Bethesda whips out their Wii... aims at the Mature
« on: May 18, 2009, 04:00:34 PM »
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/bethesda-next-to-target-mature-wii-market
Quote from: GamesIndustry.biz
Fallout and Oblivion publisher Bethesda has told GamesIndustry.biz that it plans to target the market for mature games on Nintendo's Wii, with at least one big release to be announced later this year.

"We are going to make an announcement on a really big Wii game this year, we've got a couple of other things in the pipeline, and it's a format we're really looking at with the right approach,"
revealed Sean Brennan, managing director for Bethesda in Europe, in an exclusive interview published today.

"I've got consoles at home but I wouldn't sit and play an 18-rated game with my family on the Wii," he said. "Is there space in the Wii market for that? I think there is, but again, it's all about finding out how big that is. Is it 5 per cent? If it's five per cent of the market and you can own that space it's worth doing because you can achieve volume. If you can't own it at five per cent, it's not worth doing, quite frankly," he added.

Brennan said that the company isn't going to announce a dedicated label for the Wii as some of its rivals have, and it isn't about to churn out sugar-sweet titles for the tween market.

"We're not going to establish a new range and call it 'My Girly Game Range' or whatever these other companies are doing, it's so me-too and boring.

"Looking at the opportunities in the Nintendo space is interesting for us because it's more driven by getting the right product for the demographic and also the right quality. We're not going to do a hamster simulator, it's not us. We're not going to produce games for girls or pet-sim products. There's nothing to distinguish them from one another," he said.

Bethesda also sees the opportunity with a console that is leaving its home rivals behind. Only a handful of publishers are really making a success in the Wii's casual market, and Brennan believes that the idea of establishing a mature business on the machine isn't just the latest bandwagon.

"We have huge respect for the Nintendo platforms, and from a marketing perspective globally they've been phenomenal. It would be churlish to ignore that space," he admitted.

"It was a problem with the DS space as well, because as soon as you spot the bandwagon, it's already too late. People don't get that. There are still some people jumping on the bandwagon but it's not within our business philosophy."

Speculations anyone?
Anyone thinking its Fallout related? Like Fallout 3 Tactics or something like that?
& I'm glad they don't want to jump on an already established bandwagon, but SEGA is the one that is trying to start it, where was Bethesda 1+ year ago?

What could they have besides a Fallout spinoff or an M+ enabled Elder Scrolls?

Geez, I hope not but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.  Rail Shooters are really getting overexposed on the Wii.

They're going to expand an existing franchise. Elder Scrolls with Motion+ support.

I don't think it will have to do with Fallout because all of the activity with the DLC.

But they don't want to jump on any established bandwagon, so maybe it will be a 3rd person Fallout RTS Tactics RPG where the DLC will secretly be patches for an incomplete game that got released anyway.

"existing franchise" probably translates to Morrowind Xbox getting ported and on-rail'd.

If there's any hope for anything remotely original compared to what they've already released this gen, then it could be their Richard Marcinko/Navy SEALs game was moved to Wii.

Was that the PSP game they were working on?

edit: nevermind. that was an Oblivion dungeon crawler or something like that.

Has anybody played Star Trek: Conquest? That was the last Wii game from Bethesda and I am curious as to whether that is as good as they can do if if that was basically a throwaway game they made just to cash in on the Wii.

Let's see:

- Third party wanting money? Check.
- Franchise known for crappy games? Check.

You were right on the money, TJ.

If we get a Fallout spinoff then their support don't mean squat.  It'll just be the same thing every other third party is doing where the market-leading Wii is the afterthought while the projects the devs REALLY want to make are on the other consoles.  They're saying some encouraging stuff but we've been burned before.  Until someone actually treats the Wii as their TARGET PLATFORM I refuse to get my hopes up for ANY Wii third party support.

This would be cool IF it results in something but right now I can't assume it will. :(

So recently today I found my way into Namco Bandai's press/media storage, and took a look at their E3 folder.

NOTHING IN IT.

3rd parties are so horrible at their jobs.  Wii's got nothing this year.  Best E3 ever.

NWR gave it an 8 but I hated it, it felt way too simplistic.

Aw darn, Star Trek: Conquest game owned my soul for quite a while.

Actually... it would be some sort of awesome if they gave MorrowWind the Killer 7 treatment...

I think I may have been expecting too much from it, I wanted it to be more like Birth of the Federation which was a full-blown 4X game. Then again its MetaCritic score is 49...

I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of the SNES Starfleet Academy game on the Wii. Bethesda owns the rights necessary to make this happen, right?

Oh yeah, and the TNG game on SNES wasn't too bad either. I'm surprised there isn't something going on to capitalize on the new movie out now...

If they're going to make another Trek game for the Wii I think another Elite Force would be a perfect fit.
