Oper DS Browser Interview
« on: February 16, 2006, 09:45:41 AM »
There's an interview with Opera's Executive VP of Devices discussing the new Opera browser announced for the DS.  You can find it here.

No word on a North American or European release yet, or specifics of functionality, but an interesting read nontheless.

Well, but Adobe (or was it Autodesk? Meh, just as bad) is and I doubt that's an improvement.

if i understood all the interviews i've read online, nintendo was working on their own web browser for NDS but then found out OPERA was making a DS version of their browser, so nintendo stepped back and let the third party do their thing.

i am disappointed that the opera browser won't be able to support flash. i think that is a huge mistake. there is alot of potential here for web technologies to be enhanced. some words that come to mind are " VoIP, microphone, perhaps a GPS addon for touch screen photo scavenger hunt geo-location enhanced games!" (Mature rating to protect young children of course)

nintendo hasn't really used the microphone for much voice recognition has it? no it seems the purpose all long was to create a console that was for much more than gaming... i mean, how about a rechargable Ni-Fi headset for voip calling?

maybe video calling would be possible with the revolution and revolution camera? (no nintendo never said anything about a camera so plz donut flm m3

It's as much of a mistake as Ford not building ABS into the T-model.

one game is alot! i recind my statement!

no seriously. and don't count blowing on the microphone as voice recognition. allthough it sure is an easy implementation of the microphone.

Well, if you want to get technical there are also, Feel the Magic, Warioware, Electroplankton, Mario Kart, Phoenix Wright, Resident Evil, and Metroid Prime Hunters that use the Microphone or Voice Reconition and there probably are a few more games, only released in japan, that i'm just not aware of. So plently of games have made use of it, just don't get hung up on voice recognition as the only use for the microphone.

Where did you get this idea though... Nintendo has always positioned the DS as a innovative gaming handheld. Only Sony has blown a lot of hot air around saying their system is more then just great games.

Thats not to say i'm opposed to VoIP, TV tuners, mp3 players, or web browsers, I just wouldn't expect them. The DS is first and formost  a game system.
