NWR Forums Discord / The case study of a Spyke.
« on: July 30, 2013, 07:18:28 PM »
After several observations of fellow forum member Tj Spyke I have decided to compile a list of rules or common themes that have been exhibited by our good friend Mr. Spyke. In order to present these rules in the best way possible I have chosen to give them from the perspective of the man himself.

Quote from: TJ Spyke
Rule #1. I'm always 100% right,

Rule #2. See rule number 1

Rule #3. Any form of facts, reason, statistics or logic used against my point  is automatically nullified by rule #1

Rule #4: see rule #1

Rule #5: should i fail to provide any sort of facts, reason, statistics or logic of my own rule #1

Rule #6: I mentioned rule #1 right, that's pretty important

Rule #7: I alone can determine how reliable a source is, my judgment of said source is fully supported by rule #1

Rule #8: don't ever dispute rule #1

Rule #9: should you decide that whatever argument we get into is pointless and stupid* I automatically win

*this rule also applies to anybody who realizes that they might as well argue with a brick wall,

Does anyone have any questions? comments? or concerns?

when i purchased animal crossing i also picked up a few other things such as cave story and  the oracle games.
i have barely touched any of them
additionally i still have some ambassador games left to complete....

the 3DS is turning into my downloadable backlog and that frightens me.

its nowhere near substantial enough to cause me to create a backloggery but still...

Nintendo Gaming / Is the Wii U underpowered?
« on: June 12, 2013, 04:40:27 PM »
There's a lot of fanboys out there with a power-fetish that believe that having as many cores as possible in a CPU clocked at insane speeds is inherently better. Which just isn't true anymore for today's CPUs.

the Xbone and PS4 may have this fancy 8 core CPU, but both companies made it clear that their consoles shift their focus beyond games alone, describing various multitasking type functions going in the background. This would mean that some precentage of those 8 cores are simply off-limits for actual games.

Also, Wii U is confirmed to run Yebis 2, which is the middleware used in Square-Enix's Luminous engine. Remember the Agni's Philosophy demo? The Wii U can run that too. There isn't a single engine running on PS4 and Xbone, that the Wii U can't handle.
So yeah, if all the raging fanboys (including some devs) can put the Wii U is underpowered thing to rest, that'd be great, because it's simply not true.

NWR Forums Discord / Donkey Konng Country Returns: Tropical Freeze
« on: June 12, 2013, 03:29:45 PM »
At E3 this year Nintendo announced a sequel to Donkey Kong Country Returns, known as Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze. The DK crew is back, collecting bananas and riding minecarts as this time they defend DK island from a new threat: Vikings.

Now many of you are thinking, what does Minnesota have to do with this? isn't Nintendo probably just using Nordic Vikings? While at first glance that would seem to be the case an examination of the title: Tropical Freeze, is what brings Minnesota into the picture.

The word freeze refers to Minnesota's notorious Winter season. this past winter alone stretched long into the year, ending with a blizzard in May, the word tropical, refers to the common joke of wanting to move to somewhere like Hawaii.

However moving to Hawaii is expensive, leading people in the state to learn to live with their fate.

Meanwhile after a sporting history that could be considered spotty at best the Vikings have decided they needed a reboot of sorts, thus they have come to DK Island to try to convince DK to join their number and become part of their new image, which would ultimately result in them being refered to as the Minnesota Gorrilas.

The Vikings then hired an elite swat team to bring them additional forces, and chose to use the attire of their nordic namesake...
the conclusion:
everytime you defeat one of these guys

You are killing a hardworking minnesotan brought here against his will,
and those penguins? They're from the zoo, and they're endangered.

Nintendo Gaming / What do you want in the next Zelda game?
« on: May 27, 2013, 11:03:07 AM »

i recently played through twilight princess a bit and as i was playing I began to ask myself "whats wrong with the Zelda formula". it is a bit blatant in that particular game but honestly the formula works fine. What do you think? does it need to be changed or does it simply need to be handled differently...

Nintendo Gaming / The Wii U and next Gen: What can Nintendo do?
« on: May 17, 2013, 07:57:11 AM »
The general consensus seems to be that the Wii U is underpowered. whether this claim holds 100% true or not is still uncertain but it will hurt the Wii U's image nonetheless. How can Nintendo handle this situation. What do you think?

Nintendo Gaming / Bluetooth: a Tale of two Screens
« on: May 02, 2013, 11:06:03 PM »
anybody know of an adapter of some kind that I can use to connect the 3DS to my Bluetooth headset? I have a wired pair (which has seen better days) but the Bluetooth headset has caused me to retire it to devices that are not Bluetooth compatible (all of which are made by Nintendo)... any other solution of any sort...

Reader Reviews / A Forgotten Gem [Spyro:Year of the Dragon]
« on: April 13, 2013, 06:02:13 PM »
I have already spoken small praises here and there to the Playstation's Classic series. I have decided out of boredom to review Spyro 3.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon was released in 2000(which is the year of the dragon on the zodiac calandar) and is the last game in the series to have been handled by Insomniac. the game may not have been on the N64 but it shares more then a few tropes with games on that console.

Storywise the Dragons have a collection of 150 dragon eggs. however an evil sorceress creatively named... the Sorceress, has sent her minions to steal them all and bring them to the Forgotten Realms... although it does have some neat between the lines type of lore and is relatively well told it still serves as a new excuse to get the little dragon from Point A to  point B.

Presentation wise this game hits everything with flying colors, it does certainly feel like a relic of it's time but it presents itself very well from within the limitations of the first Playstation. the characters are well animated and full of life and the game also features full (and extremely campy) voice acting and a top notch soundtrack.

And this brings us to where the game truely stands tall, the  characters, from 007 parody Sgt Byrd(Byrd, James Byrd) series mainstays like Moneybags, the game has created a wonderful cast of characters that bring everything together.

The game itself plays alot like platformers of it's day, the 150 eggs play the same role as the stars in Mario 64. the levels themselves function more like the ones found in Banjo Kazooie however they do feature a main objective of some form.

Spyro 3 introduced various new playable characters that vary in playstyle(for better or worse) and also adds various intresting little side mission objectives. (including guiding a fireball into a lava pool to restart the sun and playing hockey with cats.)

However Spyro's core gameplay has not changed, being a dragon he naturally carries the ability to breathe fire and glide in addition to the standard run and jump platforming abilities... his arsenal is utilized in various different ways and enhanced by certain power ups, Sparx, a staple of the series, serves as a color coded health indicator, yellow for full, blue for 3/4th's green for half, if he disappears you are one hit from death.

The game isn't without its problems, the added characters for the most part don't feel as polished as Spyro himself (or as the tacked on skateboarding thing for that matter). the game is also not very different from the previous entrys in the series. it features more content then ripto's rage(gateway to gliminer) but no major new mechanics. the game is a bit easy if you aren't planning to collect everything and honestly, despite having been optimized for the Dualshock it doesn't always control the best in some of the minigame segments but anybody who enjoys N64 era platforming should see what could be found on the other side of the console wars. the game can be found on PSN i believe and i imagine is a relatively easy find physically.

Nintendo Gaming / What do you want with the Wii U virtual console.
« on: April 12, 2013, 08:19:11 PM »
for me, outside of systems like the Dreamcast and Gamecube, i want a new Classic Controller redesign based on the original... two more face buttons and slightly better erogonomics(in a way that retains a more classic feel) along with the ability to map the buttons(which i believe you can already do)

but this controller would exclusively hold the ability to have turbo buttons(along with the ability fastforward/slowmotion setup) in virtual console games.

what do you guys want?

Nintendo Gaming / Fire Emblem Awakening
« on: April 05, 2013, 12:08:10 AM »
so... with little over a week to rub it into those euro jerks... lets talk fire emblem

am I the only one put off by the blue glow on the outrealms characters... also I hate that swordmasters got nerfed so badly, and why is it archers/snipers are the only ones that can use longbows,

one of the child characters(not saying who) starts as a knight and has(for me)  amazing speed growth, Its awesome...

but I love the class system in general so :/

Nintendo Gaming / The world of 3DS revisions.
« on: March 29, 2013, 10:02:36 PM »
im planning to upgrade to an XL on black friday(unless a 3DS lite is announced) i'm curious, what would make you upgrade  to a 3DS revision, how much battery is enough

for me, some of the jaggies on the screen get annoying imo and 8-12 hours is plenty. a more efficient sleep mode maybe?

and i think we can lay the built in circle pad pro to rest here, it's not happening

General Gaming / Is Xbox Live a Ripoff
« on: February 17, 2013, 04:18:15 PM »
[I have decided to bump this thread to provide some previous discussion we can use to address the larger topic of if Xbox Live is worth paying 60$ a month for, the original 'XBL vs on disc dlc' debate remains intact]

all i want for online services is online play, a store, and maybe voice chat.. i dont really care about the extras and i already have internet. what makes the xbox so special that i should have to pay a seperate fee just so somebody at microsoft can flip a switch and let me do things i can already do(and paid for) on the PS3 or Wii U(including online services like netflix that i'm also already paying for)

[here i pose the original topic discussion comparing Xbox Live to on disc DLC...]

Now to address the clickbait title...  people complain about on disc dlc and that's exactly what xbox live charges for... locked features in your 200$ game system... at least on disc DLC has the DECENCY to be a one time fee

So i ask... WHAT MAKES THE XBOX SO SPECIAL THAT I SHOULD PAY 60 BUCKS A YEAR TO DO WHAT CAN BE ALREADY DONE ON PSN AND NINTENDO NETWORK....

Lets try to keep this civilized

Nintendo Gaming / 3ds adhoc party
« on: February 20, 2012, 09:35:41 PM »
I really think nintendo should create their own version of adhoc party(adhoc party  is a ps3 thing that allows psp games that only  have local wireless to play online. This would allow games like star fox and monster hunter that were not given online in development to get online. While this would not be as good as having true online it could be nice to have
