Nintendo Downloads - August 8, 2013

Plumbers, ducks and warlords.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35142

Mario & Luigi are once again making their way to a handheld near you, but Wii U owners, do not despair! DuckTales: Remastered will be available just two short days later!

Unfortunately no 3DS Virtual Console love this week, but the Wii U gets, what I consider, one of the best feudal Chinese warlord simulators ever to release on the Super Nintendo.

3DS eShop Sales

escapeVektor - $4.99 until 9am PT August 22

3DS Retail Games

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team - $39.99, Available August 11

3DS eShop Games

Smash Bowling 3D - $4.99

It's bowling! No zombies, no gimmicks, no explosions, just pure bowling action. The game boasts a four player multiplayer mode using a single system, so you can experience all the waiting and sitting of a real bowling alley! The Dude would be proud.

SteamWorld Dig - $8.99

I know, you're probably sick of mining games by now, but listen: SteamWorld Dig is different. You'll dig your way deep underground to defeat a race of ugly-as-sin troglodytes to uncover treasure as well as the remnants human civilization. See? Told you it was different. Besides, the main character wears a cowboy hat, which we all know makes the game awesome by default.

Tangran Style - $6.99

Just a refresher: tangrams are the little flat, multicolored, multi-shaped blocks that we all played with as kids, but didn't know what they were for. Solve puzzles, make shapes and feel good about yourself in Tangram Style's 600 tangram puzzles.

Wii U eShop Games

DuckTales: Remastered - $14.99, Available August 13

Man, ducks sure have a hard life! Race cars, lasers, airplanes; they've got a lot to deal with! Fortunately for us, Scrooge McDuck is up to the task and back to his old tricks!  Live the American dream as a duck on a pogo stick hoarding loads of cash and treasure. Heck, even if you don't want the game you should buy it just to listen to the music.

Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party - $8.99

Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party isn't as much a game as it is something cool you can do with three other people and a GamePad. While it might not be the system-defining title we've all been waiting for, it definitely does some interesting things with Nintendo's little tablet. Also, if the bottle lands on you, then you have to stay in the closet for the full seven minutes or you have to leave my party. Jerks.

Wii U Virtual Console

Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV Wall of Fire - $7.99

Things aren't looking good in China. In fact, the Second Han Dynasty is about to go kaput, and you're the only one that can save it. If you love looking at charts, boxes, dialogue and primitive spreadsheets then you just might be up to the task of saving this once great empire!

Bought Escape Vector on Vita for $3.99 and purchased Duck Tales on PS3 for $12. Sony continues to undercut Nintendo, at least if you're a PS+ member. Then people ask why 3rd party Wii U sales suck...

If you're a PlayStation Plus member. If you're not, the prices are generally the same as they are on Nintendo platforms. Not really fair to compare the benefits of a paid service to a platform with no real analog.

If you have a Deluxe Digital Downloads program, it will return you 10% of DuckTales' price thus matching the price with PS+.

The Tangram game seems a little particular about piece placement-sometimes you have to use the stylus to nudge pieces around before the game will accept it. It would be nice if you could tap a piece and nudge pieces with the control pad. Overall, not bad, but it could use some fine tuning. I'd give it somewhere in the 7-8 range (probably closer to 7).

No, it doesn't. For one thing, 10% of $14.99 is $1.50 (rounded up, naturally), so if you wanted to look at it that way it'd be $13.49. On PSN with PS+, it's $11.99, making PSN still the best deal.

This gets even more lopsided if you bought the other 3 games in Sony's PLAY promotion, where it's Buy 3 Get 1 Free.  I did, so Sony's essentially giving me DuckTales.  Advantage Sony, once again.

As for this week's downloads, there's nothing there that altogether interests me. I was going to get Mario & Luigi 4, but the bad buzz about the game online and the game overall just being M&L 3 again un-sold me on it.  Better luck next week.

Minor correction on my part: the PS PLAY promotion is Buy 4, get $10 off, essentially making the 4th game free for all the games but DuckTales due to its higher price tag.  So a $11.99 game basically becomes a $1.99 rather than "free".  Still, $2 is nothing and the better deal on the game regardless.

$50 a year, a price that more than justifies itself w/ the Instant Games Collection & all the digital download discounts (such as the ones mentioned in this very topic).

And for a limited time, if you're a Best Buy Rewards Zone member you can get a year of PS+ for $39.99.

Even at 39.99 you would have to 14 games/yr at a 3 savings before you'd revoup the benefit of the lower cost. I don't buy that many digital games so I'm not a ps+ member. The free trial games are a nice touch but I pretty much own all the games I've been interested in that they've put out there.

Still you can't help but wish Nintendo would come up with a way to give greater discounts up front if there competitors are willing to even if it's a paid membership.

Is anything new in the ducktales?  Part of me wants to pick to pick it up, but I have and beat the NES game last year. I'm not really up for a graphically upgraded port if that's all it is.

All the complaints about the game I've seen are things that really bug me in Nintendo games. Jeremy Parish's review of the game in particular troubles me, as well as the complaints I've seen on Twitter from some NWR reviewers.

You don't know what you're talking about. I just got PS+ last night and recouped the benefits almost instantly. I got Hitman: Absolution, XCOM, Saints Row 3, two $40 Vita games, and then a bunch of $10 indie games that work for both PS3 and Vita.

And if I had owned it as long as broodwars I would have had even more games.

That's why it's pointless to talk personal taste.  I have none of those games, nor want any of those games and I don't own a Vita.  It may personally be worth it to you and I never said it wasn't a good buy for you.  But I have not taken the plunge and I'm unlikely to now that the service will transition to the PS4 another system I do not own.  When they started giving out the free "rental" PSN games, I literally had every game that I cared to have that they gave free for it.  I have 80+ PS3 retail games and 40+ PSN games.  I would have probably tried some of the other free games, but never cared enough about those games to splurge on PS+.

And yes I do understand the service.  I own a PS3, had PS+ when they had the free trial for compromising all the passwords.  It's a decent service, and I said it would be nice if Nintendo had an equivalent.  I just don't game as much as you apparently which makes the value less to me.

The value doesn't change simply because you don't like what it offers.
