Nintendo Gaming / RE: Colbert beats Pelosi with his Wii
« on: November 28, 2006, 07:39:17 AM »
Hey, Colbert has a ton of fans, and even if he was paid off, him stating that the Wii is the "number one threat this holiday season" surely can't hurt the Wii's image in the public eye. I'm all for it!

Thanks for the link to the vid

Nintendo Gaming / RE: gamecube troubles
« on: November 27, 2006, 05:41:38 PM »
Um, why would you tell a mom about your amazing tactics for gypping the store (and a future customer) out of their GameCube? That's really dishonest and not something I would be proud of.

It's a GameCube for crying outloud, not a Ferrari. What are you even doing on a Nintendo forum if you can't fork over a few measley bucks for a GameCube :P Heck, when my first GameCube stopped working and the problems resurfaced even after Nintendo "repaired" it, Nintendo sent me a new one for free. There's more than one recourse in the world than conning people for your own ends.

But hey, it's all fun and games until it happens to you.

General Gaming / RE: Why isnĀ“t anybody discussing Banjo-Kazooie 3?
« on: November 27, 2006, 09:39:19 AM »
I have ignored it because:

- I have no plans to buy a 360
- Virtually all of Rare's post-Nintendo offerings have sucked mightily or been mediocre at best (Grabbed By The Ghoulies, Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, etc)
- I loved B-K, but wasn't quite as charmed with B-T and was very unimpressed with how they handled the whole "Stop 'n Swop" fiasco (B-K fans will know what I'm talking about)
- I don't like the new art style

Of course, I'll be interested in seeing what kind of reviews it gets when it comes out a few decades from now on the Xbox 720, but for now I'm OK with giving bear and bird the cold shoulder.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:paying for VC games
« on: November 27, 2006, 07:26:10 AM »
The only reasons I have ever re-bought a game was that a) I lent the game out and it was never returned (happened once), or b) the re-release has substantial new content/features which merits a re-purchase, as with Yoshi's Island for GBA. So unless we start seeing some major revamping on the Virtual Console, which Nintendo has not explicitly stated as being part of their strategy, I won't be re-buying anything.

Anyway, comparing the Virtual Console prices to the cost of PC piracy is retarded. Any price that Nintendo sets is going to be "overpriced" compared to free piracy. :P

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Can anyone here make Miis correctly?
« on: November 27, 2006, 02:05:41 AM »
I've found that Miis are fun to make but the options are fairly limited. Sometimes it seems like none of the available mouths, noses, head shapes etc. seem to fit the person I am trying to make. I'm hoping some updates are provided eventually by Nintendo for more options... in the meantime, what I try to do is focus on the most prominent/defining aspect of that person's face and over-exaggerate it. It's actually pretty tough to figure out what that may be, especially if you've known the person for a long time and never really thought about what precise facial features it is that allows you to recognize that person. Creating Miis that look like their namesake is very subjective too, so I don't know if anyone could ever really create a step-by-step process or guide for it...

Nintendo Gaming / RE: paying for VC games
« on: November 27, 2006, 02:01:08 AM »
I'm pretty sure that the serial numbers on the boxes for a given game are not unique... so if Nintendo allowed you to add games to the VC that way, you could just give the serial number to all your friends (or worse yet, I can envision a giant online database being made with every game's serial number) so everyone else gets to add it for free too.

Even if Nintendo wanted to do this, there's just no way it would work, and gamers themselves don't have any reason to when they own the original games unless your game doesn't work anymore.

General Gaming / Can't turn the Wii off using the remote
« on: November 26, 2006, 07:55:09 PM »
I've found that I can't turn off my Wii console using the remote. I only have the one remote synced to the console, the one that came with the system, and I can use the power button on the remote to turn the console on, but for some reason it won't turn the console off. The Wii manual says on page 20 that "Only a Wii Remote in Standard Mode can turn the console power ON or OFF". My remote is synced via Standard Mode, and as I mentioned it will turn the console on, but not off. I have never even used any other remotes with this console. Has anyone else had this problem?

This apparently works for GameCube; maybe it will work for Wii too.

So me typing out Nintendo's official answer to this question is me "trying to lay the smack down"? That was not my intention at all and your attitude is uncalled for. I guess you should e-mail Nintendo then and let them know that the information they put into the Wii shopping guide is wrong, Mr. Expert.

This question has been answered in the Virtual Console thread. Copy/pasted from my post there:

As to this whole "Are the games upgraded on Virtual Console or not" debate... you don't have to play the games for proof that they're not; just read the last question in the "Q & A" section of the Wii Shopping Guide.

Quote

"Q: Are the games on the Virtual Console the same as the original games, or have they been enhanced?
A: Virtual Console games reproduce the game content, moves representation, etc. true to the original piece when it was released, and the basic program, characters, sound etc. have not been changed. While the porting of games from the original systems may result in minor changes to the game display, these changes do not affect game play."

However, note that another FAQ states that free, optional "Updates" may be available for certain games, although it does not get into what these updates will entail.

Well, this review asserts that there's no lag... I just ordered one to try for myself, so I'll let you all know what I think when I get it.

Thank you, Lord de seis, for the link

If the GameCube isn't working then the GBA connectivity won't work either. You might call Nintendo to see if they can repair your GameCube, but honestly, GameCubes are so dirt cheap these days that it might be easier, faster, and possibly cheaper to just go buy a new one.

In any case, check out Nintendo's Customer Service website for GameCube, look over the available options and hopefully you can determine how to proceed from there. Hope this helps.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Zelda Soundtrack
« on: November 26, 2006, 12:54:07 PM »
Cool deal, thanks for the heads-up.

Also, if any of you are interested in the Zelda soundtrack but don't want to tempt yourselves by buying the guide, you can buy this collectible Zelda sword/shield replica set which comes with the exact same soundtrack... only downside is it costs $40 bucks, but total Zeldanerds might want this stuff anyway. Just thought I'd mention it.

Edit: Dangit, I made this post before I noticed this thread had 2 pages. Sorry btw, Ceric, the soundtracks for the NP offer and the replica set are identical.

Personally I wouldn't want to the run the risk just to mess around with Google on the Wii. I realize people want to see if they can do it just to prove it can be done, but I wouldn't want to invoke the wrath of Nintendo. Reggie might take my name...

QFT. I couldn't possibly disagree more with Sony's greedy approach to the industry (yay let's force our blu-ray player on gamers who don't care about blu-ray in another vain attempt to ensure the success of our proprietary formats) or their disdain for their loyal fanbase. I would require payment to blaspheme my house by owning a PS3.

Behold the sh*t-eating grin of the unkempt masses with too much expendable income. "HAHA I BROEK MY DS I'LL JUST GO BY ANOTHER 1 LOL!!"

I've gotten frustrated at many a game in my time but never threw a controller, broke a game or anything that stupid. Oh well, at least he broke his own DS and not somebody else's.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Yoshi's Island DS
« on: November 25, 2006, 01:31:45 PM »
I have Yoshi's Island DS, and am currently half-way through world 5. Pretty good stuff so far (and some very challenging levels in there), but as mentioned earlier this game is very reminiscient of the original Yoshi's Island, not that that's a bad thing.

Pros:

- Same solid sidescrolling gameplay
- Throwing eggs feels the same (thank God)
- Changing babies to achieve different goals is usually fun, clever, and well-executed
- Art style is different enough to feel fresh but not too different

Cons:

- I don't like the music as much as the music in Yoshi's Island... just not as catchy and upbeat
- THEY TOOK OUT ITEMS!! wtf. On the one hand, this makes the levels a lot harder because you actually have to finish with 30 stars to get 100%... can't just whip out the "+20 stars" item. However, I don't understand why they had to do this. In the first game, you only had to get to the end with all 30 stars on the boss levels... now you have to do it with every level. On the other hand, this adds an extra (albeit annoying) degree of challenge... so if you're into that, move this to the "pros" list.
- You can't push Chomp Rocks at the speed of light and gain ultra momentum, they only go a very slow top speed (minor complaint)
- There is the occasional "Donkey Kong 64" moment when you see an item you can't get, realize you have the wrong baby and it's too late to change to the right one. VERY IRRITATING when this happens since every level has a character coin and you have to have the right baby to collect it. Having the wrong baby at the time usually means you will have to play through the whole level again just to get it.
- Maybe it's just me but it seems like there are lots more "points of no return" in this game than the original. e.g. You go to the next room, and you can't go back... or you fall down a cliff and can't get back up once you're down there. Again, not a huge deal but it gets irritating when you realize you're not going to get 100% because you saw two ways to go and chose the wrong way.

I haven't beaten the whole game yet but what I've seen so far is good overall and I'd say it's definitely worth a purchase for any fan of the original.

I thought only Japan was getting a DVD-equipped Wii..? I keep seeing conflicting reports on this subject.

Anyway, I'd just go ahead and get a Wii now, if you can. Don't give in and plunk down hundreds on eBay for one though; just pick one up in the stores when you get the chance. Zelda alone is worth it, Wii Sports is cool, and if you don't have a DVD player by now you probably won't be missing that aspect in the event that any regions outside of Japan end up getting this feature.

And if you're waiting because you think Nintendo are going to offer us a price-drop within just a couple months of launch, you might as well just get one now... the Wii is selling like hotcakes and personally I don't think we'll see a price-drop for sometime. $249 is already a very reasonable price, especially compared to the alternatives, so why not?

Reason I'm asking is I've been asked to bring in my Wii for my school's next SGDA's (Student Game Developers Association) meeting and I'm not sure but we might use a Projector so everyone can see it.  We'll be doing a comparison of the PS3 and Wii so having the Wiimotes not functioning correctly would be very very bad.

The problem people are reporting is that the sensor bar cord isn't very long. For those who have a projector mounted at the back of a room, it might be a stretch to get the cord to reach all the way from the projector to the screen where the sensor bar is placed.

Try to find out how far the screen is from the projector if you can, and hopefully you shouldn't have problems if you plug the Wii into the projector, move the Wii as close to the screen as possible, then plug the sensor bar into the Wii and move it as close as possible as well.
