General Gaming / Re: Let's talk about 3D Sonic here

I liked SA2, more than SA1 in fact.  The Sonic/Shadow levels in SA2 were especially good, and I even kind of liked the mech levels.  Only the treasure hunting levels got on my nerves.  Pumpkin Hill, ya'll.

I liked SA1, but there were times when the level goals didn't seem all that clear.  Near the end, beyond even those noxious Big the Cat levels, I got stuck on the airship with Amy Rose and could never figure out what I was supposed to be doing.  Never played Shadow's game, but just thinking about it kind of makes me feel embarrassed.  It's the video game equivalent of Disco Mickey.

Pah, he can still enjoy Spore!  I don't believe in Oddish but I still enjoy his work.

How can anyone dislike GARRUS!?  He had the most personality out of anyone on the ship!  =(

It takes Diff'rent Strokes to rule the world, yes it does!

Personally, I didn't like that I couldn't make him mad.  He seemed very eager to agree with everything I said, which is fine, if they were trying to make him look sycophantic on purpose.  I might not have picked the right conversation choices to make his personality blossom, though, so it might be my fault.  At any rate, there were times when he was admittedly very interesting, especially during certain sidequests.

It never ceases to amaze me how everyone in the world is better at Guitar Hero than I am.

After playing it for hours, I can safely say that Boom Blox is one of the most genuinely interactive video games I've ever played.  Part bowling, part Jenga, part jumping into a pile of freshly-raked leaves, it's nothing if not unique.  The only real problem with the game is presentation.  The forgettable graphics and characters diminish what could very well be the best game of its kind since Tetris.  What's cool about Boom Blox is that it really does seem to entice people of all ages.  Both my kid cousin and my grandma couldn't help but give it a try.

I wish someone would basically make a game that served as a love note to the Pacific Northwest. *sigh*

It's odd there really haven't been too many games about Indians.  The best example I can think of is that old NES game Whomp 'Em.  When I was a kid playing Oregon Trail, I thought it'd be cool if they made a similar game about the Trail of Tears.

I'm curious as to whether the game will focus on the mythologies of a particular region of North America, or sort of bake them all into a casserole.  Either way is fine with me.

If someone can make a baseball game in which fielding isn't such a drag, I might consider buying it.

Can you at least save your cutscene-viewing progress so you don't have to endure the whole thing in one sitting?

As I've stated before, Ogre Battle would be fabulous.  I wish SOMEONE would offer the original Darkstalkers or that old PSOne game One Piece Mansion...not that I have a PS3 with which to download One Piece Mansion in the first place.  Bleh.

Baroque sounds like garbage and I haven't seen a release date for it either.

Baroque is great, but you should probably stay away from it.  It's not for most people.  Roguelikes are niche enough, but Baroque takes the concept and manages to make it even MORE quirky.

David Lo Pan's neon-laced skull backdrops are fearsome indeed.  But Palpatine shoots lightning at digital Muppets from behind the safety of office furniture.  Battle tactics!

I'm currently playing through Baroque and Boom Blox for the Wii, and Universe at War for the Xbox.  I plan on picking up one of the newest Mystery Dungeon Pokemon games for the DS, too.

I would spring for any version that lets you play as Palpatine, regardless of graphical inferiority.  He's the only reason I own the prequels on DVD.

Donkey Konga 2 made me sad.  I adored the first game, but the sequel had the unmitigated gall to violate my senses with the worst song list I've ever experienced in a video game.

Is Boom Blox hard to find, or is it just me?  I've scoured three Gamestops, and it has yet to turn up.  Think I'd have more luck at Wal-Mart?

I downloaded The Adventures of Lolo a few days ago, but I've only played it once since then.  I spent an hour or two playing it the first night, but I oops-edly just turned off the console without saving first, so now I'm spurning Lolo and his cute catepillar enemies, too.

I'm sort of out of the loop; is there any mention of Ogre Battle or Ogre Battle 64 being brought to the VC?  I'll light up the world with the clicking of my heels if VC brings me Ogre Battle.

TalkBack / Re: Wii RPG Baroque Crawls Into Stores
« on: June 02, 2008, 04:22:25 PM »
I am digging Baroque.  A lot.  To be fair, it's really difficult to grade it, though.  It succeeds splendidly at what it sets out to do, but the more it succeeds, the more people it's going to alienate with its oddball gameplay.  I can only think of two legitimate flaws: 1) It's sometimes difficult to tell if you're making progress, and 2) sometimes you'll either accidentally use an item or have it stolen from you, and it'll ruin your entire dungeon run.  Essentially, Baroque is all about grinding through the same (randomly generated) dungeon over and over, but ironically grinding doesn't really do you any good, because you're forced to start all over from square one numerous times, no matter how well you do.  And yet somehow, it works, partially because it's just so darn interesting, and you want to see what new dialogue and intereractions the dungeon is going to throw at you next time.  If you enjoyed the movie Jacob's Ladder, you'll likewise enjoy Baroque's complicated storyline.

The people of the world should join hands and let Game Freak know that we does not like Giratina's new form.   Milotic in a Jirachi hat!

And to be frank, I'm kind of bored of Star Wars altogether.  From a creative standpoint, it feels like the Star Wars universe has been mined for every gold nugget it can cough up.  And even a few not-so-gold nuggets.

No offense to any Star Wars fans out there.  But you know things are out of hand when the hum of a lightsaber on television is more common and banal than the sound of your neighbors revving up a leaf blower.

The first couple of hours of Gladius aren't as good as the rest of the game, because you don't have access to some of the more enjoyable classes or character abilities.  The graphics are ugly by any standard, but there are a lot of classes, skills, and customization options that make up for it.  Eventually, it becomes an addicting mesh of Fire Emblem and Super Mario RPG.

It's a funny thing you brought up a points-based character creation system for Fire Emblem, because I was talking about that very thing with a friend of mine a couple of days ago.  Thing is, it'd be a fairly simple game to make by modern standards, and it'd probably attract a larger than usual audience for a Fire Emblem game.

One of my favorite games of the previous generation was Gladius.  Did you ever try it?

I used to have one mic, but I gave it to my sister some years ago (along with the original copy of Hey You Pikachu).  All I have now is that extra garage sale copy.  Sorry. :(

I used to collect Gengar merchandise.  The little fastfood Gengar with light-up eyes roosts on my computer.  It acts as a gargoyle, protecting me from evil spirits, household demons, and any sort of organism that might be frightened by a grown man that owns a Gengar toy.

Also, I have two copies of Hey You Pikachu (I got the extra in a box of Atari 2600 games I bought at a garage sale).  I don't have a microphone for it, but anyone that's a Pokemon collector could have it if they wanted it.
