Questions NWR Needs To Ask @ E3
« on: May 14, 2011, 06:51:09 PM »
Most of us aren't gonna get to go to E3 and often times we all have plenty of questions that aren't likely to be addressed.

So this thread is a place for us to put all those questions that we would like answered should they not be answered in the E3 Press Conference in about 3 weeks.

I'll start is off with the 1st question and update the OP with more questions as they are posted. Hopefully NWR Staff in attendance can use this thread as a reference for some question to ask when they're conducting interviews.

Question NWR Needs To Ask

1. Will Cafe be able to render Wii/GC games natively at a higher resolution or just upscale them to fit the screen resolution?

2. What is on Yoshi's back? A saddle or a shell?

3. What's the lineup for the WII?  If no high calibur games are coming what's the point of keeping the existing WII if the WII 2 is B/C?

4. Will the Super Wii have Gamecube controller ports or will it opt for controller emulation?

I highly doubt Nintendo will implement that kind of upscaling, no matter how much I want to play Wind Waker and Mario Galaxy looking like that.

Besides, the PS3 can't re-render PS2 or PS1 games in HD either, so I doubt the Cafe could.  The original games would have had to be made in HD and programmed to output in SD.  The best the Cafe can do is output the games in upscaled HD (which will look noticeably better depending on the game), unless Nintendo releases Cafe HD versions of the games.

PS3 and PS2 didn't have a similar processor in the same family as the previous (2) generations.

It's assumed that Cafe will use another PPC CPU from IBM, so I would think that to allow it to just use extra processing capabilities shouldn't be all that difficult.

edit:
I know Nintendo was extremely lazy on the Wii when it came to GC BC, but this is teh gen where they are seemingly going the extra mile.

I'm not sure you understand (unless there's something about Wii games I just don't know): you can't render something that doesn't exist.  Unless there are versions of all the textures in all these Wii games that were created at 720p or 1080p (in other words, there were already HD textures on the disc Nintendo programmed in to be used by a later HD-capable console), there's nothing to render in HD.  The existing SD output can be upscaled to HD, but I don't see how you can render a Wii game natively in HD without there being HD resources on the disc.

I want someone to ask Miyamoto really quickly on the side, what is on Yoshi's back? A saddle or a shell? I care not for the answers of the people at NWR, we've had that debate years ago.

Actually I can already upscale WII titles but really it's not the same as being native.  What you'll gain in sharpness you'll lose in detail.

My question I want asked; what's the lineup for the WII?  If no high calibur games are coming what's the point of keeping the existing WII if the WII 2 is B/C?

I want to play Wind Waker looking like it does in those screenshots. What I think would be more likely, given that this is Nintendo, is a retail rerelease of Wind Waker uprezzed and retextured for HD, preferably with the two dungeons that got cut out of it replacing some of the tedium at the end of the game. I doubt that second part would actually happen, though.

I'm talking about how the Dolphin Emulator does it. It natively renders at 1080p instead of just upscaling the image to fit a 1080p screen. Unless I'm misunderstanding how it was explained to me. I've never used it but I've seen the pics and as far as I know, it all looks like the same textures at a much higher resolution. Clearer, crisper and with lots of AA applied.

Just looked it up and it's an emulator that's running an enhanced rom's of wii games.  So it's no upscaling at all but people are making hi-resolution textures for current games.

I suspected as much, as that's the only way I know of to play Wii games in Native HD.

Are you sure about that. I read that the games are ripped straight from the disc through the Wii and onto the computer. Once ran through the Dolphin Emulator, the emulator renders the textures at 1080p and adds AA as opposed to rendering it in 480p and then upscaling it to a 1080p image.

I got my info second/third hand though, not from any official source.

Nope, just looked it up, people are replacing texture files and some of it looks ok other's look washed out.  There's a couple of images off google with Mario Kart GC, FZero, and Zelda Wind Waker.

So it's not really the Emulator doing anything special.

Honestly, after playing Ultimate Spider-man on the Wii the other day with my Wavebird, I'll gladly take controller emulation using something like the Classic Controller Pro.  The GameCube Controller is not as comfortable or user-friendly as I remembered it, not to mention the thing isn't cordless outside of the Wavebirds (which Nintendo "lost the mold" on).

There are other types of graphics other than 2D bitmaps, an emulator or Wii2 outputting at 1080p has the advantage of rendering Vector components of graphics at 1080p.

True, I'd forgotten about Vector images.  But I've only ever heard of Vector images being used for simple images like logos for easy scaling, not something as complicated as 3D model textures.

It all depends on the game. For instance, try playing FFIX on a PC. There's a reason the game took up four discs -- they used relatively high res textures, and it looks a lot better. Most games have a mix of higher and lower res textures, just whatever the artists had and could get to work at the time. Most of the screenshots floating around are just the games running at a higher res; the re-textured ones are the exceptions. Just a resolution increase and anti-aliasing can do wonders. When stevey says vectors, he's talking about polygon edges. You still have that information, so it's not like upscaling a DVD, the edges will become sharper (e.g. like N64 Virtual Console games). Especially for something like Wind Waker, where most of the game isn't based around textures, but lighting and shading, you can get a big improvement. Emulators can also upscale textures to some extent with appropriate filtering. With enough power they could go one step further, and add in tessellation to increase the polygon count. Are they magically going to look like top PS3/360 games? No, but they will still look significantly better.

So Dolphin does render natively at a higher rez and it's not all texture swaps?

So it should be possible for Nintendo, using a MUCH more powerful chipset in the same family, to render the games with graphical improvements at a native resolution of 720p/1080p without tampering with any of the original data on the disc?

Is that what you are saying?

Yes. However, that would require them to not just use the old BIOS like they've done so far with every other backwards compatible system they've made, and make a new one that can output the higher resolutions.

Seems like a good time to bump this thread.

NWR is @ E3 and they have an opportunity to actually get some of the answers that we crave.

1. Will there be local multi-player using multiple Wiiu controllers?

2. Will external HDD's be supported right away?

3. Will tech specs for the machine ever be officially released?

4. Can we please have Wiiu released in Black? Pleeeeaaaase!!!

5. Do they plan on bringing back SpaceWorld for Wiiu, or will they only be attending other major events throughout the next year (TGS, EB Expo, CES, GDC) to reveal more information?

They just interviewed him in GT and the question that posed to him were

Somebody needs to tell NOA why the f*ck isn't Xenoblade coming to North America.  A 100+ hour RPG that's considered one of the best RPG's in the last decade and already has an English translation since it's scheduled to hit Europe in a few months.

Seriously, somebody needs to give NOA sh!t for this since there is no excuse for a game like this to not be given an American release.  This isn't like Another Code where the previous game on the DS bombed or like Disaster where the quality was considered to low.  Xenoblade is a gaint AAA title that's gotten amazing reviews and plays more like a Western RPG then a traditional Japanese RPG which would allow the game to have good appeal to the North American gaming audience.

There is no excuse at all for this game to not come to North America and somebody needs to tell NOA just What the F*ck!

Ask not just about Xenoblade but also why the Wii has so little new content this year.  Seriously, Nintendo has more or less left the Wii to rot with the exception of the Zelda.  Someone should point that out to them and make them answer and not accept it when Reggie lists Zelda, Kirby, Wii Play and a bunch of third party shovelware as "tons of content".  Don't let them spin it like this ain't a drought because it is.

Will there actually be a focus on the core gamer this time or was that a lie?

I feel like I've waited entirely too long for Pikmin 3, what will you do to rectify this?

For what it's worth, there is another roundtable meeting tonight. It's unprecedented for Nintendo to have 2, so who knows what will come out of it.

Last night's didn't have too much info, other than the Pikmin 3 stuff, so I'm hopeful that tonight has a bit more info. The past two years, they announced new games (Skyward Sword and OoT 3D), so I have to imagine something new will come from tonight's.

Actual Wuu software is supposed to be show today so I'm just gonna go ahead and predict that tonites roundtable will be all about Wuu 3rd party games.

The only actual 3rd party game that showed actual Wuu capabilities was the Ghost Recon. everything else was PS360/PC footage. & GR is a Wuu console exclusive as far as I know.

I know we should be seeing footage of the Wuu (exclusive?) versions of the Ninja Gaiden III & Assassin's Creed.
Are there any other games that were specifically mentioned by 3rd parties?

Put the question about the one uTablet per console back in.

We need clarification from an alternate source.

It is mind-blowing to me how NO ONE in the American gaming media is holding Nintendo's feet to the fire about Xenoblade and Last Story.  SOMEONE ASK NINTENDO ABOUT THESE GAMES!
We asked. We got nothing. Same for nearly every question in this thread -- they would not discuss any hardware specifics.

Q: Is it possible for Nintendo to allow 2 uScreens at once for local multiplayer before release?

ex. Madden play picking, pall catching/interception, on the fly audibles/play drawing
ex. NBA Live free throws, shooting and passing.

Will balance and weight accurate Demo uMotes be sent out where the public can hold it?
Will their by a Cube Club for this before release so, customers can experience the system first hand?
(This, I think was a misstep for Wii and 3DS not having event before hand to allow non-press people to play the system before hand.  Their should be at least one done in every state in the US.  Zach will host the Alaskan one because, we all know he secretly loves the Sushi plate :P )

Ask them "Who are you partnering with for Online?"

You have to be sneakier than that.

how about "Now that you've partnered with Valve for your online network, what do you think will be the biggest change in the way Nintendo approaches online gaming & community?"

Sigh.  As others have stated, thanks for asking.  I'm not a raging fanboy or anything, but, thus far, I haven't felt this disappointed since E3 2008.  Actually, back then I just didn't care; this actually has me a little miffed.  Nintendo, talk about sending mixed messages.

Ask a random Major Dev known to be working on the Wuu if in their personal opinion do they think ,based on what they know right now, that the power of the Wuu is designed to be a late entry in the current gen of HD consoles or more at competing as the first of the next gen consoles.

on the record but completely anonymous if that helps get an honest answer.

This is a thread of Questions that people want to ask NWR at E3.  I've taken out the ones that are already answerred and the duplicates out.  Also took out the discussion to give a good printable list.

I'm about a day late in bringing this here, I didn't check my email closely yesterday.

Quote
Hey Ceric, thanks for collecting these. We read over them in the car this morning, and I'm afraid the answer to nearly all of them is "no" or "Nintendo/third-parties won't answer that yet". Trust me, we have asked. Regarding the third-party Wii U games, none of the companies here are discussing platform-specific features, and some didn't even know about the Wii U version until Nintendo's press conference. Detailed technical questions aren't being answered, nor is Nintendo discussing online features or anything else. They came with a short, finite list of details that would be revealed, and those are already out there. I would appreciate if you could relay this message to the forums. We are staying very busy writing impressions and previews of all the games here at E3.

This is from Dr. Metts.  It seems Nintendo had a checklist of what they wanted to answer and that was it.

Well since this list actually came in useful I guess we should bump it everytime an event comes up that NWR is going to attend just so they never run out of questions to ask

Like Mr. Neal here

who had a 2 parter to ask but forgot the 2nd part of his question....

Oh yes.. I saw that during the U-B-I soft conference (that's how Iwata pronounces Ubisoft).
and now the whole forum knows Mwahahahaha.

Question for the NWR staff:
is anyone gonna be attending GDC Europe on Aug 15-17
or Game Conference (Liepzig, Germany) which is also mid Aug ?
