Dreamcast making a comeback?
« on: December 11, 2005, 08:29:15 AM »
Apparently, SEGA will be re-releasing the Dreamcast in limited edition over in Japan, according to some german website.

You know, this reminds me, I really, really want Sega to return to the console hardware market. I want a second console next gen, but I'm not as yet at all interested in either the 360 or the ps3. I think it could happen....it would be like how everyone became interested in Coca-Cola again after they took it off the market and replaced it with New Coke. Realistically, though, it'll never happen.

Maybe they'll enter the portable market again, though. I'd buy a dreamcast mini. Yeah.

There's like a 20% chance of Sega getting back in to the console market, and I'm being fanboyishly generous.
I hope it'll happen, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Why would you want a new SEGA system? They make maybe one worthwhile game a year, and no one wants to go near another SEGA console. There would be nothing on it except SEGA games, like Nintendo 50,000,000 times worse.

Ahahah, why did I even buy a Dreamcast.  For Skies?  For Ikaruga?  For Soul Calibur?  For the Phantasy Stars?  For the Sonic Adventures?  The only games worth owning for the Dreamcast are available in better forms for the GC

Biggest waste of $30 ever.

There's still games coming out for the Dreamcast in Japan. Mostly shmups, though.

Jet Grind Radio was a disappointment, and the Capcom fighting games just aren't the same without the arcade cabinent.  Also, Shenmue ololololol

Sega still remains awesome just because of Sonic 2 and Sonic and Knuckles.

I hate you guys so much!

But this thread reminds me that some company was putting out Game Gears again a couple years back, but I never saw any in any stores...

the Capcom fighting games just aren't the same without the arcade cabinent.

Then buy a few arcade sticks, build a wooden cabinet with a TV and put the Dreamcast in there. That's what people do with their MAME machines.

I'm with Artimus on this one, though Sonic 2 does rank on my top list of awesomest games ever.
And they've done other good stuff, too.  But not enough to merit the hype they bring with them.

Well, they understand fun, and are fairly talented videogame developers, which is more than I can say for either Microsoft or Sony.

"the Capcom fighting games just aren't the same without the arcade cabinent."

Even if they were in a cabinet on the DC, that still doesn't stop solve the one issue practically every Capcom port save for Double Impact and a couple of others had, they weren't arcade accurate at all.  Third Strike was a completely different game, MvC1 was off as well, and I'm not even gonna get started with Street Fighter Alpha 3.  It also doesn't help that the PS2 got a nearly dead-on version of SF3 Third Strike, and Hyper Street Fighter 2 which kills any reasoning to owning the DC Super Street Fighter 2 X.

You guys are all on crack, the Dreamcast was an AWESOME system but was just pulverized by the ps2 hype machine.  Im gonna say it... oh yes, im gonna say it..... Seaman was a freakin awesome innovative game (deserving of a ds port).

You scoff that alot of the good games on the dreamcast can be had on Gamecube, but that wasnt the case when it was still up and running.  You had exclusive:

Grandia 2
Skies of Arcadia
Seaman
JetSet series,
SNK vs Capcom 2 I believe
Ikaruga
Ofcourse, SHENMUE! (9.7 by IGN),
The 2k sports series that dominated EA's offerings even then,
Sonic Adventures,
DOA 2,
Phantast Star online,
Quake III,
Space channel 5,
RE:Code Veronica! (my #1 RE game, though I admit I have not played 4)

.... and plenty more 1st and 3rd party sweet offerings.

I miss Sega in domination mode, they truly had a innovative mentality (alot like Nintendo).

And no, Sega is not over-rated, they produced some of the greatest games this generation, unfortunately most of them came out on xbox.  Panzer Dragon Orta - Best looking game on xbox as far as im concerned. Shenmue 2 - spectacularly deep and involving.

I don't want to hear no Sega hatin. lol

Now im just hoping the Sega enters into a strategic exclusivity pact with Nintendo so I can have Shenmue 3 on my revolution.  The ONLY reason I bought a xbox was for Shenmue 2 and Panzer Dragon, Sega better not make me buy a 360 for Shenmue 3.

Rant Over.

The PS2 hype machine was a contributing factor just like Sega's business sense of a dead horse and their inability to make hotcakes sell.

Yeah i'll agree with that, they did not market their games very well.  Im not sure whether it was because lack of creativity or lack of funds.  Personally I think continually running the " something yells "SEGA!" ads forever would have kept me interested and entertained.

I'm a hopeless Sega fanboy too, and even if they announced Dreamcast 2 was being released tomorrow with specs that rival the competitors and a top notch library of launch titles, I'd be very hesitant about buying it at this point.

Say what you will about the Saturn's lacklustre lineup, they at least supported it for a reasonable lifespan. The way they bailed on the Dreamcast stateside a couple years into its existance and threw their loyal customers to the wolves so to speak was just shameful. The fact of the matter is most of the early "platform agnostic" games were glorified Dreamcast ports to begin with, it wouldn't have taken much effort to release them for the DC as well. We had a huge great lineup for the early part of the generation and in the end Sega left us out to dry like so many Atari Jaguar owners.

I just don't know if I could trust them not to do it again.
