Mario Golf: Super Rush
« on: March 01, 2021, 05:09:50 PM »
One of the big games announced at the most recent direct that I am excited for is Mario Golf: Super Rush.

According to the game's web page the game is
  • scheduled to release June 25, 2021
  • is developed by Camelot
  • includes the following modes: Standard Golf, Speed Gold, and Story Mode
  • supports four player co-op locally and online
  • supports motion controls
  • includes the following playable characters: Mario, Yoshi, Waluigi, Daisy, Bowser, Peach, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Mii's, Toad, and Wario

Hopefully we can discuss the game as it's release nears and maybe even schedule some multiplayer with forum users. Here are some questions to get the discussion going:
  • What is your history with the Mario Gold series?
  • What mode are you most interested in playing?
  • Are there any playable characters that were not announced that you hope get added to the roster?

I have loved the Mario Golf series.  What I hope happens with this game is that each course has a "pure" golf version and a Mario special course version with crazy powers ups, Mario Kart like ramps and such.

The speed Golf game actually sounds really fun, but I dunno how they are going to do that well...but overall I like the concept.

However, I don't think I will pick this game up, because my money is limited and I will need to get other things for Switch later.

It's a definite maybe. I really want to give the motion controls a go & like Spak-Spang I also hope there's some sorta normal golfing option.

We got Peach & Daisy so I'm happy.

I am hoping Rosalina is included. With Mario Tennis Aces we saw a decent amount of playable characters added post launch so this may follow the same plan.

Rosalina was a DLC Character for World Tour 3DS. So, I imagine she'll be in Super Rush but will she be there in the game or as DLC again? Did Aces have DLC?

No paid DLC. There were just free updates the year following release. They added a decent number of characters (6?) and at least one new mode.

Hmmm. Nintendo hasn't really done much DLC with Switch games, have they? Not compared to 3DS and Wii U. I suppose re-releasing Wii U games but with extras added makes it hard to add even more with future DLC. Or maybe Nintendo is happy enough with software sales on Switch games to move on to other development and not worry about squeezing more money from a title.

Of the top of my head, paid DLC is in the following:

BotW,
Pokemon Sword and Shield
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Free DLC

Kirby Star Allies
Super Mario Maker 2
AC: New Horizons
Splatoon 2
Mario Tennis Aces
ARMS

I'm probably forgetting some stuff though. Maybe I'll do some more research and compare DLC titles from 3DS and Wii U to Switch and see if there's a big difference.

Are y'all worried the running from course to course will get tiresome? Feels like a gimmick which might grow old fast... Golf karts were invented for a reason.  ;)

Hope they'll add ChainChomp in this too, like with Tennis Aces. Wonder how he'd carry his golf bag.

Speed Golf mode is actually pretty similar to an idea I had of how Mario Golf games should play, so I guess that means I'll have to check this out at some point.

Mario Tennis Aces started with a roster of 16 and had 14 added over time with updates, so this game will probably do something similar.

1. I believe I played one of the NES Open golf games, but I never owned it. My first real exposure to the series was Mario Golf for the N64. There's no telling how many hours I put into it. I later played the GBA and 3DS games.I'm not sure how different the 3DS game is from the GameCube version, but I enjoyed it. I don't know if that would have changed if I had played Toadstool Tour previously.

2. Story mode though speed golf would be a close second.

3. It hasn't been officially announced, but I believe that based on some screenshots/video frames, King Boo is a character.  I'd like Rosalina, MagiKoopa and Birdo to be included. Maybe Gooigi. For really unlikely characters, why not Geno and Frogfucius? Characters I'd like to NOT be in the game are any baby version of characters. In games like Mario Kart, they take up way too many slots.

Yeah, if speed Golf is a game that ties speed and stroke score together and is some fun but simple run and platform elements mixed within an online golf game that sounds cool.   Local Multiplayer if they do split screen it could still work and be fun.

But if it is just a simple all the players run together to get to their ball then that sounds less interesting.  I really need to see how that mode plays.

I tried to find this online but just came across the stories that say King Bob-omb was leaked as a playable character. The official website no longer mentions him, but it appears this bomb has already been dropped.

The available modes at launch are:
  • Standard Golf
  • Speed Golf
  • Golf Adventure
  • Solo Challenge
  • Battle Golf
What will you play first?

I am thinking of trying out a round of Standard, Speed, and Battle modes with AI opponents first then proceeding to Golf Adventure. Once that is finished I will start hitting up the online multiplayer with my favorite mode. Solo challenge is the one I don't fully get from previews.

IGN gave the game a 6/10

The reviewer cited the lack of content and replayability as the main reasons for the "okay" score.

I finally got my copy Saturday at 7:00 PM. I think I will do store pick up with Best Buy in the future. I changed my mind from earlier and went directly into the Adventure mode. I am glad I did since it starts with some pretty in depth tutorials on driving, putting, etc. I think I will try and wrap that up before playing online. Hopefully Phil and others are still playing then.

I am also not as good at this as I would have thought. Admittedly, this is my first Mario golf game but factoring in the distance, slope, wind, rain, etc is tough. The speed golf makes it harder by not giving you time to think. I am still liking the adventure mode which is almost as good as the one from Mario Tennis Aces. I should be able to play online in another week, once my training is complete  ;)

Just I as I thought I was getting a handle on things, I reach XC Golf in Adventure. What the F was that?

That aside, I seem to be slowly getting better. I tend to do better avoiding the fancier spins/curve shots & just worry about my positioning when driving the ball straight.

Going for a putt on the other hand feels like a crap shoot when elevation is involved...

I finished the Golf Adventure. It ended taking about 9 hours for me. There are some optional challenges that are pretty tough. I thought it was just the right length though it does end rather abruptly.
Anyway, I am down for some online multiplayer now.
Also, I played a round with motion controls with my six year old niece. It worked well enough. It has been a while since I played Wii golf so it is hard to compare.

After playing through Golf Adventure I played a full round (18 holes) on each course with the Standard Golf mode. I played against 3 random AI opponents. This made me realize two things. First, the thing I would have like added is a set of tournaments, like those in Mario Tennis Aces. As far as I can tell there is no way to change the difficulty of the AI and they are pretty bad, averaging +10 per game. As you go through the courses they do get harder so while I started with a score around -10, by the last course I was breaking even. Since the AI do about the same on each course there is some felling of them getting more difficult but the game was never close. The other thing I realized is that you can unlock star clubs. These are leveled up sets of clubs assigned to each character. I played the 72 holes I mentioned above and was able to get about 1000 character points which unlocked the star clubs for Rosalina, the character I have been using. To get the double star clubs you need 3000 character points! This is quite a lot of playing and this is for one character. To unlock all the clubs for all the characters would require a lot of playing. I think it is too slow, much like the unlocks in Mario Kart 8.
I just tried out the Battle Golf mode tonight and it was okay. Probably better with real people. The games are very short and there are only two courses. Next up is Speed Golf with each course. I know GK mentioned not liking XC golf but I kind of liked it. The only problem is it appears to only occur in the Golf Adventure. I can see this being added as an additional mode later though.

I jumped back in to check out the new content. I played a round in New Donk City and one of the randomly selected AI players was Toadette. It is an interesting course and made me want to replay Super Mario Odyssey. All the holes are par 3 and most of the putting greens are completely flat. It seems like a good course to get a hole in one on. Of course, I still haven't gotten one. Toad, who was also playing against me, scored two in a row!  >:(. Also the music is nice on the course. Worth checking out for sure. The other added mode is ranked online, where you get matched with online players and there is a set level that rotates every couple hours. You can pick regular or speed golf, and buttons or motion controls. Based on how well you do you get a letter grade. This is similar to the online in Mario Tennis Aces except there, the ranked battles did not have any of the cool levels, it was always the same tournament court. Remember, before this update the only online was just playing someone so you could improve stats for a character. I think the new mode is much better, unless you are playing with friends.
