

This is one of the most frustrating things about the game. You have to really work hard at positioning yourself so a shot actually hits an enemy.  The worst enemy in the game, in my opinion, are the worms during the SOPHIA/Tank segments that are too short for the tank to hit.  Unless I am missing something, you have to get Jason out of the tank every time to kill one (or use homing missiles or something).   Overall, I'm having fun with this game, despite the occasional drastic frame rate drop when there is a lot of action on the screen. I've made it to the third boss.

Could we both play through Download Play and find a third player online?

162
So, I was not too excited about this game when it was announced.  But in reviewing some old E3 impressions articles about it, looks like it supports Download Play requiring only one cartridge.  That, may be a killer feature for me.  My wife and I love the Zelda franchise lore, and she often watches me play the main games and wishes there was a multiplayer option.  I envision this game as something we both play together for a half hour a night and have a blast trying to figure out the puzzles.  This also solves the problem of not being able to communicate via voice chat since we'll be in the same room.

Edit: So, apparently Shikata released a statement saying it is only one or three human players. If one drops out online, you will get a "game over" screen.  What could be the thinking behind this? If it's not a specific gameplay reason, it seems like a poor choice.

Those numbers for Tengami just reveal how crazy big ios volumes are.  At least the Wii U version is keeping up with mac/pc sales.

Blaster Master--not such a bad outcome for the Retroactive Jr.!

165
I wouldn't be completely shocked if he ended up in that job someday, I think he's got the best chance of anyone who's not Japanese, but it's not happening now.

Yes, especially since his Japanese is supposedly nearly perfect.  I think it's more likely that he will lead NOA someday.

The Wall Street Journal has an article today that focuses on the possibility of Miyamoto taking over.  I'm sure Nintendo's been working out a plan for someone else internally who has a better business sense to take the reigns, but it seems like the media is really soaking up the idea of "the father of Mario" leading the company.  Again, it's not a feasible long-term option, but I kind of think Nintendo should at least name Miyamoto interim CEO and take advantage of all the positive press attention they will get--they could certainly use it right now.

167
As many have noted, the game may actually be quite good.  It seems that the style and marketing were just way off.  That name, Federation Force, it is just terrible.  Not only does it look like Skylanders, it SOUNDS like a Skylanders game.

168
Thanks, Enner.  The atmosphere it invokes is definitely up my alley.  I'm very curious to hear how fun the actual gameplay is when it comes to NA.

169
Can anyone give a basic summary of what this game is about (I've never played the series).  It looks like Pokemon Snap meets RE.  Do you solve environmental puzzles?  Is it really linear or more open exploration?  I would watch the Treehouse segment, but I'm afraid of seeing too much of the game.

170
I recall a few years ago that Miyamoto saying he wanted to scale back his responsibilities and work on smaller games. I can't see him succeeding Iwata either. That doesn't seem like it's up his alley.

Agreed, but I could see him in the "interim CEO position" until NX launches.  Nintendo needs to quickly make a decision to show shareholders that they have things under control for the time being.  I think Miyamoto is a safe choice given that he is a) extremely popular and likable and b) basically going to follow through with Iwata's original plans.

Rive: I have a lot of respect for Two Tribes as Toki Tori is one of my favorite puzzle games of all time.  Rive, however, seems to stutter a bit when there's a lot of action on screen and I found the boss fight to be too easy (I just sat in the corner and held down the "shoot" button to defeat it.  It could shape up to be a great game, but I need to see it again closer to release.

Freedom Planet:  Loved the style, but the controls seemed overly complex to me.  I guess I was expecting the simplicity of the Sonic controls.

I've been debating with myself about Miyamoto taking over.  On the pro side, Miyamoto would be a unifying figure that most hard core Nintendo fans would rally behind (with an obvious record of accomplishments).  I'm not convinced he has enough business prowess to handle the job, but I've been impressed lately with some of his answers to interview questions regarding the failure of the Wii U.  He seems to have a grasp on what went wrong and what needs to be done to fix it.  Also, there was the internal story that came out where he basically forced Nintendo to ship the New 3DS with super stable 3D at the last minute because "there'd be no point in releasing it without that feature".  While the New 3DS still hasn't been justifiable for most, I think we can agree it would be completely useless without the stable 3D.  So, I guess I'm hoping for Miyamoto to take over.
