One major difference would be that Nintendo would never let something as buggy as a lot of open world games are out the door.

Probably why we haven't seen a playable Demo yet.

No multiplayer, no buy. What a waste of potential.

The original Xenoblade already felt like a multiplayer game without a multiplayer option, so it could have easily had one without really changing anything. This new game sounds even more like it's suited for multiplayer, and yet it still doesn't seem to have it. It wouldn't detract from the game at all or change it in any way, so I don't know why it isn't present.

It might have local.  Adding online does make it more complicated.

Pretty much.  It's one thing to allow someone to pick up a controller and play one of the CPU characters while someone else is playing on the same TV, but another to allow a complete stranger online.  It's kind of hard to just allow random people to suddenly join someone else game online since everyone playing can be at completely different points in the story.

Yeah they could try and do some kind of online mode where the entire game map is opened up and people can run around like an MMO but that would require extra resources to do and the game just wasn't designed to be that.  At the end of the day, Monolith Soft is still making a single player JRPG and doing their best to make sure it excels at being just that.

I just meant from a coding point of view.  Not even thinking about gameplay.

They could just make it so that you join someone's "world" like many games do, which wouldn't be that difficult. I don't want it to be like an MMO or play with randoms, just people from my friend list.

Apparently on Friday, there will be a video presentation detailing more on Xenoblade Chronicles X. It's currently a Japan-only thing. This news was brought to attention from NeoGAF's L~A.
