TalkBack / RE:EA Announces Goldeneye 2

The controls in everything or nothing aren't even customizable.

When I think of EA, I get vague feelings of disgust.

TalkBack / RE:Game Developer's Choice Award nominees announced

"Not quite as many Developers Choice nominations for Nintendo this year, but still not bad. Last year Metroid Prime was Game of the Year, I wonder if The Wind Waker can make it 2 in a row?"

KOTAR will provide some very stiff competition.

KOTAR was full of bugs and lacked polish, but I think they did a better job with the overall story and gameplay.

Maybe.  I couldn't decide between them right now.

I really want to play Metroid 2 on the GBA.  I see little reason to port SNES games to the GBA (except for the new generation).

My most likely friend who would play the game with me does not have a GBA and hates portables.  Sucks.

I need to make new friends.

TalkBack / RE:Third Parties Start Pledging DS Support
« on: January 24, 2004, 09:26:18 AM »
Konami has *always* been very generous with Castlevania.  You can find Castlevania on pretty much every major system to date (and a lot of non major ones).  Here's the list:  MSX, NES, Commodore 64, Amiga, Arcade, Gameboy, SNES, TG16, X68000, PSX, Saturn, N64, GBA, PS2 and a cancelled Dreamcast game.  The only notable systems missing from the list are the latest ones (GameCube and XBox).  However, the DS being primarily a 2d system (count on it) I think we can expect a Castlevania game.

Unlike GBA/GCN connectivity which requires two systems and can be a real pain in the ass, I can really see a lot of developers being excited about working on this system.  That would be good.

I can almost see another two castle game (like HoD) with one castle on one screen and one on the other.  As for what gameplay purposes that would serve... I'll leave that up to IGA (but the possibilities are enormous (though some of my ideas are admittedly ridiculous and unplayable).

I think this will be a cool system.

I agree.  Two horizontal rectangles stacked vertically.  The answer to Billy's question made it clear that they would be stacked vertically, and I think common sense dictates that they would be horizontally oriented.

well, that's why THEY are game designers and WE (especially YOU) are not.

i know every detail of your life from what you post here, and thus i can determin you definatly lack the skills and mental fortitude required to even consider designing games.

pook has gained: +23 arrogance point(s), ++1 post count point(s)

personally i'll be down if they include some form of mp3 playback, even if it's minor, and if this features GBA support (hopefully) the second screen could be used to have funky ID3 tag scrolling or some such, as for games, Metroid screen one Map screen two, DS Wars screen one, Statistics and Data Screen two. oh hay, i guess i'm a games designer now rhhrhr

For all of those arrogance points, you didn't do much better my friend.

Imagine a game with an AI character somewhere doing something without your control.  You could use the second screen to keep an eye on him (for any number of reasons).

Taking current games and putting the pause menus on the second screen is not very innovative (though I'm sure it will happen more than once).

I'm going to try and answer some of those questions...

How are the screens arranged?    According to an email sent out to certain people on some American Nintendo list... they will be arranged "vertically".  Does this mean that the screens will be vertical, or horiztonal and stacked one on top of the other.  It sounds like the latter... I think no other set up woudl make sense.  I imagine a traditional GBA setup with a GBA SP like flop top for the second screen (which would certainly have the weaker of the two processors, the ARM7).

Can it link up for multiplayer?  Almost certainly.

Can two people play on the same unit?  Almost certainly not.  Just imagine a second guy trying to play on a screen that another guy is holding/moving.

Does it play Game Boy games?  No.

Is it designed for 3D graphics?  With an ARM9 and ARM7, no more than the GBA I would think.

TalkBack / RE:Iwata Comments on Nintendo Next Generation
« on: January 12, 2004, 12:42:26 PM »
"the current systems have basically reached their limits"

I strongly disagree.  Obviously he's not talking about graphics because that is clearly wrong.  He's talking about gameplay, and I still think he's wrong.  I mean, you can obviously do things on the GameCube that could not be done on the N64 (games like Pikmin are a good example).  You might be able to do just about anything that you can aimgine with a GameCube, but the graphics would become so horribly limited with certain ideas, that it would not be worth doing.

Graphics do not make a game, but bad graphics (really bad ones) can ruin a game.  Especially if they are bad for the time period (old games don't look as good as current ones, but with good art, they can stand the test of time as classics).

Despite this, I'm sure that Nintendo will release a new console that is basically a GameCube with better tech (and maybe a few bells and whistles as this device (whatever it is) seems to imply).

Now if only Nintendo would realize that online gaming is on the verge of exploding...  yeah, it might be hard to make money with it, but that doesn't change the fact that people love it.

I think it works so much better when a developer simply describes what each difficulty mode is like.  Metal Gear Solid 2 and Halo both employ this method (and perhaps some other games) to good effect.

There's no need to get all fancy.

I bought POP shortly after it came out but I haven't even started playing it yet.  I could have not bought it and bought it now and gotten a free game I don't want (if I want any version of splinter cell, I want the original xbox version anyway; but I specifically wanted the gamecube versoin of pop).

Sound like a horrible soundtrack.  I hate contemporary music in games (especially in that genre of music).  Makes me want to get the XBox version (assuming they have the make your own play list thing).

I used to try and beat Super Metroid as fast as possible.  I know I got my time to below 2 hours, but maybe even lower than that.  Maybe 1 hour, my memory is a bit fuzzy.  If you remember that beating Super Metroid in one hour is basically a physical impossibilty, then it probably is.

There were a lot of cool short cuts in that game though!

Damn.  Didn't see this coming.

Well, Billy, I just want to wish you the best and also say (to others here) that Game Informer is actually a pretty cool mag.  Babbages and other stores in the chain always try to con you into getting one because if you do, you get a discount card to spend on used games as well.  My subscription paid for itself easily.

Even after years of using the internet, there's still something nice about having a magazine on your hands (especially since I really don't follow the other consoles very closely, even though I own a PS2).

Damn again.

Best of luck to you.

Yeah, I think they should have gone a little darker and more metallic looking ala Metroid Prime.  Plus she looks like she's just standing around waiting for McDonald's to cook a burger or something.

Ever wonder how many people die each day in various accidents in our country alone?  I don't have statistics, but it's probably more than seven.  In that light, it's hard for me to understand the way the world handles this kind of tragedy.  I don't understand how these deaths are more tragic than any other (which is not to say that it isn't tragic at all, just that I'm numb to it now).

I still remember the Challenger.  I was about 6 y/o in kindergarden, and we had the dividing wall opened between the classroom so everyone could watch.  We were just little kids and I suppose most of us (I did at least) thought it was part of the show.  All the teachers were crying though.  It's a strange memory.

TalkBack / Castlevania CotM Remix
« on: September 29, 2002, 05:38:07 PM »
Like Castlevania music and electric guitars?  You came to the right place.

As many of our readers may remember, around E3 PGC made many mentions of OverClocked.org because the beautiful remixes found therein were used throughout our E3 2002 DVD.  Since then, I've been wanting to create some remixes of my own.

*cliché warning*

Fast-forward a few months and I've just finished my third remix (the first two were not GBA or GameCube related so they weren't posted here).  I originally intended to finish this remix in time for the release of Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance, but forces conspired against my free time forcing me to delay its release until now.

Rude Awakening.mp3 (4.2 MB)

If this is your first exposure to video game remixing, be sure to check out VG Mix and OverClocked for more of the same.  You can find my previous two remixes at VG Mix, but you'll have to explore the site to find them (my user name is Rize).

TalkBack / Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance
« on: September 26, 2002, 11:16:06 AM »
Who said the GBC sound synth can't churn out some sweet tunes?

The games in the Castlevania series have always been known for their excellent and memorable tunes, and Harmony of Dissonance is no exception.  While it's true that the game directs most of the GBA's available power towards graphics rather than music, the composer did an excellent job despite this.  After all, some of the best music in video game history was done using the NES's inferior chips.

First up we have the game's first BGM (and one of the few BGM's with an official name in the sound test): The Theme of Juste Belmont (662 K).

The second track is from the Marble Corridor.  Considering how memorable the Marble Corridor music from Symphony of the Night (PSX) was, this track had some big shoes to fill.  I'd say those shoes were filled nicely.  Marble Corridor (821 K)

The next theme is used in a few different parts of the castle.  It first crops up in the third major area you're allowed to fully explore: The Castle Treasury (547 K).

Finally, we have one more tune from the middle of the game.  This is from the right most portion of the castle in the area with the epic cloud background.  Behold The Chapel of Dissonance (537 K).

TalkBack / Greece bans video games
« on: September 03, 2002, 11:14:24 AM »
That's right.  If you're going to Greece any time soon, be sure you leave that GBA at home.

In an attempt to stop "illegal gambling", the government of Greece has passed a law that simply makes all video games illegal.

Naturally, Greek gamers are organizing protests and such to repeal the law, but in the mean time, travelers should be warned that bringing video games into the country may result in fines.

It's even illegal to play a game of chess over the Internet (of course, you can play chess using a board and actual pieces).

TalkBack / Secret Message Hidden in Super Monkey Ball 2
« on: August 27, 2002, 07:33:10 PM »
Seriously...  and some other wacky stuff.

As I was playing SMB2 a few hours ago, I noticed some odd bumps on Story level 1-3 (or Beginner 3 in Challenge Mode).  Upon closer examination, I suspected that it was Braille.  After about an hours worth of digging on the net, I had the message translated.

Not so fast!  First I have to bore you with the details of it's deciphering.  First of all, how do you tell which direction in the message is up?  It's just a bunch of dots!  Then there's the issue of spacing.  It was pretty confusing at first.  Then there was the problem that every website I found with the Braille Alphabet assumed that I didn't need to know punctuation... but fortunately I found a translator that converts stuff you type into Braille which allowed me to figure out the code for punctuation.  Exciting stuff eh?  Now... onto the secret message.

Hi!  This is Jamad. That is right. Braille Alphabet. I respect you !!

Yep, that's the secret message.  Aren't you glad you didn't spend an hour and a half of your time figuring that out?  I looked for "Jamad" in the SMB2 credits but didn't find him.  It must be a nickname (or a bad joke).  I would guess that he's a level designer, or someone else who could directly change the level structure.  It's doubtful that anyone else would have done it for him!

As for the other wacky stuff, a reader on the GameFAQs message board noticed that something is wrong with the name entry screen for Story Mode.  When you attempt to enter your name, you're going to have to make other plans if there is a lowercase "w" in your name.  Instead, the game has a duplicate lowercase "t".  Thanks to Andret Andrew at GameFAQs for pointing this out.

TalkBack / Miyamoto Signed
« on: August 08, 2002, 03:57:14 AM »
Want to bid on a North American copy of Super Mario Sunshine signed by the one and only Shigeru Miyamoto?

Nintendo of Canada is sponsoring a charity event whereby 10 copies of Super Mario Sunshine are being auctioned away at eBay's Canadian site.  Of course, these aren't just any old copies of SMS, they are signed by the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto himself.  Follow this link and bid at your own risk.

Note that only two of the auctions are available at the moment.  I'm guessing that the other eight auctions will be posted as these two end.
