Who are these "far better" choices? I think just about every newcomer so far has been interesting, and while I don't think I'd have ever come up with someone like Wii Fit Trainer I think she's a fantastically ridiculous addition.
Better choices:

-Waluigi
-Cranky Kong or K.Rool
-Issac (Golden Sun)
-Midna, she is popular enough (cancel out Toon Link, hate how there is two characters with the same moveset)
-Any Warioware character, there is enough variety.
-Hoenn Starter Pokemon
(Which reminds me, I forgot about Greninja. He was also a good addition along with Palutena. One of the decisions with the character roster)
-Terra (FFVI. We got Capcom to allow Megaman, anything is possible)

Waluigi? While I don't like to hate on anyone's preferences for characters, compared to the newcomers we have now Waluigi is just ugh. What does he bring to the table? Mario sports/spin off material? He was never a leading man and that's why he only appears in spin offs. Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man, Little Mac and everyone else revealed so far deserves to be in Smash so much more than that guy. Those characters have made much more of an impact than he ever will.

Valid point up until Wii Fit Trainer. I still don't understand the thought process behind that and never will.

I would say because Wii Fit made a huge impact for Nintendo and the gaming world at large. During the years of Brawl development Sakurai didn't look towards non-violent characters for playable status. That goes for Nintendogs, Animal Crossing and Wii Fit undoubtedly despite never mentioning it. At the time Sakurai couldn't even invision how Pac Man would work as a playable character even after Miyamoto's request.

Times change and Sakurai must have come to a different conclusion as to what constitutes for a good playable character. When discussing Olimar he mentioned how there were very few games made that were character driven that made an impact. Now though it seems like any Nintendo property that has made an impact deserves some playable recognition. Of course there are some exceptions like the Ice Climbers. Wii Fit Trainer fits that and more wouldn't you say? Not to mention the shock value of it all was pretty awesome.

As much as I hate to admit it, Isaac, Saki, Ashly, Dillion, Samurai Goroh and many more won't be getting any playable status anytime soon without the actual series coming back in semi big way.

Ridley is not one of these characters and needs to be playable! He starred in 2 games last gen, got a big guest starring role in Smash Bros it's self and even came out in one of the games commercials! I want my pterodactyl xenomorph! Just give him Charizard's wings and tail, Donkey Kong's arms, Bowser's hunched posture and float mechanic like Peach just less abusable.

Then, you're clearly not trying. Wii Fit Trainer is one of Nintendo's most recognizable characters from one of their most popular IPs. Her inclusion is exactly the kind of outside-the-box thinking that's so integral to Super Smash Bros., a fighting game that subverted the entire genre. The series is a celebration of Nintendo's entire history; Wii Fit Trainer, like her or not, is part of that history and a pretty important part at that.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

THIIIIIIS! More than anything else that any of us could define Super Smash Bros. as, the one niche the series fits perfectly is that it is the CELEBRATION of a company that at some point in our lives has brought us a very powerful joy in one way or another. There is somebody out there in the aether who played a bunch of Sheriff in the arcade or Game & Watch on the train to work. There is somebody out there that played a whole bunch of Mach Rider when they were a little kid. There's somebody out there that remembers the Super Scope so fondly that they make videos of themselves shooting at possessed demon cartridges of Super Mario Bros. 3 with it.

Y'know what? there also happens to have been a lot of people who came home from work every day, got in front of the tv, and performed Yoga poses that were instructed to them by a featureless Mannequin. Super Smash Bros. is the celebration of Nintendo's tenure as a video game developer, and Wii Fit Trainer being front and center is the most elegant way that Masahiro Sakurai had to tell us this. By using this character nobody would have expected and this character that probably would have focus group tested, He has successfully brought something we wouldn't have tried otherwise to the table. More importantly, he is a successful internet troll if you're still butthurt over the decision.

It's going to be Shulk or Chorus Men. Despite the accuracy of Gematsu leak up to this point, I'm still willing to bet decent money that Chrom is NOT going to be in the game. I'm sure he was planned at one time, but since the leak was well over a year ago, it's reasonable to assume of the initial plans have changed and Chrom was dropped for Ike (Adding new FE characters to the SSB roster is tricky since most only appear in a single game, then lose relevance. Marth and Ike have appeared in multiple games, so they'll always have relevance).

And yet somehow the RPGs of the SNES era, which are tremendously popular and influential on the entire gaming industry, have no representation aside from Fire Emblem and Earthbound. You want to try prove to me that is a celebration of Nintendo's success, then get any character from one of those RPGs that Nintendo owes a lot to. Even as an assist trophy would be fine.

There are a lot better choices of influential characters to choose from. I still think it is a poor choice.

RPG's from Nintendo or 3rd party? Aside from Snake, Sonic, Mega and Pac Man were pretty heavily requested characters. There are people who want Chrono and god knows what else Square and/or Enix made in the day but like Sakurai said, he won't just ad any company's character into Smash Bros. And if anyone got in from them the big RPG makers it would be something like Slime/Chocobo/Dark Mage and those guys are now from the same company. While

Nintendo owes a lot of it's past success to games like that, though what characters among them is an icon? Granted not every Nintendo character is an honest to goodness gaming icon but it's pretty obvious if it's 3rd party they darn well better be.

@Bman. Prepare for Chrom. I don't care about him too much but chances are he is making it in. I mean his Fire Emblem game really hit home with critics and fans, he is joining up. Ike had a completely unique play style with plenty of assets to use in this game. There was no way Ike wasn't returning.

My brother who is normally completely rational would often tell me "Chrom will not be playable because everyone knows a Smash Bros game has only 2 Fire Emblem reps, Marth and the new guy. That's the pattern and since Ike is in it's settled. Not to mention he isn't relevant anymore." At that point I proceeded to tell him how stupid he was. There are no patterns, especially with only 2 entries.

Relevance is another somewhat silly issue honestly. Jigglypuff, G&W, ROB, and Pit all say hi. If they were important enough at some point in time chances are they will be added into Smash and for guys like Jiggly it seems like they will keep being added.

Although, it will probably be one of the characters in the Leak...and I am betting it will be a pretty big reveal of a popular character...so that makes me guess Shulk.

I really, really, want Bomberman.  I think he would be a great character.

Have his specials be different bomb attacks.  His regular attacks can be punches and kicks, but they are very weak.  However, his bomb attacks would be very powerful.

Specials.  Regular Special.  Lay Bomb.
Forward Special Punch Bomb and also a powerful smashing attack...very little damage though.
Down B: Detonator Bomb  Do it again to blast.

Bombs can be strung across and detonated for a combo blast.

Up B.  Bomberman  drops a bomb that immediately blasts sending him flying.

Mog
Recurring character in the Final Fantasy series. In FFVI, he is the dragoon, one of the most popular classes in the series. Maybe not heavily requested, but still iconic to the FF series.

Caterkiller already touched on this. Fire Emblem and Earthbound are Nintendo IPs. The third party characters that have been included are those respective companies' most recognizable characters (despite how much Capcom wants to pretend Mega Man doesn't exist these days) along with the stipulation that they had to appear on a Nintendo platform. Snake makes sense for Konami despite questionable albeit acceptable credentials on Nintendo hardware, but he was included mostly as a favor to Hideo Kojima.

As for influential, you bring up characters like Waluigi and Isaac yet you can't grasp the validity of Miis and Wii Fit Trainer? Super Smash Bros. is a celebration of Nintendo's history (not necessarily success). Just because you don't like certain characters doesn't change their place in Nintendo's past.

Wii Fit Trainer is a ludicrous choice, but that's what Smash Bros. is all about. The series revels in its ridiculousness, its insane spectacle. That's the whole point.

I'd prefer if it's a character out of left field. I think Shulk makes it onto the roster, but for an announced character reveal, he just seems too obvious. Most people are already betting on Shulk. Where's the fun in that? The best reveals are the ones you don't see coming. Mega Man's debut trailer was awesome because it was unexpected. More of that please. Thanks! "Oh, you think it's Shulk? Here's not Shulk at all!"

Ganondorf with his own moveset would be swell. A completely original moveset would make the character new, but it's still trollish since he's a Super Smash Bros. veteran. I'm still sticking with Bayonetta.

You said you didn't understand their thought process. That is their thought process. I'd argue that Wii Fit Trainer and Miis hold a far greater place in Nintendo's history than the characters you listed, but if this is essentially boiling down to subjectivity, we're done here.

Man, I'm a pretty big Nintendo Fanboy, but I just don't get into the hate on Rayman like some folks do.  He gets a total "'meh" from me at best - but my blood doesn't boil at the thought of him being included in the game as a trophy.

Oh noes, Ubisoft was going to make a game exclusive, then they didn't.  Whoop-dee-freakin'-doo.

I mean, if you want to talk Nintendo-betrayals, Capcom 5.  And yet, all the other fanboys are wetting themselves over Mega Man in Smash Bros.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.
