Nintendo grabs Bandai
« on: November 16, 2003, 05:42:36 AM »
"This week, well-regarded Japanese newsmagazine Sentaku published an article alleging that Nintendo is collaborating with UFJ Bank, which counts both Nintendo and Bandai among its corporate clients, to gain control of Bandai. The article is based on an interview with Makoto Yamashina, the son of Bandai's founder and one of the company's directors, as well as other industry insiders."

I think this a good move for nintendo but it's clear the son does'nt want to sell up.

Hey it's bussiness.

The working link is here:

But if Nintendo does buy Bandai, this could be a HUGE boost in Japan, considering how many anime licenses that Bandai has.

Hm, when I think of Bandai I think "toy manufacturer". Did I misunderstand something about their role or do they make shows AND toys?

they own the rights to dragon ball z games in japan(which atari publishes here), they have a strong relationship with tv tokyo which has some badass cartoons like naruto, i think scrapped princess was on tv tokyo, f-zero is, Bandai is making the //.hack games i think. They own power rangers . Bandai has alot of connections that would be beneficial to nintendo. Lots of licenses and big toy manufacturing plants.

This is great news if Nintendo wants to diverisfy itself into other markets.  Nintendo already is one of the world's largest publishers of video games (both home sonsole and portable).  If they merged/bought out Bandai then they would also become the world's largest toy maker.  In addition to that they would have rights/liscenes to several anime and manga series as well as some of the studios in which those series are made.  Nintendo could then compete in multiple markets and NOT be as dependant in only video games.  This would truely make Nintendo a powerhouse.  However, I dont not know how likely it is for Nintendo to acquire Bandai.  Its apparent that they have an interest in the firm due to their investment but whether they will be successful in woeing enough support is far from evidant.  We'll have to take a wait and see approach.  But it would certainly benefit both Bandai and Nintendo if this news was to come into fruitation.

.hack looks awesome. I saw a review of it on Toonami once. It looked marvelous. Wasn't the most recent installment online though?

Hell yeah...i've only played the first one thsu far but I'm still saving up for the second part.  It has some dry spots but the concept has so much potential, the story is great, and i LOVE the character design.  If bandai does this series right they could have one of their first respectable video game series that isn't just pushing some license.  (yes i know .hack is an anime, but ya know...)

I hate to be Devil's advocate but here's another viewpoint

Sure its a good business move. But isn't it basically just Nintendo sticking to the 'Kiddy' Stigma that competitors try to stuff them in? Sure, we've got Otakus here stateside (Myself included), but like hardcore gamers, we don't make up the vast majority of the market. Nintendo will grab the children's market alright, but what about us?

I'm sure we'll go gaga if/when they release a Gundam title on the 'Cube, but who's going to show out for it? Otaku and the kids. I don't know about you, but I still get wierd looks when I'm in the manga section which is filled with kids under 16. (Chances are, no 'adults' who are into Manga/anime in my area.)

I'll say again, good business move? Defintately. You got one of the biggest toymakers/anime on your side, which can almost gurantee success.  Will they solidfy their stake with children and otaku, which amounts to $$$? Most likely.
Will the casual gamer care (Ages 17-24, or the 'I want teh cool system with the most overated game'), which here in US make up the vast majority? Nope.

So there you go, another angle.

P.S Love Hina.Best.Comedy.Ever.

I didn't really understand this move.  Bandai's not going to go exclusive to gamecube, and it's not like Nintendo could buy out Bandai.  Bandai's licences are just as well known and valuable as Nintendo's.

On the plus side, hopefully whatever bandai puts onto GC will have an easier time comming to the USA.

As for all the anime, not all the stuff bandai releases in the USA is own by bandai.  They just have US licence rights to a very specific porduct.  Love hina for example, had little to do with Bandai, Bandai just released it to us eager US fanboys.

oh, and Azumanga Daioh kicks the crap out of Love Hina as a coemdy
