Star Trek: Beyond - 6/10

This is actually the first Star Trek movie (or anything, really) that I've seen.

Well, it's certainly nothing like traditional Star Trek.  For comparison, you should at least try to watch Star Trek: First Contact. It is the most "actiony" of the pre-Abrams movies, but has a fantastic plot and character development. Most fans consider First Contact to be the best Star Trek movie.

I thought Wrath of Khan was considered the best? Or is that just the best "original cast" films?

Yeah, I definitely don't think it's true that most fans consider it the best one, but it is very good and probably more approachable to non-fans than the ones I'd consider better movies.

You're right.  I probably should have qualified that statement..."best one for non-fans" is more accurate (although I know a lot of Star Trek fans who like First Contact better than Wrath of Khan).

I'd personally put it behind Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country, although the latter is probably, of all the Star Trek movies, the one that most requires you to be a fan of the franchise to really appreciate. First Contact really nails the balance between action, accessibility and quality in a way no other Trek movie has, though, and I've shown it to quite a few people who weren't fans of the series who enjoyed it.

While Wrath of Khan is by far the best ST film, second and third place are very close with Undiscovered country and First contact respectively.

First Contact is really easy to get into for just about anybody. It doesn't require the audience to know any Star Trek in advance. It tells and shows you enough of the characters to get by and develop. The special effects are top notch and the action accompanying it is well done.

For me by default the latest Treks are in last place as they are just nonsensical messes that has little to do with Trek or their characters.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, I was surprised by how much I liked Beyond. I'd certainly put it ahead of several of the non-reboot movies Honestly, now that I think about it, it's fairly similar to First Contact in a number of ways.

I was thinking that Undiscovered Country was a solid #2, but thought my personal bias was clouding the matter. UC is my favorite Star Trek flick for nostalgic reasons. I always liked the original cast films better since I grew up with them.

First Contact seems to be the best Next Generations film, though I felt it was a bit redundant since Voyage Home already did the time travel thing. Although it is different enough to distinguish itself, especially since a lot of Trek episodes in all series have dealt with time travel.

There is no contest that First Contact is the Best TNG film. The rest are pretty horrid with Nemesis in the distance number two TNG slot.

First Contact being a Time Travel movie didn't hurt it at all, but Voyage Home had alot of great humour going for it as well as finishing off the "Trilogy". "Double dumbass on you!".

UC is a great swan song for OG Trek, something few series on any sort gets.

Generations was horrible... :/

UG was a nice swansong, but everytime I watch it I get a bit sad knowing they almost did one more with the OG Trek crew. Though perhaps that was for the best, allowing the series to end on a strong note instead of a weak fizzled out film (which would have also run the risk of being an "awful odd" if it followed the quality pattern).

I guess I feel Voyage was a more well rounded film because of all the great humor. I suspect part of that credit should be given to Leonard Nimoy, who directed it. It was also a much better output than Shatner's attempt. Though I have read a few of Shatner's Trek books, and it makes me much less surprised with the decisions made in Final Frontier.

And I actually enjoyed Generations as a whole, despite the flaws. I liked how it combined the two series for a hand-off to the Next Generation crew.

What? Star Trek 5 is great! It answers the ultimate question of why would God need a starship and is the only time I've ever cried from the song Row, Row, Row Your Boat. Do know hard that is to do?

The camping scene really is great, and Kirk's "I need my pain!" moment is as well, but pretty much everything else about that movie is awful. I'd still probably watch it again before Insurrection, though.

5 is basically a summary of Captain James T. Kirk's persona in a nutshell. Over the top acting, cheesy dialogue, "sexy" aliens, and and a main plot that examines the human need of "god". It really was the pinnacle of classic campy Star Trek.

Just got IV on dvd for the shatner&nimoy commentary but I didnt think it was insightful at all. They were fascinated with the filmmaking process like some old grandpas instead of giving anecdotes.

Anyways, <3 IV. It's the only one that gives the secondary crew an important role, which was my fave throwback in Beyond. Plus no one dies in IV, it's the cheeriest of all ST movies. So sad when Kirk's son dies of AIDS  :'(

Just got back from Kubo and the 2 Strings

This was a pretty good "Japanese" fantasy stop motion animation. Had a few laughs, some good action, and the required heartstrings tugging moment. The bad guys were actually kinda scary, and the quest, while handled quickly (less than a 2hr movie) was very Zelda-like in in scale in execution.

I thought IV was awesome growing up. Scotty trying to talk into the computer mouse...Spock and the punk kid on the bus...definitely cheery/funny stuff in there.  I'll probably see Beyond when it's available to rent.  I'm just not sure it's worth securing a babysitter for.

Thanks for the reminder that it's almost time for my re-watch of It Follows.  Fantastic movie and soundtrack.

VI struck the perfect balance between the "science" fiction and the campy humor of classic Trek. The only thing it was missing was some starship action scenes, but those were never really in the old series and the story didn't really need it.

The gist I got was it would be a mix of traditional orchestra and then synths. Mark seemed legitimately excited about what they were coming up with, so I'm optimistic this will have a better than normal soundtrack.

Sausage Party - 8.5/10
Probably one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. There were a couple times, especially in the end, where I was literally crying because it was so funny. If you haven't seen this yet, you need to question your life decisions.

Interesting. There was a video with Thor that popped up. It reminded me of What we Do in Shadows. Now, it totally makes sense. I think I heard news of Taika Waititi directing Ragnorok but forgot about it. If it's not already in the Marvel thread I'll post it.

Also, add Turbo Kid and Kung Fury to the list.
