New DLC for WiiWare's My Life as a King
« on: June 30, 2008, 07:02:43 PM »
New dungeons, features, abilities, and costumes are available. An eight-block file size suggests that this content isn't merely being unlocked.

Along with the usual Monday releases of new titles for Nintendo's WiiWare or Virtual Console services, this week also sees the release of new downloadable content (DLC) for owners of the WiiWare title Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King.

Square Enix's WiiWare launch title had downloadable features, dungeons, races and buildings at launch, but this is the first new content made available for the game since then. There are five new downloads available which offer some interesting new features, dungeons, abilities and costumes previously unavailable for the game.

  • Infinity Spire – 300 Wii Points, 8 Blocks – The Infinity Spire download adds 2 dungeons to the game. This includes the Infinity Spire, which gains levels and becomes more difficult every time it is cleared, offering a continuous challenge to end-game adventurers.
  •
  • Castle Renovation – 100 Wii Points, 8 Blocks – Castle Renovation adds a jukebox option to the castle, as well as the ability to rename your kingdom's adventurers. But in order to gain access to these features, you'll have to beat one added dungeon: the Tempora Estuary.
  •
  • Library – 200 Wii Points, 8 Blocks – If adventurers can clear the new Land of O'Kokuh dungeon, they'll be able to build libraries that teach adventurers race-specific abilities.
  •
  • New Royal Outfit 2 – 100 Wii Points, 3 Blocks – This download unlocks a casual summer wear outfit for the player's young king character.
  •
  • New Chancellor Outfit 2 – 100 Wii Points, 3 Blocks – This download unlocks an outfit suited for the beach and "tropical climates" for Chime, the king's female chancellor.
  •

Previously, the largest file size for any DLC package in the game was 3 blocks. This caused some concerns as to whether the content was really being downloaded to the game, or merely unlocked. However, some of these new downloads are 8 blocks in size, significantly larger than previous downloads. This suggests that these new features are actually new content being downloaded to the game instead of merely codes used to unlock pre-existing content.

With this new batch of DLC, if someone were to purchase every available addition to the title it could cost as much as 2400 Wii Points or $24.

I can resist the new outfits, but I cannot resist the race-specific abilities!

These could still just be unlock codes. Perhaps Square simply got wind of the players' suspicions and started adding garbage files to the pack to superficially increase size?

Maybe we'll eventually see a disc-based release of the game and all of it's DLC, as it's already quickly reaching that price point.

I'll be sad if I find out that Square is just stuffing files full of junk. I have few enough blocks open as it is!

Actually, FFCC:MLaaK is like, 90% scripted. If I recall correctly, a block for the Wii is 128kb, so 8 blocks might be enough for some simple script and data files to introduce new behavior to the game built from the basic functions that are already there.

You know though, that disc-based release is an interesting idea. But would Square release it for a discount over individual WiiWare prices? Would it be capable of downloading new DLC down the line?

I used this game to initially spend some leftover Wii Points.

Spending $25 to have steamy Selkie servants was all right.  Beyond Chancellor Chu-Mi and Selkie Smores, there isn't much excitement.  To pay $50 for "all of it" on a disc is a waste.  It's not "worthy" of a disc, especially when it's so convenient to play this without inserting its own disc after I'm tired of playing Brawl.

I'm surprised no one has reverse-engineered the DLC yet to put an end to this "is it just an unlock code" debate once and for all.

Assuming that a block in the Wii's file allocation system is 128KB, a block can be UPTO 128KB so 8 blocks can be up to 1MB, you have to remember if a whole block isnt used it still counts as one block. (For example a file that is 130KB the wii would read it as 2 blocks(128KB from block 1 and 2KB from block 2)). The good news is that if all these files are contained into one file which is the case of the FF:CC DLC then the unused space in those blocks will be filled. Like for example my DLC file is 2 blocks and I downloaded the race pack, luxurious house, shrines and extra dungeons.

Why does Nintendo use such a large cluster size for the file system?

Why does Nintendo use such a large cluster size for the file system?
To get block numbers that the average user can remember.
