The Getaway starring Steve McQueen. Man, this was a weird movie. Not weird in a strange hallucigenic or Pan's Labrynth kind of way. Weird as in I don't get why people did what they did or what the point of certain things was. And yet, I'm going to give an 7.5 out of 10.
The movie starts off fine enough with McQueen shown in prison life and then getting out and starting on a heist. The heist and the aftermath are alright as well since you're unsure how things are going to go. But during this time, you begin to wonder why some people act the way they do or where the movie is heading or how it hopes to resolve itself. And that feeling never really leaves you. Nor do I think the movie every really does resolve itself well. There were still too many questions in my mind. Plus, the way they try to put a bit of a spin on the main characters and try for a bit of a happy ending is laughable.
I guess the best way to describe the movie is that it is a bit like a modern Bonnie and Clyde. Still, the movie is such a mixed bag of things that I feel it did right and things that I feel it could have done better.
At the end of the day, I still have to recommend this movie for the sheer fact that it stars Steve McQueen. Anything with him in it is must-see. He truly is the King of Cool. Just watching him on screen, you feel a part of that cool as well. Watching him chase down a con artist who stole his suitcase of money or walking down the street with a shotgun and blasting a police cruiser help cement that reputation. Although, I did think he lost a bit of that cool in one scene where he slaps up MacGraws character in anger a bit. But he soon redeems himself and goes back into full swagger mode soon thereafter.
