I still own my copy of Ogre Battle 64 and my Nintendo 64 to run it.  But my TV's input jacks are completely full between my DVD player; Wii; computer; and PS2 so I have nowhere I could put my N64 even if I wanted play it.  Plus, if it gets put on Wii I can play the game with a wireless controller in component video.

Hopefully, this is a sign that Square-Enix is thinking about putting more of their lesser-known stuff out there.  Wasn't Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together released in Japan as well?  Sadly, I highly doubt we'll get that one, as S-E would have to localize it since I'm not sure if the Playstation version ever made it over here.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

I don't expect to see that one this generation. Games that used the Super FX Chip or the Expansion Pak were reportedly do not emulate well so we may never see them.

I wonder what the problem is, I've played Star Fox in emulation through the Homebrew Channel and it seemed to run just fine, Yoshi's Island too.

That's because the emulator programmers put the time in to figure it out.  Nintendo probably hasn't bothered with it for VC.

I'd guess Nintendo doesn't consider it worthwhile to develop Super FX support for such a small number of titles.

Why doesn't Nintendo leverage open source code here? They seem to do it for Wii drivers, etc. Are they afraid doing so would somehow legitimize illegal ROMs?

EDIT: To answer my own question: ZSNES is open source free but for x86 architectures only and under the GPL--not so useful for PowerPC architectures or commercial software. SNES9x is multi-platform, but is not "free". (Nintendo would have to pay royalties if they wanted to use that technology.)

GPL is restrictive, you have to provide the sourcecode to anyone who asks and that could prove risky if they want to use Wii-specific trade secrets. Might even force them to opensource the whole Wii SDK if they want to use GPL code.

That's highly unlikely if the theory that each VC download includes the emulator is correct.  That makes each one clearly a standalone app.  Regardless, I'm sure ZSNES gets down and dirty with the assembly for all the important parts, so porting it to PowerPC wouldn't be any easier than starting from scratch.

Yes but the SDK includes libraries that are most likely used in the coding of the emulator and you cannot use GPL code until all libraries and such are GPL too. Since the Wii doesn't really have an OS that acts as a hardware abstraction layer most of the hardware interface stuff is in the actual game code and anything in that code must be GPLed which would force a GPL release of the hardware interface stuff.

Negative? We're talking about why SuperFX support may be too tall an order for Nintendo. If Nintendo doesn't think they'll sell enough copies of SuperFX games to make it worth their while, of course they aren't going to pay for the R&D. I don't think anyone is criticizing anyone here, except perhaps the nature of GPL-licensed software.

I don't see how it could be too expensive to be worth it if it's been done by people in their spare time who make no money off of it.

Looks the same here, apparently it was enough to dupe the stores who've market the regular 2000 points up to 25€ into selling this one at 20...

I know what you guys are talking about, what I was trying to say was that basicly everything you guys said was a negative because it prevents star fox from releasing again. Not that it is negative, that make sense kinda?

We're talking about hobbyists here.  People will spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours to do for fun things that could never be profitable, whether they're making console emulators, giant air cannons, or rocket-propelled model X-Wings.

Time to derail the thread for a bit.

rocket-propelled model X-Wings.

I couldn't believe until I googled it. It sure has been a long time since I've browsed Gizmodo.

They are crazy. Not for building these things, but for having those crowds so close to get hit by falling debris, and in both instances (x-wing and y-wing) you could see that someone was about to get hit by something.

I came home and saw the Wii glowing. I figured it was another Mario Kart tournament or something and left it alone. I just turned on the system and checked the message and it's actually info about a World of Goo contest being run by Game Trailers- they're offering a good cache of goods too. Basically I think this is real cool news that I never would expect. Did anyone else catch this?
