On Tyrant Mode, all your folks start with one health only, so your kingdom is made up of geriatrics (and Corobo is always the most adorable octogenarian ever).
Exactly why I'm not going to try it. Some boss's attacks are unavoidable so I don't see how it's even possible.

Actually, every attack is avoidable (as I've learned the hard way). Some of them are just very, very difficult to dodge. Make sure to never bring more troops than you absolutely need, and use that Guard formation at nearly all times!

He says start.  I assume you can still get health upgrades.  There are 5 or 6 health upgrades throughout the game--and that's not counting bonuses from equipping items--so your characters won't die from a single hit.

The problem is it just doesn't sound fun.  The weakest part of LKS was constantly calling back your characters before enemies attacked.  The game would be a real chore if you have to do it even more diligently.

You are correct. Oddly, this makes the game much easier as it progresses, which is the opposite of how it felt the first time. I disagree about it making the game more of a chore, though: while I initially feared the same, it actually forced me to learn the enemies' patterns and weaknesses really well. I'm actually more aggressive now than I was when everyone, including my king, had more health. One exception is that I don't use my scepter after getting the first health edict, as 99/100 that's basically a restart.

Oh, and the final boss is a pain now, since he targets your king quite well. I can't sit here and tell you it's worth the effort, but I loved the game enough to think that the extra challenge was actually a good incentive to replay it.

I don't think they're that critical.  Having a balance within a town section is important if you're going to farm the dungeon there, but the fact is the homestead is a safe motherland for growing new runeys as long as it's continuously cultivated.  Having runeys everywhere, from my understanding, is NOT critical; what's important is to have the runeys balanced within a single town section that you intend to farm (ex: Mist's House area affects crops in Green Ruins).

Summer crops take ridiculously long to grow, and they're easy to lose track of when you deviate from your daily routine; it's too easy to neglect crops for a day and make growth rates seem longer than you expect.

Once Winter rolls around and your farm can't grow anything, then your Homestead runeys will start to take a hit, and you should be prepared to grow crops elsewhere anyway.  Or FISH!  Runeys don't affect FISH!  When Spring arrives, you can try to repair the ecosystem then.

The benefits of having an abundance of runeys are creating Miracles and forming Rune Stones.

Only my Homestead and Mist's House are being maintained.  The lake has a bunch of Water Runeys, and the Mountain Road has a bunch of Tree Runeys, cuz that's how nature happened.  Everything else is Zombieland.  If I chose to redistribute my Homestead Runeys, I just leave about 10 of each behind, then start dropping Runeys elsewhere based on where their population growth is favorable.

Actually, it's the other way around: the runeys for a particular zone are irrelevant: it's the aggregate that matters. Your farm can be barren, but as long as the other zones are in prosperity, you take advantage of the prosperity rules.

So yes, Mop_it_up, you ARE in trouble.

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to fix this. First, take advantage of your farm being a free zone, so as to grow more runeys. Second, remember that any 3x3 plot ON YOUR FARM that you don't harvest creates an extra runey at the end of the day (unharvested plots in dungeons only create Rune Spirits, which you don't care about right now). Third, remember that the first eight days of each month are "free" days, where runeys don't kill each other; in fact, you GAIN one of each runey in a zone.

So STOP HARVESTING IMMEDIATELY. Let your farm produce runeys. Hold onto rock and grass runeys for the rest of the month. In the meantime, move one (and only one) tree or water runey into any zone that is in runey extinction (this prevents the penalty on growing crops: one of any runey is enough to avoid the penalty. But remember to replenish each zone ASAP!).

On the last day of the month, harvest all but one of the rock and grass runeys on your farm. On the first day of the next month, move ONE rock and ONE grass runey to as many different zones as you can. This is so you can take advantage of the "one new runey a day" rule. At the end of the eigth day, harvest all your grass runeys from all but one zone. Start a grass factory per Gamefaqs' suggestion (preferably in Mist's zone) to increase your Grass supply, and nurse the factory as needed. Remember to keep an eye on the other zones, and make sure to replenish one random runey in any zone that goes into extinction.

Rock Runeys are trickier: I advise harvesting all of them until you have a decent supply of grass runeys beyond what you need for your factory. Pick a Rock-friendly zone (I like the Town Square). If possible, get it into prosperity by adding 35 of each type, and replenish the two lost grass everyday (while harvesting some of the other three types).

If you can't reach prosperity, dump as many grass as you can afford, an equal number of tree, as many rock as you can, and a handful of water runeys into the zone, and keep a very close eye on the runey balance. You'll probably need to trim the water supply, while replenishing the grass.

Alternatively, you could harvest all your runeys after the 8th of Winter, then take advantage of the 8-day rule come Spring. That should give you a running start for that month, with the only cost being that your crops in the dungeons will grow pretty slowly.

No, I think the beard comes as you get more hurt. Closer to death = older age. On Tyrant Mode, all your folks start with one health only, so your kingdom is made up of geriatrics (and Corobo is always the most adorable octogenarian ever).

You have until the end of November to pick your game. From that list, I liked Bubble Bobble best, but there's a WiiWare game that has the same thing, plus much more, for only a dollar more. So...River City Ransom is my vote.

Don't get too invested in that plotline, or waste your nights. Just keep talking to the folks, and eventually Lara will (anti-climatically) lay it out for you.

Ah dang. That storyline appears to have just gone away on its own once fall arrived. Oh well. :P

Easycure, I'm beginning to see that you must've been really trucking to get to the point you were by the end of the first year... I'm not even close to going on a date with anyone yet, let alone multiple people. And I foolishly somehow let Bianca and Tabatha leave after summer! I even had the little elephant and everything... (yes, I read a FAQ after that little critter sitting in my barn for months and doing nothing, haha).I even talked to them quite a bit, but apparently not enough...

The storyline all but dissapeared after the first week for me :P It sets you up as chasing Mist to this new town then...???...Then she talks of dreams, then all of a sudden **** just happens and you're like "oh... ok then..?" but the few hints you're given to unfold the events that further along the story are so vague that i'm surprised I even got it to happen as fast as i did.

It's funny, i didn't think i was "trucking" at first but i guess you're right. Now that i've completed the main storyline I feel like there's not much to do but level up until I'm strong enough to take on the games last two bosses. I actually went on a date with Mist yesterday and will be asking out my next girl soon after, just not sure who... I can ask out Melody or Iris right now (i think thats about it, maybe annette?). However, now that i'm done with the storyline and feel it wont be cheating to read FAQ's, it looks like there's only ONE date per season so asking out all the girls will take some time... but i still wanna do it ;)

Ask multiple girls out. Nothing bad could possibly happen...  ;)

I liked the talk about difficulty in games. I don't think it's disputable that games in general have gotten easier over time, especially in comparison to the brutal NES days. I much prefer the modern games, with their broader scales of difficulty. If I like a game enough to replay it, I usually start on the normal difficulty, and then give it another go on the hardest difficulty: this not only lets me have an excuse to replay a game, but I also get to have that feeling of challenge too.

I was a bit surprised by the sheer hostility that your guest had to the Super Guide. It seems unwarranted. Does he feel the same about games, like Bethesda's, that let you adjust the game's difficulty at any time? Does he hate Layton's clue system, or that of the Prime games? It seems to me that there's little difference between those accepted features and the Super Guide; the latter simply strips away the pretense.

I was disappointed though that no one brought up how the superior processing power of the HD systems in particular are rarely being utilized to beef up the AI. Or did I just miss that part? It's true that some games have better (not necessarily "harder") difficulty due to improvements in AI, but it saddens me that the leap in, say FPS AI since Goldeneye has been a mere hop compared to the Olympic-class triple-jump made in graphics. I wish more developers took a cue from Civilization IV, and focused on making the game more fun by making a better AI system.

I'm really really looking forward to Greg 'n Lindy Action Hour next week.

On the agenda...

- JaMarcus Russell: Does his talent match his girth?

Stay tuned!

That may be physically impossible.

Anyhow, great show as always, and keep up the good work!

So there are differences other than just the difficulty in Tyrant mode? Probably not many, but... still, interesting...
[/quote]

That was pretty much the only one, actually. Oh, the ending is "extended" via a single extra picture at the end, but that's all I noticed.

Sweet choice. I enjoyed this game, but never had a chance to finish it. I really doubt I will this time either, but I'll give it my best.

I have to second NWR DrewMG about the clunkiness of the menu though.

I'm also surprised that there is no thread or mention of Castlevania Rebirth (according to NWR search), should I start a thread for that too?

Go for it! I've always preferred the Metroidvanias, but the old-school ones are fun in their own way too. The game needs more lovin'!

I, too, picked Ferne, but for a completely different reason.  I <3 Ferne.   :-*

Hey, don't get me wrong, her picture went up in my bedroom, and all over the castle...

I'm only halfway through so far, but I gotta say I enjoyed the Little King love. It made me so happy...although I'm not sure what James is referring to about frustrating bosses later in the game. The only one that troubled me was the pinball fight, although the geography one can be tedious if you don't come in with the right team.

If I'd known my special rocket ship girl (I chose Verde :( )would get fricking eaten by a giant rat, I would've brought someone I didn't like very much.
Yeah, that did seem a bit odd. I wonder what would happen if you chose the fat princess? Too big to eat maybe? Probably not. Also, I didn't know you could choose Verde, I thought you had to pick a princess...?

actually makes the direction make sense, considering the fact that everything took place inside the little puppet theater, born of the kid's imagination/daydreams/musings/memories.
Yeah, towards the end I actually kind of wondered if that were going to be the case. Especially with Noname mentioning that the ending offered a sort of explanation. Did you read the notebook in the kid's room? It seems to suggest that the people who populated the world were based off people he had met. For example, he said he had a uncle who drinks too much which is clearly King Duvroc. And he had a neighbor who thought he was the greatest because he was so tall, who was probably King Long Sauvage. But what is kind of sad, if true, is that he mentioned that his grandfather had died last year and became a knight up in heaven; this was most likely Howser the Bull Knight.

At least, that was my understanding of that.

if it was a dream like it seemed, how could Kid Corobo have seen King Corobo when he woke up? Are they saying that his intense imagination actually made his daydreams real??? Or maybe he's just schizo?
That's the part I didn't understand. I honestly can't figure out what that was supposed to represent. But, then I wonder, who was this "God" that was referred to throughout the game? This "God" left memos on how to beat each king, so was "God" actually the little kid? He himself was his own god? WHAT? I DON'T KNOW!

...Did I just break the forum rules?

Good questions all around, and they're all the ones I wondered when I went through it. In Tyrant Mode, Pancho makes it pretty clear that Kid Corobo is, in fact, "God" in this world, but how King Corobo came to be is never explained. I did like the little snippets that showed where all the major characters came from.

And I'm glad I begrudgingly took Verde with me, as she kind of got on my nerves. Once I knew what was coming though, I picked Ferne. I could think of no more appropriate a fate for that gold-digger...

Spoiler-tagging is fun!

AUGH I haven't touched this game.  I miss my girls.

I know how you feel. I can't wait for the second summer to come by so i can check out the girls in their new bathing suits i've hand made for them. If i can somehow make it to craft level 99 from wherever i am now (50 something?) before summer i'll be able to check out the ladies in the AMAZING (TWO PEICE) SWIMSUITS!

I may or may not have some bad news for you on that front...>_>

Ok, so I was playing the other day, and it's summer, and all the girls in town were talking about seeing a ghost in town. I stayed up late and wandered till I passed out from fatigue, but never found anything.

Anyone have any idea what's up with that? Also, Lara will never, ever love me because I die all the time. :P

Don't get too invested in that plotline, or waste your nights. Just keep talking to the folks, and eventually Lara will (anti-climatically) lay it out for you.

Man, I'm just peeing in everybody's Wheaties today, ain't I?

So, Apparently the new third chapter of the game is Leon and Krauser in South America circa 2002 Adds context to a certain RE4 Knife Fight I guess.

Neat! It's nice to finally know how the latter is supposed to fit into the series, since he just kind of appeared.

I agree that there were plenty of other routes they could have taken (and from a sales perspective, ones they SHOULD have taken). That said, I'm still glad they went the way they did; the cartoony look, meshed with great gameplay and somewhat mature themes is a combination that really attracts me.

And don't let me oversell you on the "explanation" part. I stand by what I said, but I do have to emphasize the "something" part of my statement: they never outright say "and this is why we went with this artstyle." But I made a connection pretty quickly, and I think it fits. Whether that connection was intended (or would occur to most) I can't really say, since almost no one's played this game, but...well. beat the game, and you might see what I mean. I'll be happy to compare notes then! :-)

I was surprised to hear so much dislike for Overkill. I suppose I shouldn't be, since all the complaints listed ARE legitimate, but I found myself enjoying it a lot nonetheless. It's also really popular when one or two people swing by. But then, I'm a mild fan of the genre (warts and all), so to each his own.

Bit bummed to hear about the vacation. Not that you guys don't deserve it, but y'all tend to make my Mondays a bit cheerier for two hours. Ah well, I guess there's always the ton of episodes I missed the first time around.

I've heard nothing but great things about M&L3, and how it's a return to the form of Superstar Saga. With that in mind, my vote goes to Mario & Luigi.

"It doesn't hold up compared to the boss battles.  The normal enemies only pose an actual threat to you if you aren't paying attention or if they're all ganging up on you at once such as when you're fighting off 100 of them in sequence.  An example of this is when you're fighting Ninjas that are spread out over a map, who like to throw bombs out as well as Shuriken and occasionally chains.  If you don't remember to hit low to hit the bombs as well, you can easily kill the enemy and then get hit by the bomb explosion.  Otherwise, you're mashing the A button to utter victory without even really trying"

Amazingly, this sounds like a shoot'em-up rather than a platformer.  Waves of enemies that fall easily but set you up for small mistakes, while serving as sources for level score/point generation.  Not sure that I'm drawn to this mix.  I'm also not a fan of Capcom VS.-style hyper-animations.

To be honest, I'm not sure I can recommend this game as a $50 purchase.  It's truly a gorgeous game and I have a lot of fun playing it, but the gameplay is extremely shallow and the story's pretty poorly told (which is wierd for how much emphasis the plot gets).  It's a great rental, but I don't think this mix of gameplay is worth a purchase till it drops another $10-$20.

That's pretty much was I was afraid of. Thanks: I'll just add it to the list of "wait 'til it hits $20." Too bad too, because I really like Marvelous and would have liked to "support" them by buying their game, futile as the gesture would be.

Dang! I wish I'd checked the forums on Friday for that Goldbox deal... picked it up from TRU for full-price instead. Super-excited to play it, though I've promised myself not to try it out until I get some much-needed cleaning done in my apartment...

One thing I don't quite understand—and keep in mind this is without playing it yet... but why'd they market it with such a Fisher-Price visual style? Both the title and box art would turn me off if I were just seeing this randomly in a store and not knowing that the gameplay was apparently such fun. Even still, I felt a little stupid asking about about availability of a game called "Little King's Story" on the phone. Though this might also be because Little King is a Subway-type sandwich chain in my area, lol. As it is, there seems to be a disparity between the complex gameplay and the presentation.

Meh, just wondering about that.

It was a bit of a mistake, yes (although personally it's also what first attracted me to the title), but I can tell you that in the end you get *something* of an explanation for why the whole world is presented in such a child-like manner.

Of course, that same would-be explanation just makes other aspects of the game that much more disturbing...
