Here's a quick comparison of the older screen and the newer screens.

The gun in the old screen shot.

New screen's gun.

Old giant bugs.

New bugs with environment map bump mapping. Not to mention you can compare the gun again.

Please someone convince me NOT to buy this game.

Who else is a fan of the original NES game? I know I loved it. Here's a review from the usual place I'd like to pimp.

After reading countless silly reviews talking about how great the animation was in the GBA Fire Emblem, a friend of mine got fed up and decided to write an article dissecting the animation. Being one of the few people out there who understands his point, we teamed up and wrote a nice little article showing the ugliness of the GBA FE animation. I hope you guys enjoy.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Soma Bringer: MonolithSoft's Latest RPG

Soma Bringer has arrived and I was able to play a good 2 hours of the game. I guess that should be enough for a quick little hands-on preview. I stayed away from all information so I could experience a minty fresh game. Despite the short playtime, the game’s focus on customization was immediately apparent.

To begin, you choose from a selection of characters. All of them will be a part of your team, so you’re just picking who you’d like to control. The characters are Crono, Sephiroth Jr, Jay Leno on steroids, and a couple of other characters. They look rather uninspired, so I didn’t bother naming them. There’s suppose to be another girl too, but for some reason, she’s greyed out. Oh well, I wanted to play as Crono anyway. Once you pick your character, you get to pick their class, weapons, and even adjust their starting stats a bit. After that, I was treated to some beautiful music while watching a meteor crash into the forest.

Sephiropth Jr wants to hold a big orgy party, but the team has an uneven male/female ratio, so they decided to go into the woods and hunt for an extra female. It is here that a morbidly obese sabre-toothed Care Bear appeared to explain the game. Most of it was pretty basic — except for the “Break” function in combat. I know what it does, but I don’t know how to do it, or the intricacies involving this function. The combat plays like Secret of Mana. You only control whomever you picked, while the computer controls the other two members. At least they aren’t as brain-dead as the idiots of Mana. The camera zooms in whenever you swing your weapon at an enemy. My only concern right now is the speed of my swing. There’s a delay after every swing. Luckily, there appears to be skills that’ll increase the speed of each swing, but by how much, I still don’t know.

So far, I haven’t seen any unique uses for the touch-screen. You play on the top, while the bottom displays a map and your custom moves (more on this later). The map itself is very useful and detailed, so it’s very handy. I don’t know if there are other uses for the touch-screen, but I suspect this map is there for Wi-Fi multiplayer co-op (don’t know if this is actually a feature, it‘s just my guess).

As I said from the beginning, this game focuses heavily on customization, and boy, did they ever load up on options. When you level up, you’re given stats, but it’s up to you distribute them. Not only that, but you also get points to level up your combat skills and magic. Increasing them to level 1 will allow you to assign some combat skills to the Y, X, and B buttons. Right now, I only have the low ranking skills available for level up, but I also saw plenty of high rank skills available for me later. They were also organized by weapon type giving me a total of 64 different skills — although some of the skill slots are empty.

After much exploring, we finally found a huge glass container. Our heroes ponders the possibility of a naked girl confined in there. As if the heavens heard their cries, it unleashed a power with the might of a hundred sumo wrestlers after gouging on pork and beans. The mighty explosion shattered the glass tube, releasing a nude maiden a la Ace Ventura When Nature Calls. “It’s orgy time,” exclaimed Jay Leno on steroids, as they all gathered around to celebrate.

When I finally reached the first chapter, I am given the freedom to explore. My first order of business was to kick the crap out of the local flora and fauna. I have a hunch there is no over world to travel through in this game. I saw what I suspect to be a teleporter/travel point on the bridge of the ship. It could be there just for quick travels, though. It’s only a hunch, so I could be very wrong about this. I know there are teleporters that allow you to go to town and other areas quickly. By the way, it seems that all the villagers have a habit of locking their doors to keep you out. So no pillaging homes for treasure. You buy items from vendors in a marketplace, or in your ship.

After adding a mondo penguin into the endangered species list, I happened upon some mortally wounded people, and I processed to pilfer their wallets. Or at least I wish I could have done that, but my stuffed up nose was bothering me, so I decided to stop playing for the day. What I’ve played so far seems to be a fairly decent game. It has good atmosphere with a nice soundtrack, and sweet graphics. I don’t know if there is more to the customization, but what I saw was already fairly extensive. All this game needs now is an engaging plot, and the skill level ups to not turn this into a monotonous grind-fest. Oh, and in case you still haven’t figured it out, I was making the plot up as I go along.

So, how does one go about advertising a blog to others? I mean, place has it's own material, and certainly more game reviews and previews by the owner than Gonintendo. He doesn't have time to do anything else but play games and write about them. I did have a hand in inspiring this place, so I'd like to see it become somewhat of a success. Randomly posting the blog to tell people to read it is too shameless. You guys mind if I post news here whenever Cow Cow has a new review/preview up?

11
Seriously, what the heck? I figured the DS would still be the talk of the town with all the great games coming out. Ah well, might as well liven up with a Soma Bringer preview. Is nobody interested in this game?

Is JOY Wang somehow related to Sima Wang?

14
Thatguy, I'm not the owners of the blog. I just wrote a preview for RF2. Also, I have no idea what you're talking about. Gonintendo never took all the pictures and posted them on the site. They also just post 1 picture and leave the rest to the link. When they do post all the pictures, they actually were given to them by Nintendo.

What do you guys think about the reviews? My friend only received feedback from me, and he's too busy to pimp the place. I just got off of AIM and he's complaining about playing Professor Layton, Professor Layton 2, Barnyard Blast, Ninja Gaiden 3, Harvest Moon Shining Sun, and Advance Wars DOR all at the same time WHILE trying to write reviews and previews for all those games (and VC games Harvest Moon and Kirby 64). He's playing 6 different games at once while trying to write 8 different things. He must be so lucky to play so many games.

Pale - You don't mind that I submit NWR news to my friend's blog, right? If so, I'll continue to show him stuff whenever I see them.

15
Ok, I noticed that people are actually complaining about Gonintendo linking to reviews, which I honestly found baffling. I mean, they're basically giving you extra traffic. You see, my friend has a blog that the 2 of us dreamed up, but I was the one who convinced him to link to other site's reviews. I honestly didn't think it was any harm or consider it stealing when it's tell you who's reviewing it and not grabbing the entire thing and letting you read it at his blog. And yes, I gave him links to NWR stuff.

Anyway, my point is: what is considered stealing? He does have his own reviews and previews. He's busy playing games to write up and catch up with whatever he can get to build up the site. The news posting is there to make it more lively.

Also, any tips on what you think would make a good blog? My friend's blog is interested in being... CRAZY. The motto is being the most unprofessional gaming news site on the web. Our dream is to do just use it as a place to express our opinions while building up a fanbase for fun.

http://handheldwii.wordpress.com/

Anyway, take a look at his Contra 4 review, or even some of his import reviews to get a feel of what he's trying to do. I wrote the Rune Factory 2 preview (which I was pimping in the handheld section of NWR anyway).

The swearing was there to give the site a bit more personality. If you readthe banner, you'll notice it says "the most unprofessional news site on the web." It's his motto. You should see his Contra 4 review or the recent Lord of Thunder. I don't think there's any swearing (or perhaps I didn't notice it), but read them to get a sample of what crazy personality he's trying to inject into it.

Lords of Thunder - http://handheldwii.wordpress.com/2008/02/23/virtual-console-lords-of-thunder-review/#more-100

The Contra 4 review's my favorite. The guy's a regular Fawful. And yes, some of those "typos" are intentional.

As for the typo in my preview... ARGHHHH! I swear I had like 20 people look it over for me knowing that I'm a bad proofreader. They found some mistakes, but didn't spot that one!

It's cool. Hopefully, they'll market the game through Wii connect at the VERY least. I mean, that is the place where people will buy the game anyway.

Nope, I wouldn't buy it. It doesn't have appeal to me. At least Rogue Squadron has the appeal of the Star Wars franchise. I guess it wouldn't hurt if the made another Star Wars game based on Episode 1-3. I mean, those movies sucked, but it would be nice to see something different, yet still Star Wars.

What are you trying to say: Graphics or Demographics? Metal of Honor Heroes 2 sold rather well. It wasn't a blockbuster by any means, but the game itself wasn't exactly blockbuster material either.

If you're talking about graphics, just remember the Gamecube can do this:

Now imagine what someone like F5 can do with my RAM, and twice the speed. Now license out the technology, and you'll get plenty of respectable looking games on the Wii.

I know I'm sold on the idea!

It wouldn't be bad for Factor 5 to make a FPS on the Wii though. With some competent graphics engine, and well done Wii aiming (just rip off MOHH2) and the Wii could easily rival the 360 as the shooter machine of choice. Of course, that is provided Factor 5's engine is licensed to other developers. As long as it provides good graphics, and is meant to be licensed out to other, it doesn't even matter if the gameplay is good. F5 could just use it as a demo to attract other developers who are too lazy to do anything other than port their PS2 engines over.

I'm looking at you, Red Steel 2.
