Just before Startropics 2 was released on VC, I finished Startropics 1. I was so stoked that I decided to download 2 right away. Didn't read any reviews or anything, I just downloaded. I played and loved the original, but never had a chance to try the sequel. This was my chance.
It completed downloading, and I immediately fired it up.
COULD NOT BE MORE DISAPPOINTED. That idyllic island setting of the first, the bizarre sense of humor in the writing and unique weapons, the bizarre play control... it had all combined to make an experience that just
oozed personality and was, for me, simply magical. And in the second? Gone. All of it, gone.
In place of the unique island setting and a cool submarine that we got to pilot around, we are thrust jarringly into generic/stereotypical snow, desert, etc. locations that you stay in for the shortest periods of time, developing no sort of connection to any of the potentially interesting characters with the unnecessary and also-generic gimm!ck of traveling through time. Well, whoopedy-doo. Oh, wait, we get to meet "famous characters in history" like an idiotic, pizza-eating Cleopatra? DON'T CARE. Give me the bumbling-but-perseverant, raft-rowing Baboo over any any famous historical figure you could possibly think up. Instead of his famous yo-yo, Mike gets an... axe*? And mind-bullets? Excuse me, but...
Huh??? Also gone are the enemies with unique patterns and behaviors... most things just weave stupidly around at you. A few shoot projectiles of condensed stupidity.
Oh, wait, control is improved? Ah, ok! I'd kinda gotten used to the quirks of the old controls, but who wouldn't be up for "improved controls?" Oh... so the new scheme takes any sort of precision out of the equation? And I'm now required, since I have "better controls," to do trickier-yet-less-precise platforming? Yay, frustration!
Sorry guys. Sometimes lightning really doesn't strike twice. It's less puzzley, more un-fun actiony... What they've done here feels forced, and completely devoid of the magic that the first one possessed.
Huge, HUGE disappointment right here.
* Oh, I forgot, it's Bobo's Axe, or something like that. Like that makes it all better.
