TalkBack / First Revelations on WiiWare DLC
« on: April 02, 2008, 02:47:11 PM »
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King features $13 of downloadable content available via an in-game menu.
 http://nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15687

With WiiWare already out in Japan for a week, the first bits of downloadable content are showing up. The first game to have DLC is Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King.

The available downloadable content adds up to a total of $13, which is almost as much as the $15 price of the game itself. In these packs, you get three different races to populate your city with (300 Wii Points each or 800 for all three), some new outfits (two at 100 Wii Points each) and some new buildings (one at 200 Wii Points and one at 100 Wii Points).

The block sizes for the content range between 1 and 3 blocks. The fact that the content is so small in size brings into question whether or not this downloadable content is actually a download. This is strikingly similar to the burgeoning video game controversy of whether or not downloadable content is truly downloadable, which is a point of criticism of the recent Professor Layton and the Curious Village. Along with that,  the new buildings you can get aren’t immediately available after you download them: a new dungeon appears that you first have to beat before you can actually access your new buildings. In order to access any of these features you have to re-download an updated version of the game to access the downloadable content menu.

One bright spot about the downloadable content menu is the fact that it is in-game and easy to navigate, meaning players can spend their Wii Points straight from the game instead of having to boot up the Wii Shop Channel separately.

TalkBack / LucasArts Appoints New President

Darrell Rodriguez joins LucasArts after being COO of Electronic Arts Los Angeles.
 http://nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15685

Today, LucasArts announced Darrell Rodriguez as their new president. He replaces former president, Jim Ward, and comes to the company from Electronic Arts Los Angeles where he was chief operating officer.

Along with his video game experience  at EA, he also worked with Disney Imagineering.

Darrell Rodriguez Named President of LucasArts

San Francisco, Calif. (April 2, 2008) – Darrell Rodriguez has been named president of LucasArts, the videogame division of Lucasfilm Ltd., it was announced today by Lucasfilm President Micheline Chau.

"Darrell is the ideal person to run LucasArts," states Chau. "Having worked at both Electronic Arts and Disney Imagineering he brings the perfect blend of production, operational, and creative expertise.  For a games company such as LucasArts with its roots in film, this is an electric combination."

Rodriguez will take the helm at LucasArts in mid-April.  He currently serves as Chief Operating Officer at Electronic Arts LA in charge of overall operations, product development and strategic growth for the studio.  An avid gamer, Rodriguez has extensive expertise in multiple categories from action sports games, to first person shooters, to real time strategy games.  He has worked on such diverse titles as SSX On Tour; Medal of Honor: Airborne; The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II; and Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.

"I couldn't be more excited to join such a dynamic and innovative company as LucasArts," states Rodriguez.  "The people are world class and the IP is the best in the business.  To be able to work with such cultural icons as Star Wars and Indiana Jones and develop new franchises is like a dream come true."

Prior to Electronic Arts, Rodriguez also held positions in product development and production at EarthLink, Walt Disney Imagineering and the Walt Disney Internet Group.  Born and raised in the Bay Area, Rodriguez earned his MBA at the University of California, Berkeley.

Rodriguez joins LucasArts at a key time in its 26 year history. 2008 boasts a terrific slate of games led by Lego® Indiana Jones™: The Original Adventures which will launch June 3 just after the theatrical release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull™. Developed by the same team at Traveller's Tales that created the LEGO Star Wars™ series, LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures presents a tongue-in-cheek take on the first three cinematic adventures of pop culture's most iconic archaeologist, including Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.  Next up is the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Unleashed™, in which the player is cast as Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice in the time between Episodes III and IV.  The first next-gen game to come out of LucasArts internal studio, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed completely reimagines the scope and scale of the Force. Fracture, a new IP developed by Day One Studios, advances players 150 years into a future in which the devastating effects of global warming and the debate around genetic enhancement have literally and figuratively split the United States in two, placing it on the brink of war.  The game introduces "Terrain Deformation," a truly next-gen gameplay mechanic that allows players to completely modify the battlefield on the fly.

As for the game, I'm actually looking forward to it. I've become a fan of tennis and ping pong games on the Wii. In fact, most reviews say that the Wii version is the best of them all thanks to the controls.

I've heard much the same. Apparently the controls are too simplified for 360 and PS3 control schemes just ignore buttons and double up on others.

This might be a fun Metal Slug ripoff.

XS Games will develop the shoot-'em-up as it eyes a Q3 release in North America.

Commando: Steel Disaster is a new side-scrolling shoot-'em-up from Lexicon Entertainment and XS Games that is set to come out for DS in North America in Q3 2008. The game appears to be very reminiscent of SNK's Metal Slug series as it uses a similar graphical style.  The game was previously announced in Europe and is set to release there on May 9th.

Lexicon Entertainment And XS Games Collaborate To Bring 'Commando: Steel Disaster' The American Market

Sheffield, England – March 31st, 2008 – Video games publisher Lexicon Entertainment are delighted to announce that the highly anticipated Nintendo DS product ‘Commando: Steel Disaster’ will be shooting its way to American retail stores in Q3 with a publishing deal in place with highly respected XS Games.

You get to do this with a range of heavy weaponry and Lexicon assures us there are plenty of different weapons and pick-ups - each with its own attack method and power. So the "Walk this Way" version will be the Run DMC collaboration?

I'd assume so but nothing's been officially announced.
Obviously the standout songs will be final tier stuff.

On another note, its funny how Rock Band Wii comes out the week before this. In all honesty, everyone should buy the PS2 version of the game Wii's getting unless they love them some Aerosmith.

TalkBack / REVIEWS: Sega Superstars Tennis
« on: March 30, 2008, 03:03:48 PM »
Mini-games dominate Sega’s nostalgic tennis game.
 http://nintendoworldreport.com/reviewArt.cfm?artid=15661

As a child, my enjoyment of the Sega Genesis spawned the misguided nostalgic affinity I have for all things Sega. This the main reason why I was interested in Sega’s new Smash Bros. meets Mario Tennis game, Sega Superstars Tennis.  While filled with some creative ideas, the game is hampered by an imprecise control scheme that doesn’t meet the high standards set by similar titles such as Wii Sports.

For any Sega fan, this is a trip down memory lane. With a choice between sixteen characters coming from such disparate titles as Sonic the Hedgehog, NiGHTS and Golden Axe, the company roster is satisfactorily represented. There are eight different stages to choose from and while there are a few series that are unrepresented, the character and stage list is adequate and there are certainly some pleasant surprises in the batch.

The gameplay is typical tennis fare.  It’s playable with up to four people, but it’s really nothing inventive or groundbreaking. The only substantially different aspect is the Superstar mode that builds up as you play. Once your Superstar meter builds up (represented by a star underneath your character that gradually fills in), you are able to pull off an often hard- to- control special shot that might daze your opponent with stray maracas or turn you into Super Sonic. While these moves are occasionally visually dazzling and might usher in a laugh or two, they don’t seem to do too much in terms of bettering your game.

Neither do the controls in some cases. There are four different control schemes used in the game, and some work much better than others. The Wii Remote by itself plays similarly to Wii Sports Tennis except it is not as robust, and doesn’t give you any difference from a backhand and a forehand. The second option is my preferred method of play: a combination of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The Nunchuk’s analog stick controls your character and you swing the Wii Remote to hit the ball. Unlike the remaining control schemes (Sideways Remote and the Classic Controller), which have overly complicated ways to perform lobs and drop shots (hitting 1 and then 2 in a rhythmic fashion), the Remote-Nunchuk pairing has lobs and drops assigned to either A or B on the Remote. Nonetheless, the Sideways Remote and Classic Controller work fine.

The motion controls prove problematic at times. There is a long downtime every time you swing, during which your character goes through the motion and is then stuck in a static position. While playing the single player mode’s doubles games, I would often be competing with an erratic computer companion who would steal shots from me and cause me to get caught in swing downtime. This often kills games, since your opponents can then hit a solid shot that stumps both of you as you are left lingering in your post-swing position.

The meat and potatoes of the game are contained in the single player Superstar mode. This mode has you playing through various stages containing an overwhelming amount of mini-games and the occasional tennis match. By beating these various missions, you unlock new characters, courts and music. The stages and missions are fun (and a smile might come to your face as you unlock such stages as Chu Chu Rocket and Puyo Pop), but they’re very repetitive. There may be ten missions in a stage, but they are all basically the same mini-game with a plodding introduction as to how the game is played. Nonetheless, there is a considerable amount to do in this mode, and it should take you somewhere between five and ten hours to complete it in its entirety.

While the tennis aspect of this game is a reproduction of the same game we’ve been playing on real courts for years, the mini-games are where Superstars Tennis really takes creative license. Sega staples such as Space Harrier, House of the Dead, and six others are given a tennis makeover. Space Harrier has you playing the shooter with a Sega character armed with a racket and balls, while House of the Dead has you turning back an endless supply of the undead with a zombie-killing tennis ball.

Not all of the mini-games are all that creative and fun, however; there are some duds in the bunch, such as the Sonic the Hedgehog game in which you frantically collect rings while dodging spiked balls and bombs. It just seems very out of place in a tennis game when the mini-game has no relevance to tennis besides the fact that it takes place on a court. While all mini-games can be played cooperatively with up to four people, it often clutters the screen with too many characters.

All in all, Sega Superstars Tennis has decent controls but suffers from a somewhat shallow tennis design. Its mini-games are definitely its highlight but once the novelty of them wears off, you’ll probably want to play the original titles rather than continue playing this one. I’d highly recommend it to Sega fans, as there is enough nostalgia to help you get though the repetitive and boring parts, but non-Sega fans won’t find enough to generate lasting interest.

Pros:

  • Good nostalgic kick
  •
  • Fun and creative mini-games

  •        Cons:

  • Questionable controls
  •
  • Repetitive single-player mode

  •                Graphics:  7.5
The characters and locales look fine. There is nothing spectacular about them but there is nothing that looks downright ugly.

                   Sound:  9.0
The sounds are reminiscent of the games they hail from. There is a significant amount of good unlockable music from each game.

                   Control:  7.0
The controls aren’t perfect, but they work with a little frustration.

                          Gameplay:  8.0
No surprises with the tennis besides the power-up mode but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The mini-games are almost all fun and have an astounding amount of variety as they range from hitting zombies to saving mice from cats.

           Lastability:  7.5
The single-player mode lasts a while, but once that’s done it’s just a regular old tennis game with some fun diversionary mini-games.

           Final:  7.5
A fun tennis game that has only one innovative addition: rehashing prior games and incorporating tennis into them.

While I remain annoyed with Guitar Hero because I kind think Activision is running into the ground and Rock Band is far superior, they appear to be making this Aerosmith game be mildly decent. As not much of a fan of the band, the list of other songs and bands don't seem awful.

Details and confirmed song list of the upcoming Guitar Hero spin-off.
     http://nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=15660

In Activision’s upcoming Guitar Hero add-on, they will bring the history of Aerosmith to life on video game consoles. While the game will be using the same engine as Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, it will have new characters and venues. The new characters will be, naturally, all of Aerosmith. You will be able to play as Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton and Brad Whitford along with the rest of the fictional Guitar Hero regulars. The new venues will showcase various moments of Aerosmith’s legendary career, such as their performance at the 2001 Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The game is set to contain somewhere between thirty and forty songs and will have five different venues. The first two songs in each tier will be songs by bands that influenced or were influenced by Aerosmith; the rest of the tier will be all Aerosmith songs. Apparently 60% of the songs will be by Aerosmith, while the rest will be by other bands ranging from Lenny Kravitz to Run-DMC. Last but not least, the popular boss battles of Guitar Hero III will also make a return, but they will be changed a little bit to address gamer’s concerns from the previous incarnation.

The game is being developed by Vicarious Visions (the same team that made the Wii version of Guitar Hero III), and is currently set for a June 29th release.

"The Wii version offers the best online experience to date," says the development team's leader.

The Wii's online interface works best for Pro Evolution Soccer, according to the development team leader.

In a recent interview with Next Gen, Pro Evo Soccer team leader Jon Murphy said that the Wii version of the game "has all the intricacies of the existing versions, but within a user interface that couldn’t be implemented on any other format." He acknowledges the difficulties the team had on the online infrastructure for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. "The Wii version isn’t just a good football game, it is an ambitious one," he said.

"[Konami has] a wealth of exciting announcements to make on the next version, all of which advance and benefit the series," Murphy added when asked about future versions of the game. He later mentioned Konami’s intentions to release the popular game in other territories, namely South America.

Is it bad that I'm rooting for EA over Activision?
Like, I know they're both big bad companies and everything, but at least EA is putting out somewhat innovative games every now and then (mainly looking at skate and Rock Band) while Activision just runs their IPs into the ground. I mean, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith? And has anyone cared about a Tony Hawk ins years? Has there been a decent Marvel game by Activision since Spider-Man 2? The only bright spot for Activision seems to be COD4, but they even screw up that by having another company besides Infinity Ward make COD5.

International Karate and Uridium lead in the C64 charge, while the N64's Cruisn’ USA is also released today in Europe.
     http://nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15634

This week’s European Virtual Console games contain the release of the previously announced Commodore 64 games, International Karate and Uridium at 500 Wii Points each. Also hitting the virtual realm is the Nintendo 64 racing game, Crusin’ USA, at 1000 Wii Points. Since the Commodore 64 was a personal computer, the games for it often used keyboards. VC Reviews notes that whenever such a time arises, the Wii’s on-screen keyboard pops up and lets you input whatever you need.

International Karate is a one-on-one fighting game that uses an interesting control scheme because of the Commodore 64’s one-button joystick in which moves are done by moving the control stick around.

Uridium is part of the usual Virtual Console fare of shoot-‘em-ups. However, the game is quite legendary amongst the system’s fans and brings an atypical setup where your movement is not forced and you can scroll through the game’s levels.

EA's being shrewd but pretty smart. If they get Take-Two (as they are determined to do) they will be able to one up Activision's purchase of Vivendi and have total domination over the sports market. Also, that little game called GTAIV will make them big moneys.
It's really interesting seeing the two big third party companies fight with games (GH vs. RB; THPS vs. skate) and purchases.

    5495
Yea, Taito's responsible for developing it, but I guess they don't have the power they had because they need Square Enix to bring their games everywhere.
