General Gaming / Shocktober 2020: Play scary games here.

Shocktober - A Month-Long Journey Through The Horror Game Genre

Some may say the real world is scary enough in 2020, but I won't let that stop us!

When does this start?

Shocktober begins on October 1st, and will last the entire month of October, ending after Halloween night.

What should I play?

Anything remotely spooky or halloweeny will suffice. If horror isn't your thing than there's plenty of stuff like the Castlevania series or Demon's Crest that will also fit the bill. This is basically a themed Backlaugust but the focus is more on playing games and sharing your experiences than beating them.

Who should participate?

If you:

a. Enjoy horror games
and/or
b. Have at least one horror game in your backlog
and/or
c. Plan on buying a new horror game
d. Have something remotely halloweeny

you should do this!

The purpose of this is a little less about seeing how many games we can beat, but for everyone to share in the experience of playing something scary. A good horror game can be a tough thing to get all of the way through to the end, but with some moral support from the rest of the community that's going through the same thing, maybe we can all make it back into the light by November! That's what it comes down to -- having fun, and being scared shitless. And being scared shitless is a lot more fun when being scared shitless as a group.

53
I'm playing through this on the DS version on the Wii U Virtual Console. It's been a real hoot. I like playing a version of Mario 64 wherere the camera isn't an absolute nightmare and the extra characters and stuff they added are real fun as well. I definitely want to dabble with the original more. I know I have a save from the Wii VC version that was in the castle's second floor that I could pull up to mess around with some of the later stages but honestly, the DS version having a functioning camera system really puts it over the edge for me.

The original game is impressive as hell for it's time, and I do feel it took a while for time to catch up with it, but as gaming has evolved more and more, it's age has started to show more and more.

54
I have more than 200 games on my Switch so it's basically unmanageable now. It's absurd that we've gotten so far into the Switch's lifespan without getting folders. I don't understand what the hold up is. It's inexcusable.

I just got Hades on my PC. I would greatly prefer to play it on switch but I'm at the point where I am actively trying to avoid buying games on my Switch because it's just impossible to manage a large library on it.

I was at the Battle of Gamefaqs. The enemy barraged us with scratched discs and nearly finished us off with their dreaded Red Rings of Death. It's a miracle I'm still here today.

I was wondering where all that Fortnite money was going since it certainly didn't go to the Epic Games Store.

I'M BACK / The Official The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword dunkathlon.
« on: August 16, 2020, 04:47:57 PM »
I think the Switch remake needs at least 8 more imprisoned fights. If it was so nice that we had to have it thrice than I say the more the merrier. Maybe we can even have a spin-off like Captain Toad where you just fight the imprisoned for 60 stages.

58
Apparently this game had an amazon listing at some point for Switch so let's talk about it. I gave my true thoughts minus the usual hyperbole I throw at this game and they are as follows:

Quote
Skyward Sword is the only 3D Zelda left that hasn't been remade already outside of BOTW and the Switch's joycons can accommodate that game's bizarre fascination with motion controls. Even as someone who despises that game with a passion, it does seem appropriate to remake it now.

Plus, this way more people will see how shitty that game was and it will have a lower barrier of entry since presumably this time it won't need an extra accessory like motion plus to play it.

What do you think? I for one am happy to have any opportunity to dunk on that game and I can't wait to see new players discover how shitty that game really is.

I'M BACK / The official give Crimm a new avatar thread.
« on: August 10, 2020, 02:30:04 AM »
Apparently he didn't like the Canada Goose one we gave him so I guess we're going back to the drawing board. I say we go back to my brilliant idea of giving him an Ace of Seafood avatar with the new custom title: The Funhouse Cod.

60
I've been watching through Mystery Inc recently. It's bizarre how good this show is. I just got to the second season and this show is just incredible.

61
Well, guess I'll just order the part of my GBA solution that we aren't allowed to talk about on the forums bc it's against the rules instead.

Backlaugust: The Official Negative World Nintendo World Report Month for Decimating Backlogs!™ is back again for more action! So start looking through your backlog and get started!

Here are the "rules":

Games can be on any system, not just Nintendo systems. I know we're a Nintendo fan site, but most everyone here is a multi-console owner. So play a game on any system you want.

Let us know what you're playing. Mostly just so we can cheer each other on.

Play games you already own. A lot of people tend to buy a game then not play it, or play it for a significant amount of time and then put it down. This is what we're aiming for. Games that launch in August don't count.

Try to pick up games you aren't actively playing right now. Games you're currently playing can be allowed, but in the spirit of Backlaugust, let's try to make them games you aren't playing at the moment. Make it a game you haven't touched in a month or more if possible.

When is a game done? That's up to you! Mark a game off your backlog when you've seen the ending or end credits, or once you've seen enough of the game in a game without a "proper ending" (like an arcade-type game). You don't have to do or get everything unless you want to.

Finished games will be posted in the OP. Because everyone likes to see their accomplishments recognized. Just post when you're done and I'll try to update daily.

It appears that some loser named Pokepal148 has stolen my totally 100% original idea and run some kind of knock off version of Backlaugust on Negative World. (you have to have an account there to view the Negative World Thread unfortunately.) Let's try to complete more games than those folks in Negative World. This also means that myself, Mop it Up and Guillaume on the NWR staff will be unable to contribute to either side since we are active in both communities. Instead, anything we complete will be counted as a bonus for the totals on both sides.

In honor of today's Forum maintenance, I am declaring today to be broken avatar day. Everyone get their favorite broken image link avatar and let's have some fun!

Edit: Man. I'm getting so much participation from this. Way better than Khush's lame Animal Crossing avatar thing.

64
I'm replaying Stardew Valley on PC now that I have access to mods. It's a real hoot.

And I guess those folks on Mac and Linux can tag along as here well. Otherwise Insanolord might get lonely in the Mac Gaming thread.

This laptop I'm using is surprisingly competent at gaming considering it's 10 years old now. I've been playing a bunch of stuff on it and I even picked up a SteelSeries controller for it. But I'm planning to keep this laptop going for at least a year or two and we'll go from there.

My Steam Friend Code (Jesus Christ, is there no escape from Friend Codes?) is 115591001 for anyone interested.

I'd like to report a spambot that's been running rampant in the discord for the past year. He's really annoying and he needs to go away.

68
What the ****?! I finally took the time to look into this and just WTH is going on here?

It doesn't help that there isn't really a good summary of what's happening because everything is going to be out of date immediately.

But suffice to say, there are a bunch of allegations against major people in the FGC community and it's really ugly.

I'M BACK / Now disa (and has always been) podracing!
« on: June 29, 2020, 01:22:06 AM »
Da nintendo 64 was a glorious system per star wars games.  Nearly every star wars game released on da platform has gone neb in history as a pivotal title.  Episode 1: racer  nosa excepteon.  Originally released in 1999 per not only da nintendo 64, but also da sega dreamcast and microsoft windows, fed off da hype surrounden da starten of da star wars prequels.  It allowed us to experience an expanded view of disa new star wars timen period while been a darn good futuristic racer to boot.  Aspyr has brought disa classic title to switchen and while da port itself may besa pretty baren bones, racer  still holds tup as an absolutely thrillen racen game.

let’s getsa una then out of da way right off da baten.  Star wars episode 1: racer in switchen  not a remastah or a remake, tis a port.  Da resoluteon been upped and it runs more good den it ever did on previous platforms, but at its core tis still a game designed wit da limitations of da nintendo 64 in mind.  While it was always a perfectly good looken nintendo 64 game, seeen it in hd does maken da neb poly environments stand out.  Da characters (who  seen regularly between races)  perhaps da most bad offenders hair.  Jar jar  even more of a nightmare creature hair den hesa usually.  Even den, not everytten from da original even maken da transiteon.  Reflective surfaces such as da windshield of anakin’s podracer don’t display correctly.  In fact daysa looken berry similar to how daysa appeared in da pc port, which also displayed themsa incorrectly.  Una minor graphical improvement was made to maken da tethers between da cockpit and da engines a litta more thin.  It's a nice changen dat maken themsa looken a litta less ridiculous in hd and una dat  not presenten in previous versions.  Assumen yousa updaten da game to verseon 1. 0. 1 you’ll also getsa reworked menu elements dat hold tup more good against da hd visuals.

noten: disa comparison uses verseon 1. 0 which used a more low resoluteon hud and was missen lens flairs.  These issues  corrected in verseon 1. 0. 1

as per actual gameplay star wars episode 1: racer  as good as ever.  Da bulk of da gameplay focuses around a series of grand prixs.  At da starten you’ll have access to a small selecteon of pod racers but wit each racen una you’ll adden to yous collecteon.  Each of these can also besa upgraded by usen da mula earned from winnen races.  Disa means dat even if you’re liken mesa and yous favorite racer  dud bolten (who  objectively da most bad in da game) yousa can worken yous way tup to greatness.  Races progress nicely in difficulty and offeren mui of variety.  Almost all of themsa have held tup excellently wit perhaps da excepteon of those wit zero gravity segments.  These segments  just as janky as ever and  a big annoyance whenever daysa come tup.  Luckily dalee  only a few tracks dat includen themsa throughout da game.  Da una changen to gameplay comes in da formen of optional moteon controls.  These worken well enough but only affect turnen and not pitch.  Vertical control comes into effect not only in zero gravity segments, but also when launchen off ramps.  When usen moteon controls, you’ll still needen to gos backen tada analogue stick to adjust pitch, which  a strange omisseon.

those looken to playen a nintendo 64 classic on a modern system will have a bombad timen wit star wars episode 1: racer on switchen.  However, those looken per any significant updates be left wanten.  Disa  a berry straightforward port of a game from 1999.  Moteon controls  its most substantial updaten and daysa ultimately failen to impressen.  Dat been said, even da most baren bones port leaves us wit an amazen racen game wit gameplay dat has excellently stood da testen of timen
