The British line of independent Nintendo magazines is no more.

Following the upcoming heartbreaking closure of Nintendo Power, which was announced last week, Future is now also planning to close Nintendo Gamer magazine.

In response to the closure, Nintendo Gamer publisher Lee Nutter responded to CVG with the following statement: ''After careful consideration we've taken the decision to close Nintendo Gamer magazine. However, with Future's ongoing strategy to drive digital growth across its international, digitally-focused brand business, the website, Nintendo-Gamer.net will continue as excitement builds ahead of Nintendo's Wii U launch."

The line of independent British Nintendo magazines started 20 years ago in 1992 with Super-Play and was followed up by N64 Magazine, NGC and the finally NGamer. This week's issue, which will be released on September 6, will be its last. The final issue will include a feature, that holds insights from old editors as well as covers from the magazines history.

''We've tried to give Nintendo Gamer a fitting send-off and this issue is dedicated to all of our loyal readers from over the years. We hope they enjoy it," added Ellis. Similar to the decisions made at Nintendo Power, the current print editors will be moved to other Future positions.

Super-Play? I have an issue or two of that some where. It was a damn good read, but as much as I enjoyed it at the time, I was in no position to buy anymore issues than the ones my parents graced me with. The folks at Super-Play knew a good game when they saw one and didn't involve themselves too much in the console war outside of a couple of fact sheets. Even back then I appreciated dry British humour.

Ah Super Play. I honestly believe it was the single best UK Games publications ever and was light years ahead of the Offical Nintendo magazine. If you are a SNES fan (which you should be), you can read English (which, er you are doing, I hope) and you have internet access you owe it to yourself to track down the various up loads or buy some old issues on ebay. Truly it is worthy of your time.
As for the rest, it was pretty good during the N64 era but it did go progressively down hill. GCN was still a go to magazine when the Game Cube launched all though it had lost a lot of it's style and humor. I occasionally still buy print media (I know, I know) but Nintendo Gamer has never been worth the cover price.


I was looking at a few magazine covers the other day in the Newsagent each boasting "Every WiiU game previewed!" and knowing that all they had done was write up each of the E3 demos that are all over youtube and covered beautifully on this very web site. I had to wonder how these things could stay in print.
As nostalgic as old magazines make me, I think what we have in Nintendo World Report and the podcasts is much better than what we've ever had before in terms of coverage and community. Not bad for a bunch of volunteers!

I never heard of this Nintendo Gamer magazine, but then again I'm not British. Between the demise of Nintendo Power and this, what do we as Nintendo fans have left in the way of print magazines? Is there anything left?

There's Nintendo Dream in Japan, but of course that doesn't really help most people on here...

Future actually had 2 Nintendo magazines in the UK. The other one is Official Nintendo Magazine, which is the one that is licensed by Nintendo as official, Future will continue printing that magazine.
